Volvo Ocean Race, Team Delta Lloyd prepara il ritorno

[singlepic=1769,250,170,,left]Volvo Ocean Race – Qingdao – Ritiratosi a metà della quarta tappa in seguito al manifestarsi di importanti danni strutturali nelle sezioni prodiere dell’ex ABN Amro One, il Team Delta Lloyd sta preparando il proprio ritorno in campo. La barca, infatti, è stata caricata su un cargo che la trasporterà da Hong Kong a Rio dove verrà installata una nuova prua, costruita in Italia.
Secondo Killian Bushe, responsabile della costruzione della barca ai tempi della campagna del 2005-2006, l’ex scafo di Mike Sanderson è stato danneggiato dall’impatto con un oggetto semi-sommerso; la delaminazione è poi peggiorata a causa della tempesta che ha flagellato la flotta durante l’attraversamento dello Stretto di Luzon.
“Lo scafo è in sandwich, ciò significa che il core è avvolto da due strati di pelli sia internamente che esternamente. Agendo con gli ultrasuoni abbiamo scoperto che il core è spaccato. Inizialmente l’area danneggiata era di circa 400-500 millimetri quadrati, poi, con il continuo battere della barca sulle onde, l’equipaggio ha visto il danno espandersi a vista d’occhio, sino a raggiungere le dimensioni di 1 metro per 3,5. Qaundo il core è danneggiato, la struttura non può più reggere alcun carico”.
Come a dire che la fortuna è stata nel colpo d’occhio di Roberto Bermudez. Lo skipper, capita la gravità della situazione, ha ben pensato di interrompere la navigazione e fare rotta verso Taiwan, salvando, di fatto, la barca.
Ora Bushe attende che la barca arrivi a Rio de Janeiro assieme ad altri 7 tecnici: “Per prima cosa rimuoveremo la zona danneggiata, quindi procederemo alla sua sostituzione”.
Nel frattempo, un volto nuovo si affaccia nel sailing team. Guillermo Altadill, messo sotto contratto solo per le tape 4 e 5, sarà sostituito da Nick Bice. Bice, uomo di grande esperienza, è stato capo turno e comandante di ABN Amro Two nel corso dell’ultima Volvo Ocean Race ed è attualmente comandante di Team Origin. Già in precedenza aveva preso parte alla regata come membro dell’equipaggio di Team Amer Sport.

DELTA LLOYD ON THE MEND
[Volvo Ocean Race Press Release] Team Delta Lloyd has launched its comeback for the second half of the race, beginning with the start of Leg 6 from Rio.
The team retired from the brutal Leg 4 from Singapore to Qingdao with structural damage to her bow section. The boat is currently being shipped from Hong Kong to Rio where a new bow section, manufactured in Italy, will be fitted.
According to Killian Bushe, responsible for the build of Delta Lloyd, formerly ABN Amro One, the overall winner of the 2005-06 Volvo, the damage was the result of an impact rather than delamination. “The ultrasound test proved that the damage was caused by some impact,” he said.
“The hull is made of a sandwich construction, which means there are skins on either side of the core material. That core material was fractured by the collision. The damaged area was initially about 400-500 square millimetres, but by being unnoticed by the crew and the subsequent flexing from the continuous pounding in the large waves at the time, it increased to 3,5 meters by one meter wide. Once the core in a sandwich is damaged the panel can no longer support itself.”
Skipper Roberto Bermudez and his crew recognized the seriousness of the situation in time to nurse the boat to Taiwan from where it was transported to Hong Kong.
Bushe and a team of seven boat builders will manage the repair work in Rio. “We will first remove all the structure in the bow and cut away the damaged panel, which will then be replaced,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nick Bice has joined the sailing crew for the second half of the race. The 31-year-old Australian replaces Spain’s Guillermo Altadill who was only contracted for leg 4 and 5.
Bice, a qualified boat builder, was watch leader and boat captain for ABN Amro Two in the 2005-06 Volvo. He was also part of the Team Amer Sports campaign in 2001-02. More recently, he joined the British America’s Cup challenge Team Origin as boat captain and pitman.
