Volvo Ocean Race, Wouter Verbraak da Team Russia a Team Delta Lloyd

[singlepic=1346,250,170,,left]Volvo Ocean Race – Singapore – L’ex navigatore di Team Russia, Wouter Verbraak, si unirà al Team Delta Lloyd al termine della prossima frazione della Volvo Ocean Race.

Rimasto senza ingaggio a causa del ritiro del team di Andreas Hanakamp, Verbraak è stato contattato assieme al collega Marcel Van Triest da Roberto Bermudez, in cerca di un velista in grado di sostituire lo statunitense Matt Gregory, sbarcatosi da Team Delta Lloyd pochi giorni dopo l’arrivo della flotta a Singapore, e ha dato la sua disponibilità a partire dallo stopover di Qingdao.

Nel frattempo, a coprire l’importante ruolo sarà il meteorologo olandese Frits Koek, che in carriera vanta già una vittoria nell’ambito della Volvo Ocean Race. Nel corso dell’edizione del 1997-98, infatti, prese parte all’impegnativa frazione Fort Lauderdale-Baltimora (870 miglia), guidando al successo Brunel Synergy, sino a quel momento protagonista di una partecipazione anonima.

“Ritornare in gara è davvero emozionante – ha spiegato Koek, assistente di terra di Gregory nel corso delle prime tre tappe – So cosa mi aspetta, quindi sono pronto dal punto di vista psicologico. Nonostante questo so che sarà molto dura dal punto di vista fisico”.

“Finché ci sarà da navigare di bolina non avremo bisogno di molte persone in coperta – ha fatto eco Roberto Bermudez – La cosa più importante sarà avere qualcuno bravo a chiamare i salti di vento e Frits è senza dubbio molto esperto”.

Per Vouter Werbraak si prospetta quindi l’opportunità di navigare con Roberto Bermudez e con il suo vice Guillermo Altadill, anch’egli fresco di ingaggio: “La Volvo Oceam Race è uno degli eventi più importanti nel mondo della vela ed è per questo che sono molto contento di tornare con Team Delta Lloyd. Il team sta mostrando grand potenzialità, è crescuto molto e ha spirito combattivo, tutti ingredienti chiave per poter ben figurare in questa maratona”.

Wouter Verbraak ha una carriera di tutto rispetto alle spalle, che include ottimi piazzamenti all’Admiral’s Cup, nel circuito TP52, nel Fastnet e in una lunga serie di regate oceaniche. E’ stato co-navigatore di Djuice Dragon nel 2001-2002 e navigatore di K-Challenge durante la 32ma America’s Cup. Inoltre ha ricoperto l’incarico di stratega per diversi solitari impegnati nella Vendée Globe, nella Route du Rhum, nella Transat Jacques Vabre ed ha lavorato per alcune squadre olimpiche in occasione dei Giochi del 2000 e del 2004.

VOLVO OCEAN RACE, WOUTER WERBRAAK TO JOIN TEAM DETLA LLOYD
[singlepic=1345,250,170,,left][Volvo Ocean Race Press Release] Wouter Verbraak, the former Team Russia navigator is to join Delta Lloyd at the end of the next leg of the Volvo Ocean race from Singapore to Qingdao in another round of crew change announcements for the Dutch-Irish syndicate.

Verbraak raced with Team Russia for the first three legs of the race but returned home when the project was suspended due to lack of funds. Following the departure of American Matt Gregory, skipper Roberto Bermudez de Castro approached both Verbraak and fellow Dutchman Marcel Van Triest as replacements and issues over availability have led to Verbraak’s appointment from Qingdao onwards.

As an interim solution, Dutch meteorologist Frits Koek, 53, joins the team for the next challenging leg having already had a taste of victory in the race. In 1997-98, he raced on Brunel Synergy for the tricky 870 nautical mile leg from Fort Lauderdale to Baltimore along the American coast which resulted in a famous victory.

“It is exciting and challenging to be back in this race,” said Koek who is employed by the Royal Dutch Meteorology Institute and who has worked closely with Gregory since the start.

Although it is a short notice, Koek is ready to take the challenge of the upcoming 2,500 miles to Qingdao. “I know what to expect, so mentally I am prepared for it. However, physically it is going to be tough.”

“Since we will sail mostly upwind, we don’t need that many persons on deck – skipper Chuny added – It is more important to have somebody who is calling the shifts all the time. Frits is an experienced meteorologist and he is familiar with this race.”

For Verbraak, the opportunity to sail with Chuny and newly appointed watchleader Guillermo Altadill was too good to miss.

“The Volvo Ocean Race is the pinnacle of sailing and I am very happy to be returning to the race with Team Delta Lloyd,” he said.

“The team is showing great potential, improvement and a fighting spirit; key ingredients in this ocean marathon. I very much look forward to sailing with Chuny and get back in the game together with Guillermo”

Verbraak has an extensive list of podium places including the Admiral’s Cup, TP 52 Med Circuit, various Fastnet and Trans-Atlantic Races. He was co-navigator for the Djuice Dragons team in the 2001-2002 Volvo Ocean Race and was navigator for the French team K-Challenge in the 32nd America’s Cup. He is also renowned for his shoreside strategy support for shorthanded races such as the Vendee Globe, Route du Rhum and Transat Jacques Vabres and he has advised Olympic sailors in both the 2000 and 2004 Olympics.
