Vendée Globe, l’uomo da battere

[singlepic=1096,250,170,,left] Vendée Globe – Oceano Indiano – Lanciati verso la longitudine di Cape Leeuwin, i solitari della Vendée Globe seguono quello che nel corso degli ultimi giorni si è prodotto in un allungo anche del miglior Bolt. Jean Pierre Dick e il suo Paprec Virbac 2 sono i leader indiscussi della regata e si sono imposti durante la cavalcata dell’Oceano Indiano, diverso in alcuni momenti da quello che conosciamo, ma pur sempre luogo di Quaranta Ruggenti e iceberg alla deriva.
Il solitario francese è ufficialmente in fuga. Una fuga venuta dal sud e iniziata prima del ritiro di Loick Peyron, tradito dall’albero del suo Gitana Eighty. A seguirlo, leggermente più a nord ma ottanta miglia dietro, è Mike Golding.
Michel Desjoyeaux è tornato a oltre centodieci miglia. Strano pensare che solo qualche giorno fa, essere alla stessa distanza dal leader voleva dire essere a ridosso della decima posizione. Forse lo skipper di Foncia può aver deciso di tirare un pò il freno, dopo aver visto quanto successo a Bernard Stamm, finito con il timone rotto dopo aver tirato al massimo nel tentativo di recuperare il pesante distacco. Eventualità da non escludere, ma a nessuno piace perdere miglia, specie quando si è consci che, da qui a poco, si potrebbe materializzare l’opportunità di una rimonta. Lo scontro tra due depressioni ha creato una bolla di vento leggero proprio sulla rotta dei solitari. Le velocità stanno già sentendo e Dick ha fatto segnare una media appena sufficiente per restare nella top ten. Dietro, Riou e Le Cléac’h avanzano spediti, ma, da quelle parti, è un altra storia.
Dalle parti di Desjoyeaux gravita anche Jourdain su Veolia Evironnement. Dietro loro, il vuoto. Sebastiene Josse, leader di un tempo che fu, è a 165.6 miglia dalla vetta.

GUNSLINGER STILL IN RANGE
[Vendée Globe Press Release] Michel Desjoyeaux, now up to third, is quickest of the leading trio. He alluded briefly to one or two technical problems in this morning’s abbreviated radio broadcast, but Foncia shows very competitive speeds this afternoon and early evening and of course it is always not easy to interpret what is wordplay smokescreen and what is actual fire with some of the 2001 victor’s reports.
“I don’t tell you everything. Everytime it’s calm, I have work to do, usually some serious stuff. I was just doing a repair job when you contacted me. I was taking advantage of 32 hours or so of calmer weather to deal with a problem that’s been with me for a few days now…” he said today.
After describing himself as riding up to the pack with his gun over his shoulder, he is certainly within range at 109.3 miles off the lead, but given the pace and that the race is still not yet half over, that deficit is nothing in the greater scheme of things.
He has lost ten miles to Dick since early this morning.
Jean-Pierre Dick’s lead is 78.6 miles this evening, with speeds basically ascending down the top 10, suggesting that the likes of Riou and Le Cléach 300 miles behind the leaders are being pushed along on schedule by the front of the next depression. The duo are quickest making 18.5 and 18.6 knots.
