Rolex Capri Sailing Week, Mascalzone Latino si conferma

Rolex Capri Sailing Week – Capri – Ci sono pochi posti al mondo da cui osservare una regata velica più belli di Villa Jovis sulla punta orientale di Capri. Indubbiamente è da parecchio tempo che il suo proprietario se n’è andato e lo stato della villa non è dei migliori. Tutto sommato, forse, è meglio così, considerando che l’Imperatore Tiberio era solito disfarsi degli ospiti indesiderati gettandoli dall’alto della scogliera nelle turchesi acque sottostanti. Oggi, nella seconda giornata della Rolex Capri Sailing Week 2009, anche sul campo di regata ci sono state delle sbrigative rese di conti.

Peter Reggio, Principal Race Officer della manifestazione, ha tenuto la flotta agli ormeggi per due ore in attesa della brezza. Le regate hanno preso il via alle 1400 con un vento di 6-7 nodi. I Farr 40 hanno disputato due prove, i cui protagonisti sono stati rispettivamente TWT (ITA) e Mascalzone Latino (ITA). Nelle classifiche di fine giornata, Mascalzone detiene un punto di vantaggio su TWT. Le altre flotte in gara hanno completato una sola prova. I leader delle rispettive classifiche, al termine della seconda giornata, sono: Atlantica Racing (ITA), che dopo la vittoria odierna detiene un vantaggio di due punti; Kora 4 (ITA) conserva ancora il comando negli Swan 42, ma con un vantaggio ridotto a soli due punti dopo un insolito errore; nei Comet 41 Athanor (ITA) ha dominato nuovamente e possiede un solido vantaggio di cinque punti; nei Comet 45 Fral 2 (ITA) si è piazzata seconda nella prova di giornata ed è in testa con un punto di vantaggio.

Nella prima prova dei Farr 40, TWT è partito bene, ha scelto il lato giusto del percorso e ha girato la prima boa con un lieve vantaggio sul gruppo all’inseguimento. Lo spettacolo della flotta sotto spinnaker vista dall’alto dell’isola assomigliava a un’imminente battaglia navale. I Farr 40, condotti da TWT, hanno tagliato in due la flotta dei Comet impegnati nella loro prima bolina. Questa manovra, apparentemente ben ordinata, s’e improvvisamente interrotta a metà lato quando le barche dietro a Rodolfi si sono dirette verso le direzioni opposte del campo in cerca di migliori canali d’aria. Poco prima del cancello di sottovento, TWT ha infilato due veloci strambate, come per sistemarsi meglio in sella, allineandosi perfettamente sul lato destro del cancello.

In quell’istante, le barche che si erano dirette a sinistra parevano aver guadagnato un leggero vantaggio su TWT, e almeno due parevano aver girato il cancello davanti. Quest’impressione non è durata a lungo. Non appena TWT ha virato verso il centro del campo, infatti, si è visto subito che era ancora in vantaggio e che il suo margine si era consolidato nel lato di bolina accorciato. Di poppa nessuno ha minacciato la sua leadership e TWT ha tagliato il traguardo in tutta tranquillità davanti a Calvi Network (ITA) di Carlo Alberini. Flash Gordon (USA) di Helmut Jahn, con Bill Hardesty alla tattica, si è piazzato quarto. Ieri l’equipaggio americano ha faticato a mantenere la concentrazione ottenendo un quarto e un decimo piazzamento. Nonostante un brillante inizio di giornata, la seconda prova di oggi è stata nuovamente deludente, con un dodicesimo in classifica.

Hardesty ha dichiarato: “oggi la prima regata è sembrata andar bene di nuovo. Ieri ci siamo piazzati quarti nella prima prova ma abbiamo regatato male nella seconda, e oggi abbiamo fatto lo stesso. Sta tutto nel tagliare liberi la linea di partenza. E’ un percorso a senso unico e se non parti bene finisci dalla parte sbagliata, non hai altra scelta e a quel punto è difficile recuperare.”

Tutti gli equipaggi della flotta di Farr 40 hanno gli occhi fermamente puntati sui campionati mondiali Rolex Farr 40 in programma a fine giugno e cercano di essere positivi anche quando i risultati non sono dalla loro parte. Hardesty ha aggiunto: “in linea generale siamo soddisfatti di come stanno andando le cose. Siamo con lo stesso team da tre. quattro anni, quando le cose si fanno strette in genere siamo capaci di gestire bene la barca. Helmut (Jahn) sta timonando bene e l’equipaggio sta facendo un ottimo lavoro. Stiamo cercando di capire i nostri limiti e imparare a partire di nuovo. Stiamo sperimentando un po’ e in certe circostanze siamo un po’ più aggressivi del solito; questo forse è parte del problema, ma è solo così che si impara.”

Le regate di Farr 40 sono sempre molto ravvicinate, soprattutto poco prima dei mondiali. Non c’è margine d’errore e, come ha scoperto ieri TWT, se sbagli è difficile recuperare. Nella prima regata di oggi Mascalzone è inciampato leggermente finendo sesto, ma la situazione si è subito normalizzata con la vittoria della seconda prova. La battaglia tra Vincenzo Onorato e TWT è ben lontana dall’essere conclusa. La giornata è andata bene anche per Calvi Network e Carlo Alberini, che ha ottenuto un terzo in classifica nella seconda prova: “è stata una bella giornata, molto costante. Siamo riusciti a ottimizzare la velocità della barca ottenendo risultati immediati, quindi ci sentiamo molto competitivi e speriamo di finire nel gruppo di testa insieme a Mascalzone Latino e TWT. ” Il segreto del successo di Alberini sta nell’equipaggio: ” manteniamo sempre il buon umore, anche quando ci troviamo in difficoltà. Scherziamo. Cerchiamo di essere concentrati, allegri e desiderosi di vincere. Questo è un ottimo allenamento per gli imminenti mondiali di giugno a Porto Cervo. Sappiamo che non ci saranno sempre 40 nodi di Maestrale, quindi regatare in aria leggera è un ottimo esercizio.”

Fral 2 e Athanor hanno mantenuto la costanza dei risultati nella classe dei Comet e lo stesso vale per gli Swan 45, quindi l’unica sorpresa della giornata è stata quella di Kora 4, che si è piazzata seconda dietro a Cuordileone negli Swan 42. Enrico Scerni e il suo equipaggio hanno spianato la strada a Leonardo Ferragamo con una partenza anticipata. Ma rimanere in testa alla flotta in condizioni di vento instabile non è così facile, come ha subito annotato Chieffi: “abbiamo eseguito la miglior partenza della settimana ed è stata anche la migliore partenza della flotta. Volevamo andare a sinistra e abbiamo puntato su quell’estremo della linea. Le altre due barche di testa sono partite in anticipo quindi ci siamo potuti concentrare esclusivamente sulla velocità. Ma non è stato facile; siamo partiti con quasi dieci nodi di vento, poi l’aria è calata a meno di sei nodi con grossi buchi.”

A metà evento una barca soltanto si trova saldamente al comando – se un vantaggio di cinque punti può essere definito così. Ci sono ancora parecchie prove in programma e, anche se sarà impossibile trovare un altro palazzo della Roma imperiale come punto d’osservazione, domani sarà senz’altro un’altra magnifica giornata per gli equipaggi e gli spettatori.

Le regate della Rolex Capri Sailing Week 2009 proseguiranno domani, venerdì, con il primo segnale previsto alle 12.00 CEST.

ROLEX CAPRI SAILING WEEK, LOOKING ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
[Regattanews Press Release] There may be few better places in the world to watch yacht racing, than from the Villa Jovis on the eastern point of Capri. Admittedly, it is some time since its owner moved out and the villa is in disrepair but, given Emperor Tiberius’ reputation for summarily dispatching unwanted guests from the cliff top into the cobalt waters below, it may be for the best. There was some summary dispatching on the racecourse too as Rolex Capri Sailing Week 2009 moved into its second day.

Peter Reggio, the principal race officer, kept the fleet ashore for two hours to allow a westerly breeze to fill in. Racing eventually got underway at 14.00, with the wind blowing at around 6/7 knots. The Farr 40s got in two races, and the executioners were TWT in the first and Mascalzone Latino in the second. Mascalzone leads TWT by one point overnight. The remaining fleets raced only once and top-trumps heading into day three are Atlantica Racing, which has a two-point lead following its bullet; Kora 4 still leads the Swan 42s, with a reduced margin of two-points after a uncharacteristic slip; in the Comet 41 class Athanor continued her winning ways and holds a five-point cushion, and, in the Comet 45s Fral 2 came second and leads by one-point.

In the first race for the Farr 40s, TWT got a good start chose the correct side of the race-track and rounded the windward mark with a slender lead over the chasing pack. Watching the fleet head downwind from on high, one had the impression of a naval action about to commence. The Farr 40s, line astern with the spinnakers flying and led by TWT, carved straight through the middle of the Comet fleet as it headed up wind. The seemingly disciplined manoeuvre came to an abrupt end halfway down the leg as those behind Rodolfi peeled off in search of better lanes of wind. Just before the leeward gate, TWT stuck in two quick gybes as though shifting position on an uncomfortable saddle, the reason for which became apparent as they lined themselves up perfectly on the starboard side of the gate.

In that moment, those heading for the port hand mark looked to have achieved an advantage over TWT, at least two appearing to rounding before her. This impression was short-lived. As TWT tacked back towards the centre of the course she had a clear lead again and extended even over the shortened upwind leg. Downwind no one threatened her lead and she cruised over the line ahead of Carlo Alberini and Calvi Network. In fourth place came Helmut Jahn and Flash Gordon, with Bill Hardesty calling tactics. The American crew struggled for consistency yesterday with a 4, 10 scoreline. And, despite this bright start to the day the second race today also brought more disappointment, with a twelfth place.

Hardesty explained the predicament, “we seemed to have a good first race again. Yesterday we had a fourth in the first and a bad race in the second one, and we followed suit today as well. It has a bit to do with getting off the start line clean. It’s a fairly one-sided racetrack, so if you do not get a good start you end up going the wrong way because you have no choice and it is tough to climb back”

All crews in the Farr 40 fleet have their eyes on the Rolex Farr 40 Worlds scheduled for the end of June, and are looking for the positives even when the results make that difficult, as Hardesty continues, ” we’re generally pleased with the way things are going. We’ve had the same team for three.four years, so when things get tight we’re usually able to boat handle quite well. Helmut (Jahn) is driving well, on top of the crew doing well. We’re learning how to start the boat again, learning our limitations. We are experimenting and being a little bit more aggressive at times, which might be a problem, but that is how you learn.”

Farr 40 racing is always tight and no more so than in the lead-up to the world championship. There is little room for error, and as TWT discovered yesterday if you do get it wrong it is hard to recover. Mascalzone had a hiccough today in the first race finishing sixth. And, whilst normal service was resumed with a first place in the second race by Vincenzo Onorato, with TWT avoiding copying Flash Gordon by getting it right in the first and second, this contest is far from over. Calvi Network and Carlo Alberini were another to have a good day, scoring a third in the second race “it was very nice, very consistent. We were able to optimize the boat speed with an immediate result, so we feel competitive, eager to finish in the top group together with Mascalzone Latino and TWT.”

Alberini’s secret to success is the crew, “we keep the humour, also in moments we are struggling on the race course. We still make jokes. We try to stay concentrated, light-hearted, still eager to win. This is a very good training for the forthcoming Worlds in June in Porto Cervo. We know that there will not always be 40 knots of Mistral, which means sailing in light winds is really practicing.”

With Fral 2 and Athanor maintaining their progress with good results in the Comet classes, and Atlantica Racing doing the same in the Swan 45s, the one surprise of the day was Kora 4 finishing second behind Cuordileone in the Swan 42s. Enrico Scerni and crew made it easy for Leonardo Ferragamo by starting too early. But leading from the front in shifty winds is not so straightforward as Chieffi was quick to point out,”we had the best start of the week so far and we actually had the best start of the fleet. We wanted to go left and went for the pin end of the line. The other two top boats in our class had a premature start, so we were able to concentrate on going fast. It was tricky though, we started with almost ten knots and it dropped many times below six, with big holes of no air.”

So, halfway through the regatta and only one boat looking comfortable – if a five-point lead could be described as such. Plenty of racing to come, and if it proves impossible to find another first century Roman imperial palace from which to view proceedings tomorrow is certain to be another enjoyable day for crews and spectators.

Racing at Rolex Capri Sailing Week 2009 continues tomorrow, Friday, with the first gun scheduled for 12.00 CEST.
