Extreme Sailing Series, Edmond de Rotschild avanti, ma The Wave è a un punto

Extreme Sailing Series – Trapani – Ben sei le regate disputate in condizioni meteo ideali con sole e vento tra gli 8 e i 10 nodi e mare piatto a largo della costa ovest di Trapani citta’ del sale e della vela. La classifica odierna vede al comando Gitana di Yann Guichard seguito da The Wawe (skipper Paul Campbell James) e al terzo Ecover Sailing Team del navigatore inglese Mike Golding.
Il team italiano Trapani The Sailing Seacily era all’esordio oggi sugli Extreme 40, i veloci catamarani di 12 metri interamente realizzati in carbonio. L’equipaggio composto da Alberto Sonino, timoniere, Gabriele Bruni, skipper Mario Noto trimmer e Giuspeppe Leonardi a prua, ha sempre regatato a stretto contatto con gli avversari, ma ha ovviamente pagato la mancanza di esperienza in questa classe, e occupa l’ultimo posto della classifica odierna.
Gabriele Bruni, intervistato al termine delle regate si e’ comunque dimostrato soddisfatto dell’ esperienza odierna: “Non potevamo ovviamente pensare di battere al primo colpo avversari che regatano su questa barche da anni. Non siamo arrivati sempre ultimi e questo e’ gia’ un primo risultato. Domani vedremo di migliorare sempre di più. Al di là del risultato c’e’ da dire che queste barche sono incredibili, oggi mi sono comunque divertito moltissimo”.
Il programma odierno prevedeva regate in acque aperte a largo della costa nord della città per i sette equipaggi, che, invece, tra meno di ventiquattro ore, cominceranno a sfidarsi in duelli serrati all’interno del porto antico di Trapani. Lo spettacolo vero per il pubblico comincera’ quindi alle 14 di domani, mentre oggi il divertimento e l’adrenalina erano riservati a tutti coloro che hanno vissuto l’esperienza unica di essere quinto uomo a bordo. Il regolamento, infatti, prevede che, oltre ai quattro membri dell’equipaggio, tutte le imbarcazioni abbiano a bordo un ospite o un giornalista.
Stefano Vegliani, inviato di Italia 1 a Trapani e ospite in una regata vittoriosa a bordo di Groupama 40, ha cosi commentato l’esperienza odierna: “Chi pensa che l’America’s Cup con i catamarani non sara’ divertente, sbaglia. Queste barche sono veloci anche con pochissimo vento e garantiscono uno spettacolo di altissimo livello anche per il pubblico”.
Anche Maurizio Pantaleo, marsalese, istruttore di kite surf è tornato entusiasta di questa esperienza: “Oggi ho realizzato un sogno. Essere a bordo al centro dell’azione è una sensazione indescrivibile. Ho partecipato a cinque regate cambiando equipaggio ogni volta. Sono barche adrenaliniche che lasciano emozioni molto forti. Le velocita’ sono impressionanti e la tensione ad ogni incrocio e’ palpabile”.

EXTREME SAILING SERIES, GUICHARD COMES OUT ON TOP AT THE END OF DAY 1
[Extreme Sailing Series Press Release] In 30 degrees and 8-10 knots of the breeze the Sicilian town of Trapani provided a stunning backdrop for the opening day of racing on the penultimate stopover in the Extreme Sailing Series 2010.
Groupe Edmond de Rothschild, skippered by Yann Guichard, fresh from their win in Kiel just three weeks ago, came out of the starting blocks with a bang, taking the first three bullets of the day, but The Wave, Muscat, is hot on the Frenchman’s heels, just one point behind after six races.
Seven teams are here in the Medieval town of Trapani, the fleet augmented by a local ‘wildcard’ entry from America’s Cup Strategist, Gabriele Bruni, with his team Trapani, the Sailing Seacily. “It was really great! We had three good races, then in the last three we finished last, but that’s part of the game. The most important thing is that we enjoyed ourselves on the water. The other teams are very well prepared, sometimes we were playing with them, but obviously generally a bit behind. It’s also fantastic to sail in Trapani, in front of the islands, with good breeze.”
Mike Golding’s Ecover Sailing Team, has seen some stunning performances over the past four months of racing and once again looks to be in a good position to challenge for the podium, but is threatened by the fastest man around the planet, Franck Cammas, just one point behind.
With six races completed on day one, there were four boats taking the top spot, Groupe Edmond de Rothschild with three wins, but Groupama 40, Red Bull Extreme Sailing each taking a win and The Wave, Muscat finishing the day with a first.
The Extreme Sailing Series Trapani continues tomorrow, Friday 24 September, with the seven teams racing right inside the harbour, in front of the public and VIP spectators, from 2pm. Our weather partner WetterWelt expects 11 to 14 knots of breeze, with potential gusts up to 20 – which given the tight situation on the leaderboard will undoubtedly make for hotly contested races.
