Volvo Ocean Race, con l’arrivo di Green Dragon si chiude la sesta tappa

[singlepic=2373,300,204,,left]Volvo Ocean Race – Boston – Con l’arrivo di Gren Dragon, anonimo protagonista della sesta tappa della Volvo Ocean Race, tutti i VOR 70 iscritti alla’evento sono ora ormeggiati alle banchine di Boston. A rallentare lo scafo di Ian Walker, rimasto nelle retrovie per tutta la frazione, è stata la totale assenza di vento delle ultime ore. Ad anticipare Green Dragon sul traguardo statunitense sono stati, nell’ordine, Ericsson 4, Ericsson 3, Telefonica Blue, Il Mostro, Team Delta Lloyd e Telefonica Black.
“Aspettavamo di arrivare a Boston da molto tempo – ha confessato Walker dopo l’arrivo – forse perchè è la tappa che precede il salto verso Galway che oltre a porre fine all’esperienza oceanica segnerà il nostro ritorno in Europa, più esattamente in Irlanda. Quella di oggi è stata una giornata davvero fantastica: abbiamo navigato sotto spinnaker per svariate ore, sotto il sole, nella quiete: direi che al mondo c’è di peggio. Purtroppo abbiamo perso l’occasione di duellare con Telefonica Black, ma la notte scorsa ha davvero azzerato le nostre possibilità di rimonta”.
“Come sempre non ci siamo arresi e credo che essere qui con lo stesso equipaggio con il quale ho condiviso la lunga tappa da Qingdao a Rio de Janeiro sia il messaggio piùforte che noi di Green Dragon possiamo dare a chi segue la regata”.
“Prendere parte alla Volvo Ocean Race cambia il tuo modo di vedere la vela per sempre. Una volta, quando dovevo attraversare il Canale d’Inghilterra, avevo la sensazione di dover stare in mare giorni e giorni. Ora sono negli Stati Uniti e mi sento vicinissimo a casa”.
Ora le barche verranno prese in consegna dagli shore team che le sottoporranno alle solite manutenzioni e le riconsegneranno agli equipaggi per la In-Port Race del 9 maggio. La partenza della settima tappa, invece, è previsto per il 16 maggio. Una frazione molto breve: 2550 miglia alla volta di Galway, un altro nuovo approdo, come lo è Boston, per la Volvo Ocean Race.

VOLVO OCEAN RACE, GREEN DRAGON ARRIVES IN BOSTON TO COMPLETE THE VOLVO FLEET
[Volvo Ocean Race Press Release] It was another tough leg for Ian Walker and his crew on Green Dragon who crossed the finish today in Boston at 14.08 GMT in seventh place, after suffering a knockdown in a heavy gust yesterday.
“We’ve been looking forward to Boston for a long time,” said skipper Ian Walker, “It’s the first step to Galway if you like. What a perfect day, spinnaker up all the way down the river, the sun’s out, there are worse things in the world. I’m just pleased we had a bit of a race of it. We had a few little opportunities and we got within a few hours of other boats, and as you saw with Telefonica Black, you can make up some miles. But we had a terrible night last night – no wind at all, just flapping around – we’re just lucky we had enough wind to get in here today”.
“We don’t give up until the other boats have crossed the finishing line. There’s always hope”.
“I just had a chat with the lads at the end and I said, ‘a lot of crews wouldn’t still be together after the tough last leg, running out of food and the problems we’ve had to overcome, and then this leg, finishing last and slipping further and further behind on the long reaching sequence…’ But I think the fact that we’re all here, we’re all smiling, that speaks volumes”.
“It’s funny how your concept of scale changes. I used to think sailing across the English Channel was a long way. Now, when I got in the Atlantic, I thought I was nearly home. I’d never done a transatlantic before this race, but now Galway doesn’t seem far away at all.”
It is the first time that the Volvo Ocean Race has stopped in Boston and the seven crews will now be able to have good recuperation period in Fan Pier before the in-port race on 9 May. The start of leg seven, on 16 May, will take the fleet 2,550 nm back across the Atlantic and into Galway, Ireland, another new port for this edition of race.
