Vendée Globe, enigma Doldrum

[singlepic=1453,250,170,,left]Vendée Globe – Oceano Atlantico – Sembra quasi che i Doldrums abbiano su Roland Jourdain lo stesso effetto di un ricostituente. Da quando Foncia e Michel Desjoyeaux ci si sono trovati nel mezzo, Veolia Environnement ha recuperato parecchio del terreno perso nei giorni precedenti e si è riportato a 313.9 miglia dal leader dopo aver superato il muro delle 500. Certo, Bilou sa che prima o poi toccherà anche a lui l’incontro con le calme equatoriali, ma intanto si gode il momento positivo, con la consapevolezza, giunto a questo punto, di non aver nulla da perdere.

Mentre Michel Desjoyeaux ha fondati motivi di credere di aver superato i Doldrums – la velocità di Foncia è tornata a salire – è difficile prevedere cosa lascerà per strada Roland Jourdain al momento del suo ingresso nelle calme.

Forse lo skipper di Veolia Environnement, come i grandi campioni di scacchi, è già concentrato sulla mossa successiva, ovvero l’approccio dell’alta pressione delle Azzorre che, se male interpretata, potrebbe creare non pochi stravolgimenti in seno alla classifica.

Per quanto riguarda gli inseguitori, Armel Le Cléac’h è terzo a 1034.7 miglia dalla vetta, seguito in quarta posizione da Marc Guillemot che navigando lungo la costa brasiliana ha trovato aria più intensa e ha superato Samantha Davies, ora quarta.

VENDEE GLOBE, MEDICINE TIME?
[Vendée Globe Press Release] It looks like Roland Jourdain may be about to take his medicine in the Doldrums, slowing this evening to less than nine knots. But he can be reasonably happy with his gains since the end of the weekend, now just under 314 miles behind Foncia.

And while Mich Desj is making good his advantage, getting progressively into the tradewinds and accelerating again, it is hard to predict what the net effect of the Doldrums will be on Bilou. But while the trade winds look well organised and Mich Desj should be able to regain a lot of his lost miles from the last couple of days, up ahead the Azores High is playing funny games and could bar his route in a week’s time, but that is a long way off yet.

Marc Guillemot is going well close to the Brasilian coast and is fastest this evening, making 17.8 knots while Sam Davies is now back up to 13.3 knots. Brian Thompson’s lead over Dee Caffari is still at a consistent 78 miles, while Dee has 83 miles in hand over Arnaud Boissières.
