Extreme Sailing Series, Artemis pronto alla sfida

Muscat – Una settimana all’inizio della stagione Extreme Sailing Series 2011 e a Muscat la pressione comincia a salire. Tra i sicuri protagonisti del circuito ci saranno anche gi uomini di Artemis Racing che, guidati da Terry Hutchinson, sfrutteranno la lunga serie di regate per approfondire la conoscenza dei multiscafi in vista del passaggio sull’AC45, previsto per il mese di aprile. Il team di Torbjorn Tornqvist, infatti, è sfidante ufficiale della 34ma America’s Cup.

A fare il punto della situazione è lo stesso Hutchinson che, dall’Oman, racconta dell’ultima settimana di allenamenti: “Si tratta del terzo training camp organizzato dal nostro team ed è il più importante, perchè precede la prima tappa dell’Extreme Sailing Series, prevista a partire da domenica prossima. Il format di questa session prevede intense sedute di allenamento la mattina, seguite da regate di flotta il pomeriggio, disputate assieme agli altri team”.

“Nel corso del week end abbiamo sperimentato un possibile scenario da Coppa America e dato una controllata alle vele. Per scenario di Coppa intendiamo una regata articolata su un solo giro di un percorso che ha le layline poste a quattro minuti dalla linea di partenza. Abbiamo anche disputato una regata di flotta a ranghi completi. In acqua c’erano quattordici barche e devo ammettere che è stato molto divertente. Sembrava una regata del college, ma non è stato affatto facile partire bene e costruire la velocità rapidamente”.

EXTREME SAILING SERIES, ARTEMIS READY FOR THE NEW SEASON
[Artemis Racing Press Release] Artemis Racing has been training here in Oman for the last week. This is our third Extreme 40 training camp and precedes the first event of the Extreme Sailing Series, which starts this Sunday, 20 February.

The format of our programme includes intense morning sessions, followed by fleet racing in the afternoon with the other teams.

Over the weekend we ran through some America’s Cup scenarios and checked our race sails. The America’s Cup scenarios consisted of one lap races with four minutes to a lay-line beats. As much as anything, it was just to try to get a feel for what we are getting ourselves into. Later in the day we joined the fleet for more fleet racing. We had a practice regatta with the 12-14 teams and that was good fun.

The good thing about the fleet racing is that it is very much a college racing style format, which I really enjoy. There is lots of emphasis on getting away clean from the start and good boat handling.

Communications here in Oman are shockingly bad but I have managed to keep the telephone cord in the computer for the time being. Fingers crossed it keeps working. More to follow.
