Vendée Globe, allungo vincente?

[singlepic=1430,170,250,,left]Vendée Globe – Oceano Atlantico – Mentre transita 14 miglia al largo di Fernando de Noronha, Michel Desjoyeaux sorride. Lo skipper di Foncia, ormai prossimo alle calme equatoriali, ha un vantaggio su Roland Jourdain davvero importante – circa 500 miglia – specie se considerato in rapporto alla distanza che Desjoyeaux deve percorrere per raggiungere Les Sables d’Olonne.
Quando vinse l’edizione del 2001, Michel Desjoyeaux entrò in Atlantico con un margine di 600 miglia sul più immediato degli inseguitori, e lo vide consumarsi poco a poco prima di piazzare la zampata vincente. Ques’anno, invece, la storia gira all’inverso. Doppiato Capo Horn, infatti, il solitario francese era incalzato da Roland Jourdain, capace di tenergli testa durante l’intera attraversata del Pacifico.
Dietro gli skipper cominciano ad accusare la presenza della alta pressione di Sant’Elena. Samantha Davies, quarta dietro ad Armel Le Cléac’h, ha rallentato il passo sin quasi a fermarsi. Per lei la media degli ultimi rilevamenti è di 2.8 nodi. Di tutt’altro spessore la media di Brian Thompson che, a bordo di Bahrain Team Pindar sta spingendo forte sull’acceleratore, quasi a volersi allontanare il più rapidamente possibile da quel tratto di mare che l’altro ieri è stato battuto da una burrasca violentissima.
In serata dovrebbe doppiare Capo Horn Steve White: la sua media è di circa 12 nodi e la distanza da coprire per raggiungere la Terra del Fuoco è di 277 miglia.

VENDEE GLOBE, SOMETHING IN THE AIR OFF FERNANDO DE NORONHA, AT 500 MILES OF LEAD IT COULD BE VICTORY
[Vendée Globe Press Release] Michel Desjoyeaux is just 14 miles off the island of Fernando de Noronha this evening, in possession now of a lead of a round 500 miles. And the bad news for Roland Jourdain is that he is not slowing down much and the lead of the Foncia skipper looks set to grow more before it stabilises.
In 2001, when he won Desjoyeaux entered the South Atlantic with a lead of some 600 miles and lost it before he had to win it back, this time his margin departing the southern hemisphere could be of the same order.
Sam Davies has slowed and is struggling with light airs, making just 2.1 knots on Roxy, with an average of only 2.8 knots, whilst Armel Le Cléach is not much better in third, making just 7.7 knots.
Steve White’s distance to Cape Horn is now 277 miles and so, averaging just over 12 knots, he should round somewhere between 14.00 GMT and 19.00 GMT tomorrow afternoon/evening.
Brian Thompson is starting to press Bahrain Team Pindar in the long Atlantic swells making 15.7 knots, he is joint quickest in the fleet tonight, and should start to open distance on the persistent Arnaud Boissières. Dee Caffari is giving the boys a run for their money despite her ‘mini-mainsail’ making the same speed as Brian.
Rich Wilson has remained between eight and nine knots making steady progress on Great American III, shaving 33 miles off his distance to Cape Horn in the four hours to 18.30 GMT, while the duelling Sedlacek and Dinelli have just 2.4 miles in it, with the upper hand held by the skipper from Olonnes sur Mer, Dinelli.
