Green Dragon, barca fantasma

[singlepic=564,250,170,,left]Volvo Ocean Race – Oceano Atlantico – Green Dragon, il VOR 70 di Ian Walker, è stata la prima barca a sfruttare lo Stealth Play, ovvero la possibilità di celare la propria posizione agli avversari – e ai lettori – per le prossime dodici ore. La possibilità di rendersi invisibili per quattro rilevamenti consecutivi è una novità di questa edizione ed è uno strumento che gli skipper possono utilizzare una sola volta nel corso di ogni singola tappa per prendere scelte tattiche importanti.
L’equipaggio di Green Dragon ha evidentemente valutato di poter trarre un importante vantaggio passando in modalità invisibile.
In attesa di vedere quali saranno i risultati di tale scelta, Ericsson 4 e Puma Racig Team hanno preso la testa della gara navigando a est delle Isole Canarie. A ventinove miglia dalla coppia di testa staziona Ericsson 3, seguito dal sorprendente Team Delta Lloyd. Particolarmente interessante è la scelta di Telefonica Black, l’unico equipaggio a aver scelto di navigare a ovest delle Canarie.

Green Dragon in hiding
[Volvo Ocean Race Press Release] Ian Walker’s Green Dragon team has become the first boat to enter into StealthPlay, a move that hides its position from the other teams – and us – for 12 hours.
The race organisers introduced the SteathPlay concept as a way to give the skippers and navigators a way to express their creativity allowing a team to make a move without the others knowing what they are doing. With position reports being issued to the fleet every three hours, there is very little time for a team to make a break from the others.
Green Dragon entered StealthPlay at 04.00 and will not re-emerge onto the radar screens of the opposition until 16.00 today. Teams are allowed to make one StealthPlay on each of the long offshore legs.
Meanwhile, out on the race course, Ericsson 4 and Puma Racing Team appear to have made the correct choice by sailing around the east of the Canary Islands. They’ve leapt out to a 29 mile lead over the (presumed) third place Ericsson 3.
And how about Delta Lloyd? The last-minute entry is up to fourth place on the leaderboard, also benefitting from better conditions to the East of the Canary Islands.
