Genova – The Italian Sailing Federation today announced the first names of the athletes identified to represent Italy at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The FIV choices will now be submitted to the Italian National Olympic Committee for final approval.
Michele Marchesini: “the mosaic of the Olympic Team for Paris 2024 is starting to take shape, important steps towards the goal and for the careers of these three athletes. I want to congratulate them for the commitment, continuity and growth with which they have managed to earn the Blue Jersey with the five circles and enter the elite of world sport.”
For the ILCA 6 class, the FIV has identified Chiara Benini Floriani, an athlete from Riva del Garda registered for the Fiamme Gialle. In recent years you have won silver at the Mediterranean Games in 2022, seventh at the Overall European Championship, fourth at the Princesa Sofia Trophy and bronze at the Marseille Olympic Test Event in 2023.
Chiara Benini Floriani: “Participating in the Olympics has been my dream since I was a child and having this possibility at 22 years old makes me very proud. To date, however, the objective of participating has transformed into that of competing for positions at the top of the rankings. I would like to thank first of all my family, my boyfriend and my friends who have been close to me even in moments when things were not going right, the Italian Sailing Federation and my coach who give me this great opportunity, the Fiamme Gialle who have supported me for more than two years, the coaches, trainers and all the professionals who have worked with me, helping me become the athlete I am today. A final thank you goes to Fraglia Vela Riva and all the sponsors without whom all this would not have been possible.”
In the 49er:FX Class, the Italian crew indicated will be composed of Triestina Jana Germani and Giorgia Bertuzzi from Gardesine from Malcesine, both Navy athletes. In recent years they have distinguished themselves by obtaining the podium at the Princesa Sofía Trophy and the Bronze at the European Championship in 2022, as well as the silver at the Semaine Olympique Française in Hyeres and the European Championship in 2023.
Jana Germani: “Participating in the Olympics has always been my dream since I was a child on the Optimist. To think that after so many years the dream becomes reality is indescribable; they seemed so far away but here we are!. Now, as always, maximum dedication to make every single training session, sacrifice and commitment count. I would like to thank my parents for allowing me to get this far by believing in me. Thanks to the Italian Sailing Federation, the Navy and all those who made this achievement possible.”
Giorgia Bertuzzi: “They have been four long years full of emotions and defeats, but we can finally communicate our joy for this milestone. When I was little and asked what my dream was, I answered: taking part in the Olympic Games! Now I’ve grown up and my goal is no longer to participate but to return from Paris with a medal. There are still just under 200 days left until Marseille and these will be the toughest training sessions where we will have to give our all to reach the goal. I owe a big thank you to my family and in particular to my dad who taught me from an early age that my every limit represents a starting point for achieving victory. A huge thank you to the Federation, in particular to Michele Marchesini and to the Navy which is allowing us to make our dreams come true. Last but not least, thanks go to Gianfranco Sibello who personally trained me as an athlete but also as a person: he always encouraged me to give more and more every day and in every single training session and this has borne fruit.”
