Volvo Ocean Race, Ericsson 4 primo al cancello di Mauritius

[singlepic=829,250,170,,left] Volvo Ocean Race – Oceano Indiano – E’ stato Ericsson 4 il primo VOR 70 a raggiungere il cancello della seconda tappa posto in corrispondenza dei 58° di longitudine est. Lo scafo di Torben Grael, transitato oltre la linea alle 03.45 GMT di questa notte, ha raccolto quattro punti, anticipando Ericsson 3 di Anders Lewander che, varcando lo scoring gate più a nord, si trova ora al comando della flotta con un vantaggio di circa quindici miglia sui compagni di squadra.
La coppia di testa, infatti, appena incassati i punti in palio, hanno messo le prue verso nord, iniziando la marcia di avvicinamento a Cochin, lontana quasi tremila miglia.
Ormai prossimi al traguardo volante anche Green Dragon e Team Russia, premiati dalla scelta di navigare più a sud di tutti in questa fase iniziale della frazione.
Tra i quattro scafi rimasti a nord, invece, si attende un arrivo in volata tra i due equipaggi dell’Equipo Telefonica e NED-1 del Team Delta Lloyd. Il Mostro, infatti, a causa dei ben noti problemi strutturali, ha dovuto mettere la prua verso nord anzitempo e, a meno di sorprese, dovrebbe raggiungere l’allineamento con Mauritius a cavallo tra la terzultima e la penultima posizione.
A ben vedere, la scelta di Andrew Cape, navigatore di Ken Read, potrebbe risultare meno penalizzante del previsto. Iniziando la risalita con così largo anticipo, infatti, lo scafo del Puma Racing Team ha guadagnato terreneo nei confronti degli avversari e si trova ora in terza posizione. Tutto dipenderà da come il VOR 70 del Puma Racing Team riuscirà a sopportare le conseguenza del doppio sinistro registrato nei giorni scorsi.

ERICSSON 4 FIRST TO THE SCORING GATE
[singlepic=830,250,170,,left] [Volvo Ocean Race Press Release] Ericsson 4, skippered by Torben Grael, was the first boat to the scoring gate at longitudinal 58 degrees east on the second leg of the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09. Grael and his men crossed the line at 03:45 GMT to collect their four points. Once across Grael pointed the bow north for the 3,000-mile home stretch to Cochin.
Anders Lewander’s Ericsson 3 followed her sister ship and crossed the waypoint at 06:51 to pick up 3.5 points.
Among the pursuing pack, Green Dragon, Team Russia and the Telefonica twins are squabbling over the remaining podium position.
Bouwe Bekking on Telefonica Blue, likes his chances of decent points, noting as he did that the ailing Puma has slowed over the past 12 hours due to structural damage: “Looks like Puma is having some issues, sailing very slow,” he observed in an email earlier this morning. “Hopefully their issue are not too big and that they are not forced to stop on their way. But it might mean that we can catch them and gain a valuable half point. The same said for our mates on the Black boat. They got the better of us some days back, but now we are catching them again, also that will be a close call for the points.”
According to Race Meteorologist, Jennifer Lilly, as the fleet heads north-east ovet the 24-48 hours “they will be looking forward to a few days of trade wind sailing”.
A blessed relief from the mauling they have taken in the Roaring Forties.
