Volvo Ocean Race, Ericsson 3 torna in gara

[singlepic=1713,250,170,,left]Volvo Ocean Race – Qingdao – Oggi, approssimativamente alle 20.00 ora locale, Ericsson 3 ha lasciato Hualien, Taiwan, con destinazione Qingdao per completare la tappa numero quattro della Volvo Ocean Race.
A bordo della barca ci sono 7 membri dell’equipaggio scandinavo fra i quali lo skipper Magnus Olsson, il navigatore Aksel Magdahl, il comandante Jens Dolmer, il timoniere Thomas Johanson, Anders Dahlsjo, Martin Krite, Martin Stromberg e il responsabile della comunicazione Gustav Morin.
Olsson e compagni prima di riprendere ufficialmente la regata devono ritornare allo stesso punto dove il 27 gennaio avevano abbandonato la gara, circa 60 miglia nautiche a Nord di Taiwan. Se tutto andrà per il verso giusto l’equipaggio dovrebbe raggiungere questo punto in un tempo stimabile tra le 6 e le 8 ore.
Dopo due settimane di lavoro senza soste la barca è stata riparata ed ora sarà una gara contro il tempo per arrivare a Qingdao sabato, in orario per partire per la quinta tappa.
“Abbiamo davvero lavorato come dei pazzi – ha detto Olsson – Sia i costruttori che i velisti hanno combattuto contro il tempo ed ora siamo nuovamente pronti. Voglio davvero ringraziare tutti per il fantastico lavoro svolto”.
L’obbiettivo consiste nel portare a termine la quarta tappa per ottenere i 4 punti che spettano alla quinta barca che taglia la linea del traguardo di Qingdao.
Chris Bedford, il metereologo del team, prevede una traversata relativamente veloce, si augura che l’equipaggio possa arrivare in porto con sufficiente tempo a disposizione per caricare la barca e partire per la quinta tappa alla volta di Rio de Janeiro, Brasile, insieme alle altre quattro barche che compongono l’intera flotta.
“L’80% della traversata dovrebbe avvenire con vento favorevole – ha detto Bedford – ma potrebbe andare bene o male. C’e’ una zona dove probabilmente incontreranno venti dai 30 ai 50 nodi , ma almeno provenienti da Sud. Poi incontreranno un’altra zona, circa 100 miglia nautiche, dove il vento soffierà da Nord, e potrebbe rallentarli. Se saranno comunque in grado di navigare al 100% potrebbero arrivare nel corso della tarda nottata di venerdì o all’alba di sabato”.
Nelle ultime due settimane è stata una gara contro una situazione difficile per riuscire a riparare Ericsson 3, rimetterlo in acqua e farlo arrivare a Qingdao, in tempo per l’inizio della quinta tappa. Questo ora sembra essere un obbiettivo possibile.
“Non stiamo assolutamente pensando a quanto freddo potremmo incontrare lungo l’attraversata, e non siamo sicuramente preoccupati per il forte vento che troveremo per arrivare a Qingdao – ha detto Olsson – Siamo solamente molto felici di essere nuovamente in gara”.
“Se le previsioni atmosferiche sono corrette secondo Aksel, il nostro navigatore, impiegheremo approssimativamente 50 ore per raggiungere Qingdao. Questo significherebbe arrivare li la notte tra venerdì e sabato: in tempo per partire per la quinta tappa” ha detto Olsson.
ERICSSON 3 DEPARTS TAIWAN
[singlepic=1714,250,170,,left][Ericsson Racing Team Press Release] Ericsson 3 departed Hualien, Taiwan, today at approximately 2000 local time (12.00 GMT) bound here for the finish of Leg 4 of the Volvo Ocean Race.
Aboard the yacht were seven members of the Nordic crew, including skipper Magnus Olsson, navigator Aksel Magdahl, boat captain Jens Dolmer, helmsman Thomas Johanson, Anders Dahlsjo, Martin Krite, Martin Stromberg and media crewman Gustav Morin.
Olsson and mates must return to the waypoint about 60 nautical miles north of Taiwan where they suspended racing on Jan 27 before they officially resume racing. If all goes well the crew should reach the waypoint in six to eight hours.
After two weeks of hard work the boat is repaired and now there will be a race against time to reach Qingdao in time for the start of Leg 5 on Saturday.
“We have really worked like maniacs,” said Olsson. “The boatbuilders and sailors have fought around the clock and now we’re back on track. I really want to give all the guys credit for a fantastic job.”
The goal is to finish Leg 4 and collect the 4 points available for being the fifth boat to Qingdao.
Team meteorologist Chris Bedford is predicting a relatively fast passage, raising hopes that the crew might finish with enough time to load the boat and begin Leg 5 to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the other four boats in the fleet.
“Eighty-percent will likely be in following breeze,” said Bedford, “but it might be feast or famine. There’s an area where they’re likely to experience 30 or 35 knots, but at least it’ll be from the south. Then there’s an area about 100 miles out where they’ll experience northerlies, which might slow them down. But if they’re able to sail the boat near 100 percent, they could be in late Friday night or early Saturday morning.”
It’s been a race against odds for the past two weeks to get Ericsson 3 repaired, back in the water and to Qingdao in time for the start of Leg 5, but now it looks possible.
“We are not thinking anything about how cold the trip can be and we are definitely not worrying about the strong winds we will have going up there,” Olsson said. “We are just so happy to be back. At the same time, we must keep it all together.
“But if the weather forecast is correct then our navigator, Aksel, thinks it will take us about 50 hours to get to Qingdao. That could mean that we will be there the night between Friday and Saturday – in time for the start of Leg 5,” said the ever-ebullient Olsson.
