Volvo Ocean Race, Grant Dalton in contatto con Equipo Telefonica

[singlepic id=4764 w=300 h=204 float=left]Volvo Ocean Race – Auckland – IL CEO di Emirates Team New Zealand, Grant Dalton, ha confermato di avere avviato dei colloqui con l’Equipo Telefonica in vista della prossima Volvo Ocean Race. La notizia è stata diffusa da Richard Gladwell tramite Sail-World.
“Non è un segreto il fatto che sia molto attratto dall’idea di prendere parte a un altro giro del mondo e posso ammettere di aver parlato con l’Equipo Telefonica – ha affermato Dalton – Al momento non c’è nessun impegno da parte di nessuno. Ho più volte esortato Emirates Team New Zealand a considerare altre strade per espandere i propri orizzonti e il successo ottenuto nella stagione TP52 dimostra la fondatezza dei miei ragionamenti”.
Dalton, ovviamente, dovrebbe lasciare i kiwi in caso di coinvolgimento nella prossima Volvo Ocean Race, ma è scontato che a fine campagna ritornerà nel team, nel frattempo governato dalla coppia Barker-Shoebridge, con un ruolo simile a quello ricoperto da Sir Peter Blake nella Coppa America del 2000.
Il fuoriclasse neozelandese, che aveva a lungo lavorato a un progetto congiunto con lo Yacht Club Costa Smeralda prima che il club italiano riversasse i suoi sforzi nel Louis Vuitton Trophy e, quindi, nel progetto Coppa America, guarda con interesse all’Equipo Telefonica, unico assieme all’Ericsson Racing team ad aver iscritto due barche all’ultima edizione, anche perchè il progettista delle barche del team spagnolo sarà Marcelino Botin, storico designer di Emirates Team New Zealand.
Un’opportunità al vaglio del management del team iberico, derivante dal fatto che le campagne con due barche sono bandite, sarebbe quella di creare un secondo sindacato, sponsorizzato da Telefonica, da affidare proprio a Grant Dalton e che potrebbe regatare con un team composto da membri di Emirates Team New Zealand, mentre il Telefonica spagnolo continuerebbe a essere guidato da Pedro Campos e avrebbe un equipaggio tutto iberico.
VOLVO OCEAN RACE, GRANT DALTON CLOSE TO EQUIPO TELEFONICA
[Source Sail World] Emirates Team NZ CEO, Grant Dalton has confirmed to Sail-World that he has been in discussion with Spanish telco Telefonica regarding an involvement in the next Volvo Ocean Race.
Dalton would not disclose the specifics of his involvement, saying: “It is no secret of my desire to be involved in the Volvo Ocean Race and yes I have spoken to Telefonica. There is no commitment at this stage from either party. I have also stated a number of times that Emirates Team New Zealand should consider expanding its horizons, the successful TP52 season is an example of that and the Volvo Ocean Race must be considered as well”.
Sail-World has spoken to several international media sources who confirmed their belief that Dalton was discussing a CEO and skipper role with Telefonica who had two entries in the last edition Volvo Ocean Race.
While many of those spoken to by Sail-World believed Dalton was to depart Emirates Team New Zealand, it is not believed that this is the case. Dalton is expected to drop back into a role for the professional team, similar to that adopted by Sir Peter Blake in the 2000 America’s Cup Defence in New Zealand, leaving Dean Barker as skipper and Kevin Shoebridge in an Operations role. Dalton would obviously have a more hands on role with the Volvo Ocean Race type projects…
