Volvo Ocean Race, la flotta ha passato Rotterdam

[singlepic=2700,300,204,,left]Volvo Ocean Race – Galway – Usciti dal canale della Manica, i protagonisti della Volvo Ocean Race hanno raggiunto Rotterdam, dove il Comitato Organizzat0re della manifestazione ha impegnato gli equipaggi in un circuito su due boe con rilievo cronometrico. Niente che valga ai fini della classifica generale, ma semplicemente un tempo di riferimento per le oltre settanta imbarcazioni di professionisti e semplici appassionati che si sono cimentate sullo stesso percorso nella speranza di essere i più veloci e vincere un viaggio a San Pietroburgo.

Per la cronaca, tra i VOR 70 il più rapido è stato Ericsson 3, fanalino di coda con oltre 50 miglia di ritardo, che sul lato di 3.6 miglia (7.2 in complessivo, quindi) con vento da 220 a 20-25 nodi ha impiegato 12 minuti e 40 secondi. Molto meglio di Puma (secondo con 14’03”) e Telefonica Black (14’35”).

Salutata Rotterdam la flotta ha messo la prua verso nord. Al comando, tanto per cambiare, è tornato Ericsson 4 che, incurante dei problemi di dlaminazione ha approcciato la città olandese tenendosi più a nord di tutti, comanda con 3 miglia su Green Dragon e 5 su Il Mostro. La buona notizia per Ken Read è che Telefonica Blue, suo avversario nel duello teso al raggiungimento della seconda posizione in classifica generale, arranca nelle retrovie con un ritardo dal battistrada di 18 miglia.

VOLVO OCEAN RACE, FLEET LEAVES ROTTERDAM
[Volvo Ocean Race Press Release] A quirky addition to Leg 8, the Rotterdam Gate Race, was completed this morning as the fleet passed by the Netherlands.

The gate race course was marked out by two rounding points requiring the fleet to complete a reaching loop. The idea was for the times set by the Volvo Open 70s to be logged and for professionals and amateurs to challenge those times when they were let loose on the course once the fleet had passed.

The 70s completed the 3.6 nautical mile time trial in 20-25 knots with the wind at 220. Ericsson 3, labouring at the back of the fleet in the Leg 8 standings, set the fastest time of 12 minutes 40 seconds. Thereafter the order was Puma (14’03”), Telefonica Black (14’35”), Telefonica Blue (14’56”), Green Dragon (14’58”), Delta Lloyd (15’03”), Ericsson 4 (15’11”).

As for the non-Volvo sailors, approximately 70 boats signed up for the challenge, sailing a combination of yachts, pogos, catamarans, moths and Extreme 40s.

Dutch Olympic Finn sailor, Pieter-Jan Postma, who was second at the 2007 world championships, will be racing, as will be the new Team Heiner 38 penned by Juan Kouyoumdjian, the Argentine designer of the two second generation Volvo Open 70s carrying Ericsson Racing team’s hopes in the 2008-09 race.

The crew of the fastest all-comer will win a trip to St Petersburg for the race finish. We will bring you the results later today.
