[singlepic=1276,170,250,,left]Vendée Globe – Oceano Pacifico – Alle 00.26 GMT della notte scorsa, Jean Le Cam ha chiamato il suo shore team per segnalare alcune anomalie a bordo di VM Materiaux. La comunicazione tra la terzza e il solitario francese, che al momento della telefonata era terzo a duecento miglia da Capo Horn, si è interrotta bruscamente e i tecnici del team non sono più stati in grado di contattare l’IMOCA 60 di Le Cam. Sulla zona il vento, proveniente da ovest-sudovest, soffiava attorno ai 25-30 nodi e lo stato del mare era pessimo.
Immediatamente il Centro di Soccorso Marittimo Internazionale ha allertato Vincent Riou (PRB) e Armel Le Cléac’h (Brit Air), chiedendogli di modificare la rotta per dirigersi verso la posizione di VM Materiaux (56°17’S-73°46’W). All’operazione di recupero partecipa anche la petroliera Sanagol Kassagie, in transito a poche miglia dal luogo dell’incidente. All’01.40 GMT, mentre l’Aeronautica cilena predisponeva un volo di ricognizione, dal quartier generale della Vendée Globe veniva comunicato che a bordo dell’IMOCA 60 in difficoltà è stato attivato uno dei sistemi di allarme, il Sarsat-Cospas.
AGGIORNAMENTO, 11.56 – Alle 09.45 GMT, l’aereo dell’Aeronautica cilena decollato per effetture una ricognizione sul tratto di mare indicato dalla Direzione Gara della Vendée Globe, ha informato Denis Horeau di aver individuato VM Materiaux. La barca sarebbe ribaltata di 180° e non è chiaro se la chiglia è ancora al suo posto o meno.
Intanto, in zona è giunta la petroliera Sanagol Kassagie, immediatamente dirottata verso Jean Le Cam dal Centro di Soccorso Marittimo Internazionale. Il Comandante del cargo ha comunicato di avere VM Materiaux in vista, anche se non è ancora riuscito a stabilire nessuno contatto con lo skipper che, si presume, sia chiuso all’interno dello scafo. Ad alimentare tale speranza è il fatto che alle 08.50 GMT di oggi qualcuno, a bordo dell’IMOCA 60 rovesciato, ha attivato l’EPIRB.
Le condizioni meteo restano molto impegnative. Il vento è aumentato e soffia ora attorno ai 40 nodi al pari del moto ondoso.
Nel corso di un collegamento telefonico con la Direzione Gara, Vincent Riou (PRB) ha confermato che questa notte stava parlando con Jean Le Cam quando ha sentito un forte rumore provenire da bordo di VM Materiaux.

VENDEE GLOBE, JEAN LE CAM IN DFFICULTY
[Vendée Globe Press Release] At 00.26 GMT Jean Le Cam informed his shore team that he was in distress two hundred miles west of Cape Horn. Jean Le Cam (VM Matériaux) was able to telephone his shore team in France to inform that he was experiencing serious difficulties on board his monohull. It was possible that he was capsizing, as the phone went dead at that point. The boat was located at 56° 17’ S and 73° 46’ W, or around 200 miles West of Cape Horn. At the time, the weather conditions were generating 25-knot westerly to south-westerly winds with stronger gusts.
Immediately the MRCC (International Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) was alerted and Vincent Riou (PRB) and Armel Le Cléac’h (Brit Air) have changed course to go to the zone where Jean Le Cam was sailing: they should reach this zone at around 13.00 GMT. The Sarsat-Cospas distress beacon on the monohull was triggered at 01.40 GMT. The rescue services are preparing to intervene and the plan of action will be updated as information is received by the Race Directors. A special news flash will be issued at 06h GMT.
UPDATE, 11.56 – The Chilean search and rescue plane deployed to assist VM Matériaux, following Jean Le Cam’s distress call at 01.40 GMT, this morning flew over the area at 09.45 and has confirmed sight of the IMOCA 60. The yacht is reported to be upside down, however it is not clear whether the keel is still attached.
The cargo vessel Sanangol Kassagie, a 180-tonne petrol tanker, diverted to the scene is currently less than one mile from VM Matériaux’s location and has also got the yacht in sight. No contact has yet been made with VM Matériaux, however the yacht’s second EPIRB was activated at 08.50 GMT this morning. Conditions in the area are believed to be winds of 25-30 knots, gusting 40, with a rough sea state of 4-5m. The captain of the Sanangol Kassagie is understood to be working out best to assist Le Cam.
Vincent Riou (PRB), one of two skippers diverted to assist VM Matériaux, reported that he was talking to Le Cam when there was a strange noise on board VM Matériaux. Le Cam was inside the yacht and contacted his shore team indicating that he thought the boat was about to capsize.
