Malcesine RC44 Cup – Malcesine – L’ultima giornata di regate della Malcesine Cup, terza tappa delle sei totali del Circuito Mondiale della classe monotipo RC44, ha sfruttato tutto il vento possibile che l’alto Garda ha riservato per questa domenica. Si è regatato infatti sia il mattino con il vento da nord (tre regate) che il pomeriggio (1 prova) con il vento da sud.
I dieci team impegnati da martedì scorso alla Fraglia Vela Malcesine sono scesi in acqua molto presto per disputare le prime regate con il Pelèr (vento da nord): alle 8.30 il Comitato di regata ha iniziato le procedure di partenza della prima prova e si è riusciti a proseguire fino a tarda mattinata con tre regate di flotta totali. Una serie di prove molto appassionanti che si sono svolte con campo di regata tra Capo Reamol e il confine tra Veneto e Trentino. Anche oggi lo spettacolo non è mancato, soprattutto dal punto di vista agonistico, dato che le caratteristiche delle barche hanno dimostrato la bellezza e la combattività offerta dalla monotipia, (tutte le barche sono uguali).
Team Aqua, nonostante un problema alla drizza della randa nella prima prova, ha infilato successivamente due vittorie, sufficienti per portarlo al comando – ad una regata dalla fine – con 2 punti di vantaggio su Artemis, secondo. Ma l’ultima prova (quarta di giornata) disputata poco prima delle ore 15.00 si è rivelata decisiva. Dean Barker, tattico della svedese Artemis, non ha deluso le aspettative e ha letteralmente dominato la regata andando a vincere davanti ad un bravissimo Sea Dubai. Aqua, nonostante un deludente nono posto dell’ultima regata, è riuscita comunque a conquistare il secondo gradino del podio sia nella classifica di flotta che overall (la somma tra match race e regate di flotta), davanti a BMW Oracle Racing team, terzo con 3 punti di distacco.
“Sono molto contento di aver concluso nel migliori dei modi questo evento assai importante per Malcesine e il lago di Garda – ha dichiarato il presidente della Fraglia Vela Malcesine Gianni Testa – Anche quest’anno gli enti locali hanno creduto nella potenzialità di una manifestazione velica di questo livello e, grazie alla collaborazione di tutte le persone vicine alla Fraglia Vela Malcesine, siamo riusciti a realizzare con molto entusiasmo questa terza tappa del Circuito Mondiale RC44. Mi fa anche piacere che l’ultima regata di oggi ha permesso all’esordiente team Jelik di Honk Kong di riscattarsi e di conquistare finalmente un ottimo quinto posto parziale, dopo tanti ultimi posti: gli amici cinesi si sono presi una piccola soddisfazione che sicuramente gli darà quella carica necessaria per proseguire a regatare in questa impegnativa classe e raggiungere il livello tecnico degli altri team che regatano in questo Circuito da più anni. Sono orgoglioso che la loro prima regata RC44 sia stata fatta proprio qui a Malcesine”.

TORBJORN TORNQVIST AND ARTEMIS FANTSTIC WINNER OF THE MALCESINE RC44 CUP
[RC44 Championship Tour Press Release] Everyone knew this morning – as the teams were getting ready on the pontoons – that this last day would be a tough one. Indeed, four teams were merely separated by seven points ahead of race 6 and everything remained possible with four more regattas to complete.
Quite unfortunate at times earlier in the week, Torbjorn Tornqvist, Dean Barker and their team on board Artemis started the first race in the middle of the line whilst the provisional leader Team Aqua chose the pin. The racing was very close until Aqua’s runner clip suddenly broke. The loose runner slashed Chris Bake in the back and put an end to their hope of winning this regatta despite the team’s bowman Matt Cassidy climbing up the mast in no time to secure the rig. Unable to hoist a spinnaker, the Aqua boys had no other options than to see Artemis sail away, win the race and take the provisional lead of the event. Team Sea Dubai finished second, proving once again how much progress they have made since the beginning of the year.
Chris Bake later on described the incident as an “adrenaline rush”. It certainly made a strong effect on the team, who won the next two regattas. The top three boats of Race seven (Aqua, BMW Oracle Racing and Ceeref) crossed the arrival line within two seconds whilst Artemis and Team Sea Dubai were separated by half a boat length in fourth and fifth!
The eighth race – the last before lunch break and the final race – turned into a spectacular Aqua show, the team from the UAE winning the regatta with a massive lead over Ceeref and Artemis. At this stage and ahead of the last race, Team Aqua had a 2 points advantage over Artemis and seven over BMW Oracle Racing with No Way Back one point behind. Everything remained possible!
Both Artemis and Team Aqua took good starts, with a little advantage to Artemis. As soon as the opportunity arose, Tornqvist tacked on top of Aqua, forcing the latter to head back to the shore. This was the (premature) end of the regatta, which turned out to be a procession. After winning the match race event on Thursday, Artemis conquers the fleet regatta and the overall Malcesine Cup. Team Aqua finishes second of both the fleet regatta and the overall ranking, whilst BMW Oracle Racing completes the podium.
The next regatta will take place on September 30 – October 4 in Portoroz (Slovenia).
