Rolex Capri Sailing Week, ultima chiamata

Rolex Capri Sailing Week – Capri – Anche Tiberio, l’imperatore romano che fece di Capri la sua dimora negli ultimi anni di vita, stamattina sarebbe rimasto sorpreso. Con una finestra di vento di circa due ore prevista nel tratto di mare tra l’isola e la terraferma, ci sono voluti straordinaria efficienza e nervi d’acciaio per collocare il campo di regata e consentire ai concorrenti di svolgere almeno una prova nella terza giornata della Rolex Capri Sailing Week.

Se la prima prova è stata un esempio di efficienza, la seconda prova è stata un esempio di pazienza: i regatanti hanno, infatti, dovuto attendere per quasi tre ore prima che la brezza da ovest entrasse e si stabilizzasse sul campo di gara. Alla vigilia della giornata conclusiva, i leader di ciascuna divisione sono: Mascalzone Latino; Atlantica Racing; Cuordileone; Fral 2; Athanor.

Per gli equipaggi prossimi ai leader di classe, domani ci sarà l’ultima opportunità per conquistare il gradino più alto del podio.

Questa settimana gli equipaggi sono stati fortunati nell’aver avuto Peter Reggio come responsabile dei percorsi di regata. Per la prima prova di oggi, Reggio ha deciso di sfruttare la leggera brezza da sud che copriva la zona proprio nel momento in cui il canale tra Capri e Sorrento riusciva a spremere dal vento un nodo o due in più. Un lavoro ben fatto, dato che la brezza ha chiuso definitivamente i battenti poco dopo l’arrivo dell’ultimo Comet. La prevista rotazione del vento a ovest è stata terribilmente lenta e Reggio ha atteso a lungo prima di dare la partenza della seconda prova.

I veri vincitori in tutto questo sono stati, ovviamente, i concorrenti. Nella prima prova hanno primeggiato Helmut Jahn e Flash Gordon nei Farr 40s, Nico Poons e Charisma negli Swan 45s, Enrico Scerni e Kora 4 negli Swan 42s, Alessandro Nespaga e Fral 2 nei Comet 45, Massimo Russo e Athanor nei Comet 41 – tutti vincitori in tempo reale nelle rispettive categorie. I protagonisti della seconda prova sono stati Barking Mad, Charisma, Cuordileone, Fral 2 e Athanor.

Entrambe le prove si sono svolte con vento instabile ed è stato fondamentale azzeccare la strategia ed evitare errori costosi e irreparabili. Flash Gordon come solito si è comportato bene nel primo test, conducendo la regata da inizio a fine. Un altro team americano, Goombay Smash, ha dimostrato tutto il suo potenziale, in anteprima del campionato mondiale Rolex Farr 40, piazzandosi secondo davanti a Calvi Network e Fiamma. Il parziale crollo di Mascalzone Latino a quinto in classifica è stato ampiamente compensato dal nono di TWT – risultato deludente per Marco Rodolfi, che aveva dominato Onorato nel primo lato del percorso.

Goombay Smash ha proseguito la giornata con un quarto piazzamento nella seconda prova, di cui l’armatore Doug Douglass è molto soddisfatto, nonostante aver ammesso di preferire venti più forti: “regatare qui è troppo impegnativo. Il vento è troppo leggero e instabile. Preferiamo venti più costanti. La cosa più importante in queste regate è partire liberi. In tutta la settimana le barche che hanno vinto la partenza sono state quelle che si sono piazzate meglio. Ciò nonostante Capri è un’isola bellissima, ieri siamo andati a fare il bagno alla Grotta Azzurra!”

Con la vittoria di Jim Richardson nella seconda prova e il sesto in classifica di Flash Gordon la giornata è andata molto bene per gli americani, mentre Vincenzo Onorato si deve accontentare del vantaggio di nove punti su Nerone, secondo in classifica.

Nella classe dei Comet 45 Class, Fral 2 ha spadroneggiato nelle condizioni leggere della prima prova sfrecciando lungo il percorso e accumulando un solido vantaggio sui rivali Libertine e One Noidinotte, che hanno concluso la regata rispettivamente secondo e terzo in reale e in compensato. L’attesa di tre ore non ha diminuito per nulla l’energia di Fral 2 nella seconda prova, in cui ha nuovamente dominato. One Noidinotte è scalata di un posto in classifica concludendo seconda, per la gioia dell’equipaggio. Lo skipper Felice Bifulco ha dichiarato: “per noi il secondo e terzo di oggi sono grandi risultati. Siamo molto soddisfatti della nostra barca e ovviamente anche dell’equipaggio. Dovete ricordare che questo è uno yacht da crociera ed è la prima volta che partecipiamo a una regata Rolex. L’organizzazione è eccellente sia in mare sia a terra. E’ davvero una bellissima manifestazione e lo spirito che anima la sfida è straordinario.”

Negli Swan 45, Charisma ha dominato la prima prova da inizio a fine conquistando un enorme vantaggio. Nulla di cui preoccuparsi per Carlo Perrone e Atlantica Racing che, grazie a un secondo in classifica, hanno incrementato il distacco dal gruppo dei rivali al loro inseguimento. Tuttavia nella seconda prova di giornata Perrone è riuscito a piazzarsi solo quarto e ora le prime quattro barche in classifica sono separate da soli tre punti. Grazie alla doppia vittoria, Charisma è ascesa a seconda nella classifica overall. Stando a Jesper Radich, tattico della barca olandese, la vittoria della prima prova è il risultato degli allenamenti svolti prima della regata: “la prova si è svolta nel canale e la decisione da prendere era se dirigersi verso le scogliere di sinistra o quelle di destre. Un lato sarebbe stato favorito. Dai nostri allenamenti avevamo imparato che con un vento di circa 175/180 gradi la destra avrebbe pagato. Siamo andati a destra e alla prima boa avevamo un vantaggio superiore a un minuto.”

Nella seconda prova Charisma ha superato Earlybird, che era stata al comando nelle fasi iniziali. Sia Radich sia l’armatore Nico Poons hanno attribuito il successo tanto all’equipaggio quanto alle corrette scelte tattiche. “Siamo arrivati secondi alla boa di bolina. Nella poppa ci siamo posizionati bene per il sorpasso grazie alle manovre dell’equipaggio e alla tattica. Questo è senza dubbio uno sport di squadra e tantissimo dipende dal lavoro del team,” ha commentato Poons, secondo il quale questa settimana è stata un ottimo allenamento in vista dei campionati mondiali di Swan 45 in programma quest’anno all’Argentario.

L’inizio di giornata per la classe Swan 42 è stato più serio rispetto a ieri. Enrico Scerni e Kora 4 si sono trovati sotto accusa da parte di Kuujjuaq per un episodio avvenuto nella prova di ieri. Alla fine, Kora 4 è stata squalificata. Colta nell’orgoglio, Kora 4 oggi ha sferrato la rivincita vincendo agevolmente la prima prova. Nella seconda regata Kora 4 si è piazzata seconda dietro a Leonardo Ferragamo e accede alla giornata conclusiva a un solo punto di svantaggio dal leader.

Nei Comet 41, Athanor ha sfoggiato nuovamente la sua velocità e abilità di manovra dominando in entrambe le prove. Athanor conduce la classifica con un vantaggio di nove punti e solo una catastrofe le strapperà la vittoria di domani.

Date le previsioni meteo, simili a quelle di oggi, gli equipaggi in pole position sono sicuramente felici, ma dati i ridotti margini non ci si può certo rilassare.

La Capri Sailing Week 2009 si conclude domani, sabato, con il primo segnale previsto alle 12.00 CEST. Il tempo limite delle partenze è fissato alle 14.00.

ROLEX CAPRI SAILING WEEK, JUST ONE MORE CHANCE
[Regattanews Press Release] Even Tiberius, the Roman Emperor who made Capri his home for the final years of his life would have been impressed this morning. With a window of wind opportunity reckoned to last about two hours in the sea-strait between the island and the mainland, it needed ruthless efficiency and nerves of steel to set a course and get the crews off for at least one race on the third day of Rolex Capri Sailing Week.

If race one was an example in efficiency, race two was an example in patience, with competitors kept waiting for the best part of three hours whilst a westerly breeze filled in across the course area and established itself. Heading into the final day, yachts holding the trump card in each division are: Mascalzone Latino; Atlantica Racing; Cuordileone; Fral 2 and Athanor.

For those still in touch with their class leader, tomorrow represents one last opportunity to stake their claim for top spot on the podium.

The crews have been lucky to have Peter Reggio marshalling the racecourse this week. For the first race of the day, Reggio decided to take advantage of the light southerly breeze covering the region at a point where the channel between Capri and Sorrento was squeezing an extra knot or two out of the wind. Good job too, as the shop shut-up completely shortly after the last of the Comets had cleared the finish line and the anticipated rotation to the west took an age to create enough confidence in Reggio to start race two.

The real winners in all this were, of course, the competitors, none more so in the first race than Helmut Jahn and Flash Gordon in the Farr 40s, Nico Poons and Charisma in the Swan 45s, Enrico Scerni and Kora 4 in the Swan 42s, Alessandro Nespaga and Fral 2 in Comet 45s, and, Massimo Russo and Athanor in Comet 41s – all of whom took the gun in their divisions. In race two, the winners were Barking Mad, Charisma, Cuordileone, Fral 2 and Athanor.

Both races were conducted in a shifting breeze; committing to a correct strategy was all-important as mistakes would be costly and irrecoverable. Flash Gordon had its now traditional good result in the first test, leading from start to finish. A second American team, Goombay Smash, also showed her potential before the Rolex Farr 40 Worlds by taking second, ahead of Calvi Network and Fiamma. Mascalzone Latino‘s relative slump to fifth was more than compensated by TWT‘s eventual ninth – a disappointing showing for Marco Rodolfi having got the better of Onorato on the first leg.

Goombay Smash followed up one good result with another finishing her second race in fourth, which delighted owner Doug Douglass, who has found the racing here difficult at the best of times, openly admitting to preferring heavier conditions, “the racing here is too challenging. Too light and too shifty. We like better breeze. The most important part of the race is to get off the starting line clean. All week those who have won the start have done better. But Capri is a beautiful island, we went to the Grotto Azzurra yesterday for a nice swim!”

With Jim Richardson winning the second of the two races and Flash Gordon posting a sixth it was good day for the American teams, but Vincenzo Onorato will be best satisfied holding a 9-point lead over second-placed Nerone.

In the Comet 45 Class, Fral 2 took total control of the light conditions in race one and stormed around the course, building an impregnable lead over rivals Libertine and One Noidinotte, which finished second and third on the water and handicap respectively. The three-hour wait for the second race did nothing to reduce Fral 2′s effectiveness in the second race, where she won again. One Noidinotte improved by one place to finish second, leaving a very happy crew, according to skipper, Felice Bifulco, “for us a second and a third today are great results. We are very happy about our boat and of course about the crew. You have to remember that this is a cruising yacht and it’s the first time we are participating at a Rolex sailing event. The organisation is impressive on the water as well as onshore. It’s really a great event, especially the spirit of the challenge.”

In the Swan 45s, Charisma led race one from start to finish building a massive lead in the process. This will not have troubled Carlo Perrone and Atlantica Racing too much as their second place created further separation between themselves and the immediate chasing pack. However, in the second race Perrone could only finish fourth, which has closed up the standings with the top four now separated by three points; Charisma‘s double bullet moving them into second overall. Jesper Radich, tactician on the Dutch boat, put the walkaway win in the first race down to their pre-event practice, “the race was in the strait and the decision was between taking the left-hand cliffs or the right-hand cliffs. One side was going to pay. We learnt from our practice sessions that with the wind around 175/180 degrees the right would pay. We went right and were leading by more than a minute at the first mark.”

The second race required Charisma to overtake Earlybird, which had led in the early stages. Both Radich and owner, Nico Poons, put their success down to the crew as much as good tactics. “We were second rounding the windward mark. Downwind we put ourselves in a good position to overtake because of crew-work and tactics. It is absolutely a team sport and so much about teamwork,” remarked Poons, who believes the week has been excellent practice for the Swan 45 Class world championship scheduled for Argentario later this year.

The Swan 42 class started the day more tightly poised than immediately after racing yesterday. Enrico Scerni and Kora 4 were the wrong side of a protest by Kuujjuaq arising from an incident in yesterday’s race. Kora 4 ended up disqualified from the single contest. As if stung by this Kora 4 took the sword to her opposition today winning race one comfortably. In race two Kora 4 was second behind Leonardo Ferragamo and crew, and goes into the final day one point off the pace.

In the Comet 41s, Athanor again showed her superior speed and boat handling by leading the remainder of the fleet a right merry dance in both races. She leads by nine-points and only an implosion will deny her tomorrow.

With similar wind conditions as today predicted for tomorrow, those in pole position will be happiest, but with some leading by only a point they are by no means feeling secure.

Racing at Capri Sailing Week 2009 ends tomorrow, Saturday, with the first gun scheduled for 12.00 CEST. No races will be started after 14.00.
