Malta – In its tensest conclusion ever, the RC44 Match Racing Championship today came down to the very last race of the very last flight, victory ultimately falling the way of Torbjörn Törnqvist’s Artemis Racing.
Match racing at the RC44 Valletta Cup was special, taking place in the magnificent setting of the Maltese capital’s Grand Harbour, surrounded by the ancient fortified city’s towering ramparts.
As usual at RC44 events, the RC44 Valletta Cup began with a day of match racing, the points from these five days of match racing accumulating across the season.
The match racing couldn’t have been tighter today with Artemis Racing and Team Nika still tied on points going into the final race.
However the Swedish team, on which experienced Italian match racer Francesco Bruni was helming today, fought back. With Team Nika slow to respond to a leebow tack, Artemis Racing regained the lead at the second top mark rounding and successfully defended their position to the finish line, to take the 2016 RC44 Match Racing Championship title.
With Team Nika second overall, an outstanding day for Team Aqua – joint top scorer today with Artemis Racing – allowed Chris Bake’s team to claim the third spot on the 2016 RC44 Match Racing Championship podium.
Tomorrow, the first of four days of fleet racing begins at the RC44 Valletta Cup.
