iShares Cup, BMW Oracle Racing leader della prima ora

[singlepic=2495,300,204,,left]iShares Cup – Venezia – Ribaltamenti di fronte continui e vento capriccioso per la regata di debutto dell’iShares Cup. Dopo i test dell’altro ieri, che avevano visto un po’ in sordina i grandi favoriti della competizione, ieri BMW Oracle Racing ha messo in luce tutto il talento del suo giovane skipper australiano James Spithill. Il team ha infatti chiuso in testa la prima giornata, ottenendo ben 40 punti, con una vittoria nella gara d’avvio, un secondo posto nella quarta, un terzo nell’ultima manche, cioè la quinta. Ad insidiarne seriamente il podio solo Gitana Extreme-Groupe LCF Rothschild (36 punti), guidata dal francese Yann Guichard, e Oman Sail’s Masirah del britannico Pete Cumming (35).

Difficile in ogni caso fare previsioni certe sull’esito finale di domenica , visto che gli spazi stretti del bacino San Marco, così come gli improvvisi cali e cambi di vento, sono in grado di modificare facilmente gli equilibri della competizione. Dopo aver sfiorato i 20 nodi nelle battute iniziali, l’ultima manche ha rischiato addirittura di veder bloccati in acqua i catamarani; ciononostante il pubblico non è apparso affatto deluso, dal momento che le centinaia di spettatori lungo Riva dei Martiri hanno avuto modo d’osservare da vicino i team e le loro ingegnose manovre, soprattutto in fase di partenza. Come ha evidenziato Tim Hancock, direttore di regata, “una delle maggiori difficoltà del comitato di gara è stata quella di adattare l’abituale percorso degli Extreme 40 alle peculiarità della laguna. Abbiamo accorciato di molto la linea di partenza, quasi la metà dell’usuale, così come il percorso, al fine di accrescere la spettacolarità della competizione”.

Su questo campo così complesso non sono mancati neppure colpi di scena, come il tamponamento di Groupama 40 su Ecover, che ha portato alla squalifica del team francese nella quinta prova.

“Anche se al debutto nell’iShares Cup – ha commentato Yann Guichard, di Gitana Extreme-Groupe LCF Rothschild – ci siamo trovati subito a nostro agio a Venezia, dal momento che le condizioni del bacino esaltano le capacità strategiche, accanto allo sforzo agonistico. Non a caso abbiamo guadagnato 9 punti proprio nell’ultima e difficilissima manche, quando il vento soffiava ad appena 3 nodi”.

“In queste condizioni ogni aspetto tattico è importantissimo – ha ribattuto prontamente James Spithill, di BMW Oracle Racing – ma bisogna ammettere che un pizzico di fortuna può sempre offrire una spinta in più. Basta trovarsi nel punto giusto al momento giusto e tutto può succedere. Senza dubbio sarà una tappa difficile, ma siamo qui per vincere e daremo il meglio di noi stessi”.

Per quanto il meteo di oggi sia stato poco costante, domani è atteso un miglioramento che dovrebbe valorizzare ancor più le capacità tecniche degli equipaggi, così come il grande afflusso del pubblico.

HEAVYWEIGHTS STAY CLOSE IN LIGHT AIR
[iShares Press Release] Despite challenging conditions at the opening round of the iShares Cup Venice, the 10 Extreme 40s put away five races this afternoon, before the breeze died. The race course is set along the Riva dei Setti, within striking distance of St Mark’s Square, and the 40-ft catamarans were tacking and gybing within meters of the wall. The racing was hotly contested with no team gaining a clear advantage and it was a case of mixed fortunes for some. Ultimately, consistency paid off for James Spithill’s BMW Oracle Racing who after winning the first race emerged as leaders at the end of the first day of the 2009 iShares Cup Extreme 40 Sailing Series. Gitana Extreme – Groupe LCF Rotschild, Renaissance (Oman Sail) and Masirah (Oman Sail) also made a remarkable debut, the latter only being one point behind Yann Guichard’s team on the provisional leaderboard!

After a windless and overcast morning (although the scenery remains magical no matter what!), the breeze started to fill in shortly after midday and the 10 Extreme 40s took to the racecourse under menacing skies and a few drops of rain. The first four races of the day were held in around 6 to 8 knots of breeze, but by the end of the afternoon the wind had died and conditions were more than challenging for the crews.

With two consecutive second places and a win in race 3, Gitana Extreme – Groupe LCF Rothschild impressed by their speed, consistency and tactics, and with BMW Oracle Racing and Renaissance (Oman Sail) having posted a win each, the leading boats were clearly identified early in the competition. Also impressive was Oman Sail‘s Masirah, winning two races and clearly benefiting from an intensive winter training. As Pete Cumming, Masirah‘s skipper, noted yesterday “We’ve worked a lot and did not make any changes to the crew compared to last year, so I expect it to pay off, but of course with the level of our opponents, we have to be humble.” Humble or not, Pete and his crew certainly looked very confident on the tight Venetian racecourse today, and will be watched closely by their rivals tomorrow.

The racecourse, kept traffic-free by the local maritime authorities who had diverted the large number of ferries, waterbuses, taxis and other goods transport vessels, saw a few near misses and low-impact collisions today. Holmatro failed to give way to BMW Oracle (on starboard tack, which grants priority) and bumped into the American Extreme 40 without causing serious damage. A comparable incident led to the disqualification of Groupama 40 in the last race. In light and fluky airs, and with not a lot of room to breathe around the marks, a couple of typical tense roundings occured, proving – if needed – that the iShares Cup is set to be more disputed than ever! This provided good entertainment value for the spectators along the Riva dei Setti!
