CHALLENGE JULIUS BAER, LIGHT AIRS IN ROLLE SPELT NO RACING FOR THE GRAND PRIX DE ROMANDIE
[Source Alinghi] The second of the Challenge Julius Baer regattas, the GP de Romandie Act 1, was plagued with light airs this weekend in Rolle on Lake Geneva. Temperatures soared and the locals flocked to the lake shores for what was supposed to be a 12 boat spectacle of grand prix multihull racing.
It was not to be: on Saturday there was an early morning residual breeze but it quickly dissipated leaving the crews to wait ashore and the high performance multihulls to float languidly at their moorings. Today, Sunday, crews gathered early at the Yacht Club de Rolle (a quintessential family club complete with a lawn to lounge on) hoping to catch the morning breeze. It was not to be and the crews put the lawn to good use for most of the day. By 13.30 with temperatures peaking at almost 30 degrees and just a couple of hours to go before the 15.30 last start deadline a hesitant thermal wind rippled the glassy lake and the race committee sent the fleet out.
Sadly after one start and a general recall, the wind died again and that was that. No racing, which means the GP Romandie Act 1 will not count in the Challenge Julius Baer rankings. The next event of the series is on the 6 June for the Geneva, Rolle, Geneva sprint and then on 13 June for the world reknown Bol d’Or. Alinghi SUI-1 and SUI-6 will be competing in both events, so check back then for race reports and interviews with the crew!
