Split – The SSL Ranking 2016 deadline is getting closer, September 12th will be the day to officially call the 12 top skippers who will be invited to sail at the SSL Finals 2016 in Nassau, Bahamas, from November 28th to December 4th.
The top 10 skippers have been already largely confirmed, for the remaining 2 spots there are a few sailors fighting, and the last big opportunity to gain useful points starts today in Split: the ISCYRA Eastern Hemisphere Championship 2016 (EHC) will give 750 SSL points to the winner.
There are almost 40 boats competing in Croatia for the event organized by the JK Mornar Yacht Club, home of the first Olympic medal in sailing for the country: Tonci Stipanovic, who won Silver medal in Rio in the Laser class.
Stipanovic will join the fleet in Split on his own Starboat competing against some fellow local Laser sailors at their first real Star regatta. He’s already proven to be a talented Star skipper in Nassau at the SSL Finals 2015, finishing the event in 6th place in front of more experienced Star sailors such as Paul Cayard (USA), Mateusz Kusznierewicz (POL) and Diego Negri (ITA). On the Croatian water he will find on his way to the podium current Star Worlds champion Augie Diaz (USA) and Eastern Hemisphere Championship holder Hubert Merkelbach (GER) among other great Star sailors.
The EHC will end on Sunday but there are still a couple of options to earn some points for the SSL Ranking top 12: Finnish National and District 6 in Canada, 250 points each.
