Flensburg – The Gazprom Swan 60 class heads to Flensburg Germany this week gearing up for the 2015 Nord Stream Race start. New to the entry list for 2015 Juan Calvo Boronat heads up the Spanish entry providing a different dynamic to the 4th edition of this annual offshore race to Saint Petersburg, Russia.
The team from Real Club Náutico Valencia will be competing on board Swan 60, Petite Flamme. The Spanish sailors face a demanding race course across 800nm, the whole distance of the Baltic Sea, unfamiliar territory for this European entry. Not only will the team be contending with cold seas and dark nights afloat, they are also lining up at the start against experienced veterans of this annual event.
Defending champion of the Nord Stream Race, Bronenosec from Saint Petersburg, Russia will again be skippered by Igor Frolov. As current Gazprom Swan 60 World Champion, Igor Frolov will offer a serious challenge to the Valencia based team. German yachting legend Tim Kröger skippering Spirit of Europe will also be a tough opponent. Tim’s lengthy experience in the Gazprom Swan 60 class since it was initiated in 2012 confirms this entry will be in the front pack of the fleet.
The Spanish must also factor in Joachim Brünner also from Germany racing Swan 60, SGM and the Gazprom Youth Sailing Challenge who are always a risk to overall points. This youth Russian entry is overseen by tactician, Sergey Borodinov. The Russian sailing legend is carefully crafting the sailing careers of selected young sailing stars on the Gazprom Swan 60 class circuit inviting new blood every year.
Racing will start at 12:00 on September 20th from Flensburg Germany, with finishes into Saint Petersburg, Russia predicted from the 23-25th September.
