iShares Cup, botta e risposta

La manche d’apertura della seconda giornata di competizione aveva lasciato credere che il catamarano capolista Bmw Oracle Racing dominasse l’intera gara, invece i francesi di Gitane Extreme-Groupe LCF Rothschild si sono rivelati avversari orgogliosi, oltre che davvero temibili.

Sbalorditiva la costanza con cui il team di Yann Guichard è riuscito ad ottenere piazzamenti utili, aggiudicandosi altri 2 secondi posti e una vittoria nella manche successiva il debutto, per cedere il passo agli australiani di James Spithill solo nell’ultima prova (dove si sono classificati sesti). Ora i francesi guidano la classifica con 78 punti, essendosi lasciati alle spalle BMW Oracle Racing con 74 punti.

“Siamo molto contenti per le ottime partenze e la buona velocità – ha commentato lo skipper d’Oltralpe – dal momento che l’equipaggio si è coordinato alla perfezione. Questi sono stati infatti gli elementi che ci hanno permesso di raggiungere la vetta della classifica provvisoria”.

In realtà i due catamarani protagonisti devono guardarsi anche da Oman Sail‘s Masirah di Pete Cumming, che si è confermato oggi un ottimo competitor, tagliando il traguardo per due volte davanti a tutti (è terzo con 69 punti).

I giochi restano dunque aperti in vista dell’ultima giornata di domani e, considerato lo splendido tempo che ha contraddistinto le regate odierne, i team potranno far conto su tutte le loro risorse strategiche, oltre che di semplice forza fisica. Il vento ha infatti tenuto sino alla fine, nonostante la delicata brezza d’inizio gara, al di sotto dei sette nodi, avesse spinto a posporre di diversi minuti l’inizio ufficiale delle regate.

L’alto tasso agonistico dei team si è rivelato anche dal numero di penalità segnalate, come accaduto nella seconda manche all’Oman Sail‘s Renaissance di Loick Peyron (ha toccato Ecover), oltre che dalle numerose false partenze all’inizio della terza. Sempre Renaissance ha fatto trattenere il fiato agli spettatori nell’ultima manche, quando il suo quinto uomo è scivolato in mare, venendo tratto in salvo da un gommone. La concitazione delle manovre in boa è spesso causa di collisioni e incroci pericolosi, tant’è che un’iridata olimpionica quale Shirley Robertson si è trovata in difficoltà pure oggi, chiudendo al penultimo posto col suo iShares (Ue).

“I percorsi sono molto stretti e corti – ha dichiarato la britannica – e spesso in boa c’è il caos: ho sentito tante urla, soprattutto in francese, ma al di là del giusto agonismo è stata una giornata perfetta e caratterizzata da una bella brezza. I punti chiave di questo circuito si confermano senza dubbio le partenze e i giri di boa, dal momento che richiedono manovre rapidissime. Proprio per questo, penso che Venezia sia una delle tappe più spettacolari dell’iShares Cup”.

CHANGES IN HIERARCY… BUT THE “BOSSES” MAKE IT CLEAR WHO THEY ARE
[iShares Press Release] Skies cleared up above the eternal city of Venice, and as cruise ships entered the busy waterways one could only be under the spell of the sophisticated, timeless and classical elegance of the town, its ability to remain true to itself regardless of the world around it. Set within sight of the Plaza San Marco, a few steps away from the Arsenal and the shipyards which allowed the Republic of Venice to establish itself as a genuine European power (read more below), the iShares Cup race village enjoyed a fantastic sunny morning, gearing up for the afternoon races.

The Committee had to postpone the first start but the wind eventually kicked in, and BMW Oracle Racing won the first race of the day just like they had done yesterday. Quite clearly, the American team, Gitana Extreme – Groupe LCF Rothschild, Renaissance and Masirah seemed to dominate and the mark roundings proved red hot, with a few contacts and subsequent penalties. Yann Guichard’s crew impressed with their speed, while Pete Cumming went on to win two races in a row… with Gitana Extreme – Groupe LCF Rothschild in his wake!

Loïck Peyron had mixed fortunes and a few imperfect starts, but showed a great ability to get back in the game – unfortunately, the crew’s 5th man had a taste of Venetian waters and had to be picked up by a safety rib! The “man overboard” seemed to have enjoyed his experience, coming ashore dripping but with a big smile on his face.
Peyron went on to win race 10, with BMW Oracle Racing in his wake and Holmatro posting a second third place of the day.

iShares had taken a good start – Shirley Robertson being on form today with a second and a third, but once more the first windward mark rounding was key, finding the opening was key… as were the starts, and the Race Committee had to perform two general recalls today! Moving into the lead after two days and 10 races, Yann Guichard confirmed his tactical inspiration and the crew impressed with their amazing boatspeed. This second day saw the heavyweights of the circuit come out on top quite clearly, and the leading quartet that emerged yesterday is still on top of the leaderboard today… with a special mention for Pete Cumming’s Masirah, cumulating 4 race wins.
