Il Trofeo Desafio Espanol è di Alinghi

[singlepic=722,250,170,,left]Trofeo Desafio Espanol – Valencia – Il sailing team di Alinghi bordo di SUI-100, la barca che ha conquistato l’America’s Cup nel 2007, ha vinto con cinque successi parziali su sei prove disputate, il Trofeo Desafío Español, regata annuale del Club Náutico Español de Vela.
Questi tre giorni di regata hanno rappresentato il ritorno alle competizioni per le imbarcazioni di America’s Cup V5.0, dopo una lunga pausa e ha offerto a tutti i team la tanto desiderata opportunità di regatare nuovamente con gli America’s Cup Class.
Quattro di queste imbarcazioni hanno regatato nell’ambito del Trofeo Desafío Español, che vedeva schierati su un altro campo anche ottanta imbarcazioni da regata-crociera. Le regate si sono svolte a largo della spiaggia di Malvarossa in condizioni di vento leggero e sole, lo stesso campo di regata che, appena un anno fa, era stato teatro di una delle “battaglie navali” più combattute della storia dell’America’s Cup tra Team New Zealand e Alinghi. Il team svizzero ha poi vinto il trofeo per la seconda volta consecutiva.
Questo fine settimana la posta in gioco non era la stessa ma l’impegno e l’agonismo dei diversi campioni presenti non ha deluso le aspettative: tra loro c’erano Peter Holmberg, ex timoniere di Alinghi, ora alla ruota di Luna Rossa, la medaglia d’oro olimpica Ben Ainslie su Team Origin e Paul Cayard su Desafío Español. Dopo qualche errore con i gennaker nella prima regata venerdì scorso ma l’equipaggio di Alinghi ha ingranato la giusta marcia e Murray Jones che sostituiva per l’occasione il timoniere titolare Ed Baird, ha portato al successo il team elvetico.
Brad Butterworth, skipper del team e tattico a bordo di SUI-100, sottolinea la prestazione di Murray Jones: Il livello delle regate era molto alto e Murray ha fatto davvero un gran bel lavoro. Abbiamo vinto cinque delle sei regate e lo abbiamo fatto in maniera convincente. SUI-100 è ovviamente una barca molto veloce, ed è stato bello tornare in acqua e regatare di nuovo.”
Murray Jones ha così commento la sua prima regata di America’s Cup da timoniere: “È stato divertente ritornare a regatare con queste barche e insieme a tutti i ragazzi del team per la regata annuale del CNEV. Abbiamo regatato bene ed è stato un bel lavoro di squadra, nel corso del quale tutto l’equipaggio mi ha aiutato molto in ogni momento e questo mi ha reso tutto più semplice. Non dimentichiamo che queste per me erano le prime regate al timone di un’imbarcazione di America’s Cup”.
Il trofeo Desafío Español è stato l’ultimo evento della stagione 2008 per Alinghi. Butterworth ripercorre la stagione appena conclusa commentando con piacere i risultati ottenuti: “Credo che più di così davvero non avremmo potuto fare. Ed Baird vincendo la iShares regatta insieme a Lorenzo Mazza, Rodney Ardern, Pieter van Nieuwenhuijzen e Peter Evans, ha raggiunto un risultato di assoluto valore internazionale, vincendo al primo tentativo l’evento. Murray Jones, Yves Detrey, Nils Frei e Ernesto Bertarelli, hanno vinto a loro volta sul lago di Ginevra con il Decision 35, che è una classe molto competitiva. A parte questo, abbiamo vinto nei monoscafi con Numbers e con altre imbarcazioni ancora, così alla fine possiamo sicuramente affermare di aver avuto un anno eccezionale sull’acqua, nonostante le circostanze attuali non siano le migliori. L’anno prossimo stiamo pensando di regatare anche in altre classi e speriamo di avere la possibilità di lavorare sulla nuova classe di barche dell’America’s Cup, sia in termini di costruzione che di prove in mare”.
Infine c’è da segnalare che i dodici challenger iscritti alla 33a America’s Cup e il defender si incontreranno ancora la prossima settimana per continuare a parlare della nuova classe di barche del futuro della 33° edizione dell’America’s Cup.

ALINGHI WINS AC CLASS OF TROFEO DESAFIO ESPANOL
[singlepic=721,250,170,,left][Alinghi Press Release] The Alinghi sailing team raced SUI-100, the 32nd America’s Cup winning boat, to five wins out of six this weekend in Valencia, winning the AC class trophy of the Trofeo Desafío Español, Club Náutico Español de Vela’s annual regatta.
This three-day regatta heralds a return to racing for the AC Version 5.0s after a long sojourn ashore and has given the teams some much desired America’s Cup Class racing.
Four America’s Cup Class yachts raced alongside the 80-strong fleet of cruiser-racers fighting for the Trofeo Desafío Español in the light autumn conditions off Malvarossa beach that last year saw one of the greatest battles in America’s Cup history between Team New Zealand and Alinghi who won the trophy for a second time. This weekend there was less at stake, but it was no less ferocious, with ex-Alinghi helmsman Peter Holmberg at the helm of Luna Rossa, Olympic Gold medallist Ben Ainslie steering Team Origin and Paul Cayard at the helm of Desafío Español. After a few glitches and torn spinnakers on Friday, the Alinghi crew settled in and Murray Jones, standing in for helmsman Ed Baird, steered consistently to win the event.
Brad Butterworth, team skipper and tactician onboard praised Murray’s performance: “The competition has been very good and Murray Jones has done a great job, we have won five of the six races and have had a good time doing it. SUI-100 is a very fast boat and it has been good fun to get back on the water and racing.”
Murray Jones says of his first AC regatta as helmsman: “It was fun to be out there racing, to get the boat out with the boys in the CNEV annual regatta. We sailed well and it was a matter of team work as it was my first go on the helm and it was the guys around me that helped me out the whole way around each race, they made it easy.”
This is the last event of the 2008 sailing season and Brad looks back at a busy and successful summer: “I think we have overachieved! Ed Baird did a great job with the iShares regatta with Lorenzo Mazza, Rodney Ardern, Pieter van Nieuwenhuijzen and Peter Evans; they did well to clean up on their first attempt. And Murray Jones, Yves Detrey, Nils Frei and Ernesto Bertarelli, also did a very good job winning on the Decision 35s on Lake Geneva, which is a hot class,” he said. “Aside from that we have had monohull successes with Numbers and other boats and so all in all, we have had a great year on the water, despite the situation. Next year we look forward to possibly branching out into other classes and hopefully working on getting this new class of America’s Cup boat built and in the water.”
And to this end, the twelve entered challengers and the defender meet again this coming week in Geneva to continue discussing the design of the new class and the 33rd America’s Cup.
