Volvo Ocean Race, anche Rothmans alla Legends Regatta

Volvo Ocean Race – Alicante – Ci sarà anche Rothmans, la barca inglese che partecipò con lo skipper Lawrie Smith alla The Whitbread Round the World Race nel1989-90 (antesignana della Volvo Ocean Race) alla Volvo Ocean Race Legends regatta and reunion. Con i suoi 80 piedi, la barca è tre piedi più lunga di Great Britain II, che è stata la prima ad iscriversi allo storico evento seguita da Copernicus, il 45’ che è stato lo scafo di minori dimensioni a concludere l’edizione inaugurale nel 1973-74.

Rothmans, che in origine aveva un equipaggio composto di sedici persone, si piazzò al quarto posto overall, impiegando centotrentuno giorni per percorrere le 33.000 miglia del percorso. Per Lawrie Smith si trattava della seconda partecipazione dopo quella del 1985-86 a bordo di Drum della popstar Simon Le Bon.

Dalla conclusione del giro del mondo Rothmans è stata tenuta in perfette condizioni dal suo attuale armatore svedese Bob Erixon che, in compagnia di un equipaggio di amici, ha anche vinto la Round Gotland Race nel 2003 e ha ottenuto una serie di ottimi risultati sulla scena velica scandinava.

Erixon, infatti, ha creato un sindacato composto da sedici amici con lo scopo di armare e essere co-proprietari della barca che ancora corre con il nome di Rothmans. “L’obiettivo era di traversare l’Atlantico e di partecipare a regate come la Cowes Week e l’ARC – racconta – Pensiamo che la Volvo Ocean Race Legends Regatta sia un’iniziativa fantastica e tutti gli armatori sono entusiasti dell’idea di partecipare”.

“Siamo un gruppo che va dai 44 a 60 anni e tutti abbiamo seguito la Whitbread e la Volvo Ocean Race nel corso degli ultimi decenni. Abbiamo molta voglia di confrontarci anche con altre barche più anziane e più giovani e abbiamo già avuto modo di competere con Charles Jourdan (WRTRW 1989-90). La Volvo Ocean Race Legends regatta, poi, rientra perfettamente nel nostro programma agonistico 2011-2012” ha aggiunto Erixon.

La barca è stata mantenuta in eccellenti condizioni, rispettando il progetto. A parte alcune attrezzature elettroniche, infatti, la configurazione da regata è quella originale e certamente sarà preparata per essere il più possibile competitiva per il prossimo novembre ad Alicante.

[Volvo Ocean Race Legends Regatta] Rothmans, skippered by Britain’s Lawrie Smith in The Whitbread Round the World Race 1989-90 (the forerunner of the Volvo Ocean Race), will sail from Sweden to take part in the Volvo Ocean Race Legends regatta and reunion. At 80’, she is three feet longer than Great Britain II, who is also entered, along with the smallest yacht ever, 45’ Copernicus from Poland, both of whom took part in 1973-74.

Rothmans originally sailed with a crew of up to 16 and finished the race in fourth place overall, taking 131 days to complete the 33,000 nautical mile course.  It was Lawrie Smith’s second race, having completed part of the course on Simon Le Bon’s Drum in 1985-86.

Since finishing The Whitbread, Rothmans has been kept in pristine condition by present owner Bob Erixon and his friends in Scandinavia, who successfully campaigned her in 2003 winning the Round Gotland race and finishing up the order in other Scandinavian regattas.

Erixon formed a syndicate among 16 of his friends to co-own the boat and she still sails under the name of Rothmans.  “The target was to sail the Atlantic and to compete in races like Cowes Week and the ARC,” he explains.  “We think the Volvo Ocean Race Legends regatta and reunion is a fabulous idea and all the owners are very enthusiastic about it,” he confirmed.

“We are all between 44 – 60 years old and we have watched The Whitbread and the Volvo Ocean Race for a long time. We would love to sail against some of the older boats as well as some of the more modern ones.  We have already raced against Charles Jourdan (WRTRW 1989-90). The Volvo Ocean Race Legends regatta fell right in to place in our Atlantic and Caribbean race tour that is planned for 2011-12,” he added.

The boat is in original and fantastic condition and has been continuously maintained. Apart from some new electronics, she is in her original racing trim and is sure to be competitive next November in Alicante.
