Laser SB3 World Championship – Torbole – Terza giornata del Volvo Laser SB3 World Championship di Torbole, ancora sole e tanto vento, la solita Ora sui 15-18 nodi, attenuatasi solo nella terza e ultima prova della giornata su entrambi i campi di regata dove le flotte hanno iniziato la fase finale del campionato, divise in Gold e Silver.
Dopo nove regate la classifica è sempre guidata dai campioni in carica inglesi Craig Burlton, Adam Heeley e Steve White (3-3-1-7-3-2-26-2-2) con 23 punti, tallonati dal team con bandiera russa timoniere ucraino Luka Rodion (medaglia d’argento 49er ad Atene 2004), e i prodieri Oleg Zsherebtsov e Alexander Lebedev (6-2-2-8-2-1-21-3-1) staccati di soli 2 punti, a quota 25. Al terzo posto gli altri inglesi Jerry Hill, Joe Liewellyn e Grant Rollers (3-5-1-4-1-11-1-1-27) con 27 punti. Tre equipaggi in 4 punti.
Si avvicina al podio e sale al quarto posto l’equipaggio azzurro di Phi!Number con Luca Bacci, Tiziano Nava e Duccio Colombi (Canottieri Domaso) (1-4-8-6-9-5-2-10-4) a 39 punti, che precede al quinto la prima skipper donna, l’inglese Sarah Allan, con David Giles e Josie Gibson, a 44 punti. Scende al sesto posto il sudafricano Ian Ainslie (ex di Coppa America con Shosholoza) con Roger Hudson e Adam Martin, a 55 punti.
Sempre nella flotta Gold, si confermano al sedicesimo posto gli altri italiani di Stenghele con Roberto Caresani, Pietro Negri e Luigi Ravioli (Alto Lario) (7-16-11-15-9-1-12-19-19).
Nella flotta Silver squilli di rabbia per l’equipaggio di Vincenzo Graciotti, Camillo Zucconi e Jacopo Pasini (YC Riviera del Conero), che ieri avevano mancato la promozione alla flotta Gold che avrebbero meritato. Due primi e un quinto di manche li proietta in testa alla classifica della flotta “di consolazione”. Qui ci sono altri due equipaggi italiani nei primi sei posti: al quarto Andrea Pardini, Francesco Gregg e Cristian Raffaelli (CN Livorno) e al sesto Uberto Crivelli Visconti, Alessandra Angelini e Igino Angelini.
Sentito in banchina
Luka Rodion, medaglia d’argento classe 49er Olimpiadi di Atene 2004: “Non mi aspettavo di combattere per il titolo, è il mio primo mondiale su questa classe, il Laser SB3 è una classe competitiva e molto tattica, le regate con tante barche vicine e con il vento fresco del Garda sono una continua emozione. Prevedo un grande futuro per questa classe. Quanto al 49er: una campagna olimpica è dura e costosa, richiede impegno e dedizione continui. Trovo che ogni tanto sia giusto prendersi una pausa di riflessione. A febbraio con la nostra federazione decideremo se riprendere la preparazione per Londra 2012”.
Tiziano Nava, tattico di Phi!Number: “Continuiamo a essere consistenti, con buoni piazzamenti, e la classifica si è un po’ mossa. I primi sembrano imprendibili, ma noi siamo arrivati a questo punto a due giornate dalla fine del campionato, ormai la volata è lanciata. Ci proveremo, l’importante è continuare sempre a migliorarsi, ricordo che il nostro equipaggio si è formato da pochissimo, andiamo in barca insieme da poche settimane”.
Michele Regolo, nazionale classe olimpica Laser: “E’ una barca molto interessante, ha tutti i vantaggi del Laser: monotipia, vele uguali, prestazioni simili, robustezza, e inoltre è una barca sicura e marina. Ma in regata è necessaria tecnica e preparazione specifica, anche le manovre contano, perché con una flotta così numerosa il minimo errore può costare tantissime posizioni”.

LASER SB3 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, PHI!NUMBER TAKES THE FOURTH PLACE
[Laser SB3 International Class Press Release] With last night’s protests completed, the Gold and Silver Fleets were decided for the Volvo Laser SB3 World Championships finals. A further 3 races were scheduled for each of the fleets today. All races were all completed taking the Championship race tally to 9. The Gold Fleet is incredibly strong, including many great sailors with past Laser SB3 pedigree as well as a number of strong contenders from the wider sailing world. The Silver Fleet may not be racing for the Waterford Championships Trophy, but do not be fooled, their fleet will be competitive to the very end.
On the third attempt, the Gold Fleet were successfully away under the fear of a black flag start. The majority of the fleet picked the left hand side of the course, but at the windward mark, the right hand side of the course had clearly paid.
UK Class Chairman, Jerry Hill and his crew onboard 3 Sad Old Blokes notched up some great results for their first finals races taking bullets in the first and second races today. Hill lead to the first windward mark in each race and extended his lead on each leg. It was suggested to Hill that he had made it look easy to win those races, his response, “I’m sure we will make it look very hard before the end of the event!”
Geoff Carveth was back in race mode today, having suffered a broken rudder gudgeon yesterday. Ben Saxton and his young crew onboard Rola-Trac are enjoying great consistency during their first season in the Laser SB3, they’ve posted some excellent results so far and are certainly a boat to watch at this event and in the future.
Gill Race Team’s Craig Burlton, Steve ‘AB’ White and Adam Heeley had a frustrating first race today, but managed to turn their success around with 2 second places in races 8 and 9. Steve ‘AB’ White said, “It was a tough day at the office today, very few boats managed consistency in all 3 races and only Sarah Allan finished in the top 10 in each race. We seem to be a magnet to Luca Rodion, each race we are sailing in the same piece of water!” Burlton and Rodion lie first and second respective in the Gold Fleet, perhaps that is more of a reason for the 2 teams magnetism!
Boomsticks, helmed by Brian Reilly and crewed by brother Paul Reilly and John O’Dowd had a successful day on the Silver Fleet race course finishing the day with a 2, 3, 1 to add to their results. Their closest competition appears to be the Italians onboard Bravi helmed by Vincenzo Graciotti who took two bullets and a fifth today.
Vincenzo Graciotti leads the Silver Fleet overnight, and claims, “I can compete in this fleet because I have silver hair! Today we wore our lucky bear t-shirts, perhaps tonight we will wash them and wear them again tomorrow!”.
