[singlepic=1912,250,170,,left]Acura Miami Grand Prix – Miami – Settimo in classifica generale al termine dell’Acura Miami Grand Prix, dove a vincere è stato Bliksem, in testa sin dalle battute iniziali, Calvi Network ha chiuso al terzo posto il Trofeo Grand Prix Acura, la cui graduatoria somma i punteggi ottenuti nelle tre regate americane sponsorizzate dalla casa automobilistica giapponese.
Il Melges 32 di Carlo Alberini ha infatti partecipato alla Golden Cup lo scorso dicembre a Fort Lauderdale arrivando quarto, alla settimana di Key West lo scorso gennaio arrivando decimo e qui a Miami.
Davanti a Calvi Network, nella classifica Grand Prix, si sono piazzati l’americano New Wave e l’inglese Red che nelle difficili acque della Florida hanno saputo condurre meglio le loro imbarcazioni.
Come si diceva in apertura, è stata una settimana di regate letteralmente dominata da Peter Taselaar su Blicksem che il primo giorno ha stupito tutti con ben tre successi consecutivi.
Come sempre molto combattivo il veterano della vela John Kilroy su Samba Pa Ti e fa molto bene anche Q di Jim Swartz che nel primo giorno, tra la seconda e la terza regata, ha subito una collisione con una barca dell’organizzazione ed è dovuto rientrare per delle riparazioni urgenti.
Molto combattuta per tutta la settimana la terza posizione nel trofeo Acura tra Calvi Network, Argo, Leenabarca e Ninkasi, ma alla fine l’ha spuntata Calvi Network proprio all’ultima giornata.
“Abbiamo un equipaggio molto forte, nelle andature di poppa siamo davvero veloci e spesso, proprio alle portanti, abbiamo recuperato molte posizioni – spiega Carlo Alberini – Purtroppo quando c’e’ questo mare, che gli americani definiscono choppy, cioe con piccole onde acuminate, come timoniere faccio fatica a trovare la giusta conduzione. Sono però contento della barca e dell’equipaggio e sono sicuro che la stagione 2009 in Italia sarà molto divertente e competitiva”.
Rammaricato anche il tattico Gabriele Benussi: “Anche oggi abbiamo avuto i soliti problemi di velocità. Abbiamo provato diverse centrature, ma non abbiamo risolto, specie quando si formavano i piccoli treni di onde. In Italia raramente troveremo queste condizioni tranne che sul lago. Oggi abbiamo fatto due risultati, un settimo e un decimo, che sono stati ottenuti sempre in rimonta, sempre recuperando due brutte boline in cui siamo passati quasi ultimi. Resta un po’ di rammarico perché bastava poco davvero e avremmo potuto tranquillamente chiudere nei primi cinque posti della classifica. L’equipaggio ha lavorato molto bene, ma dobbiamo ancora migliorare perché la stagione al circuito europeo non sarà certamente semplice.”
Lorenzo Bodini, che ha partecipato a tutte e tre le prove che hanno concorso alla classifica del Trofeo Acura, è soddisfatto del terzo posto, ma ammette che c’è sempre da migliorare: “Siamo sempre a pochi passi dal podio che ci è sempre sfuggito per pochissimo.”
Calvi Network rientrerà nei prossimi giorni e sarà poi impegnata nel circuito europeo Audi, per concludere con il mondiale alla fine di settembre in Costa Smeralda.
TASELAAR DELIVERS AN AUSTONDING PERFORMANCE TO WIN 2009 ACURA MIAMI GRAND PRIX
[Melges 32 Press Release] Pieter Taselaar (New York, NY) on USA-169 Bliksem with the help of tactician extraordinary Jeremy Wilmot, crew members Paul Atkins, Michael Coxon, Willem Van Waay, Alex Clegg, Nathan Wilmot and bowman George Peet delivered an impressive performance to take the title of 2009 Acura Melges 32 Miami Grand Prix Champion! In second overall, is John Kilroy (San Francisco, Calif.) on USA-188 Samba Pa Ti. In third was Joe Woods on GBR-700 Red.
Despite the fact that Taselaar had a lead that could not necessarily be broken, it was Kilroy that perhaps had the only reasonable hope of breaking their winning spirit. That hope was crushed at the start of race one of the day when Kilroy was called over early, alongside of some others major players like Woods and Jason Carroll (New York, N.Y.) on USA-128 Argo. Upwind Kip Meadows (Rocky Mount, N.C.) on USA-77 RoXanne and Geoff Pierini (Perth Amboy, N.J.) on USA-178 Shakedown stuck it out on the right, putting them in control of the fleet at the first weathermark rounding. Meadows took a hold of the lead and never let go. That was, until he crossed the finish line in first, Pierini took second and in third Marty Kullman and Mike Carroll on (Tampa, Fla.) on USA-131 New Wave in third.
The second race of the day found Kilroy struggling for the lead coming hot into the weathermark, right behind Jim Swartz (Edgartown, Mass.) on USA-007 Q in first. Ryan DeVos (Holland, Mich.) on USA-180 Alpha One rounded in third. Swartz made a winning sweep of the race, taking his lead from start to finish. Kilroy on the other hand continuously held off the likes of Peter Rogers (Lymington, UK) on GBR-121 Highlife, Alex Jackson (Riverside, Conn.) on USA-174 Leenabarca and Devos for second place. The move of the race goes to Taselaar who was considerably deep in the fleet came in from the right to take a surprising third behind Kilroy finishing in second. Meadows, also in from the right took fourth and Rogers took fifth.
A grand awards ceremony was held just after four o’clock in the afternoon where Taselaar accepted top honors in the Melges 32 fleet.
The successful partnership of Kullman and Carroll on New Wave are double, back-to-back Acura Grand Prix Winners! Congratulations to the legendary Kullman/Carroll team who had a trivial week in Miami finishing fifth overall, won the Gold Cup back in December and scored fourth in Key West enabling them to retain the coveted title.
