Hobart – The maxi yacht Black Jack, owned by Peter Harburg and skippered by Mark Bradford, was first to finish the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race covering the 628-nautical mile course in a time of two days, 12 hours, 37 minutes & 17 seconds. LawConnect was second over the line, two hours, 36 minutes behind her rival, with SHK Scallywag in third. Black Jack’s time was some way outside the race record of one day, nine hours, 15 minutes and 24 seconds set in 2017.
Meanwhile, the main body of a much-reduced fleet is now confronting a period of light and variable winds, following an often violent and punishing initial segment of the race. Some 36 out of 88 yachts retired in the first 48 hours due to the heavy weather. With lighter conditions set to characterize the remainder of the course, the 76th Rolex Sydney Hobart looks to be one of the most difficult in recent years and it will be a real achievement just to finish.
