Rolex Middle Sea Race, DSK Pioneer Investments: diario di bordo

[singlepic id=4367 w=300 h=204 float=left]Rolex Middle Sea Race – Stretto di Messina – Riceviamo e pubblichiamo volentieri il diario di bordo redatto dall’amico e collega Giuliano Luzzatto, direttore di Mainsail, impegnato a bordo di DSK Pioneer Investments, lo Swan 90 di Danilo Salsi.

Report nr. 3 – Day 2, 01.00
Siamo nello Stretto di Messina. Dopo qualche scroscio di pioggia e alcuni salti di vento, peraltro in diminuzione, stiamo attraversando velocemente l’allineamento tra Scilla e Cariddi. Al momento stiamo navigando con il vento al traverso e, almeno per ora, non abbiamo bisogno dell’aiuto della corrente per uscire dallo Stretto.

Report nr. 2 – Day 2, 00.39
Scesa la notte, il tempo è cambiato rapidamente. Un buco di vento vicino alla costa siciliana ha suggerito al tattico Andrea Casale di strambare. DSK Pioneer Investments si è spostata dalla rotta diretta, ma ha trovato più aria. Ora, dopo aver strambato nuovamente, con Danilo Salsi al timone, stiamo navigando a circa 16 nodi e siamo al traverso di Siracusa. Il vento si è attestato sui 20 nodi e ogni tanto piove. Strambare nella notte buia regala sensazioni adrenaliniche. A bordo il primo obiettivo non è la velocità, ma la sicurezza: il giubotto salvagente è obbligatorio per chi sta in coperta. Sotto, invece, chi è fuori turno può gustare degli ottimi spaghetti preparati da Tatiana. Al tavolo di carteggio Francesco Mongelli, Andrea Casale e il timoniere Alberto Bolzan stanno studiando la strategia da seguire per oltrepassare lo Stretto di Messina.

Report nr. 1 – Day 1, 17.16
Danilo Salsi ha fatto davvero un ottimo lavoro in fase di partenza e ha portato il suo Swan 90, DSK Pioneer Investments, puntuale sulla linea. Il Grand Harbour è un posto davvero affascinante, con migliaia di persone ammassate per seguire le fasi del via e i Maxi come noi, Luna Rossa e ICAP Leopard che filano veloci verso l’uscita del porto. Le previsioni del tempo parlano di vento leggero e dopo qualche ora di navigazione avvistiamo la Sicilia, mentre a poppa ancora si vede Malta. Il vento è aumentato e Danilo Salsi, prima di lasciare il timone ad Alberto Bolzan per concedersi un pò di riposo, ha esclamato: “Un grande giorno di vela!”.

Report nr. 3 – Day 2, 01.00
We are inside the Messina strait. After some shower and wind shifting and  decreasing, now we we are crossing quickly Scilla e Cariddi as in the Omero’s Odissey was called the strait between Sicily and Calabria. At the moment we are sailing with the wind at the beam and we don’t need the little help from the tides that can push us out of the Strait in case of lack of wind.

Report nr. 2 – Day 2, 00.39
Arriving the night, the weather is rapidly changing. First, less intesity of wind close Sicily coast suggested to tactitian Andrea Casale to jibe. DSK Pioneer Investement headed a little bit out of direct course but with a better intesity of wind. Now the owner helmsman Danilo Salsi is steering the yacht up to 16 kn speed at the beam of the city of Siracusa and the wind incresed to 20kn and more with some shower. We jibed one more time and now we are goin on the right course. It’s a very adrenalinic manouvre to jibe the huge gennaker and the very powerful mainsail in the completly black night! But ob board the first goal is not the speed, it’s the security: for everybody on the deck is mandatory the safety belt jacket. But down below people  “off watch” had the opportunity to eat spaghetti perfectly cooked by Tatiana. At the navigator seat Francesco Mongelli, Andrea Casale and the 2nd helmsman Alberto Bolzan are studing the strategy for the best approach to the Messina Strait and his tides.

Report nr. 1 – Day 1, 17.16
Danilo Salsi made a really good job helming his Swan 90 DSK Pioneeer Investements at the starting line positioned inside the Malta Grand Harbour; a very impressive place with thousand of people looking from the antique points of view of Senglea and Vittoriosa cities and a very impressive fleet including the 100′ Leopard and the smallest STP65 Luna Rossa, skippered by the recent winner of the VOR, Torben Grael. According with the weather forecast we sailed comfortably in 8-10 knt of wind and a sunny afternoon with a clear sky.  Sicily appeared in front of us  as the Maltese Archipelago was still visible in our back. “Great day of sailing!”Danilo says before leave the helm to Alberto Bolzan and going down below to have some rest before the night. Now the wind is incresed to 16-18 knt and rotate pushing the yacht at more than 13 knt speed. Sicily is on our beam, and all the crew is really happy to be here!
