Laser SB3 Wrodl Championship – Torbole – Il Circolo Vela Torbole e lo “stadio della vela” sull’alto lago di Garda ospitano dal 19 al 23 luglio uno degli eventi più attesi della stagione velica internazionale in Italia. Con un numero record di centootto imbarcazioni, trecentiventiquattro velisti e sedici nazioni partecipanti, il Volvo Laser SB3 World Championship promette grande spettacolo ed emozioni.
Si tratta della terza edizione del Mondiale per la Classe Laser SB3, i cui numeri confermano un vero e proprio boom. Il monotipo della celebre famiglia Laser, è una barca di 6,20 metri con bulbo zavorrato retrattile, ampio pozzetto e generosa superficie velica che prevede anche un grande gennaker, per un equipaggio di tre persone.
Al mondiale gardesano i favoriti sono gli equipaggi inglesi, forti anche di una flotta di quaranta imbarcazioni: al via ci saranno anche i due iridati precedentu, Geoff Carveth (2008 a DunLaoghaire) e Craig Burlton (2009 a Cascais). Ma in tanti cercheranno di interrompere la striscia britannica, visto che la lista di paesi comprende Australia, Singapore, Emirati Arabi, Sud Africa, Irlanda, Francia, Olanda, Portogallo, Svizzera, Belgio, Austria, Germania, Ucraina e Russia.
Tra i favoriti d’obbligo a Torbole da segnalare l’ucraino Luka Rodion, medaglia d’argento olimpica della classe acrobatica 49er ad Atene 2004, e recente vincitore della tappa Eurocup del Laser SB3 a Morgat, in Francia. Occhi puntati anche sui sudafricani David e Roger Hudson, padre e figlio fondatori del consorzio Race Ahead che ha collezionato due secondi posti al Mondiale nel 2008 e 2009: che la terza sia la volta buona?
Nutrita e qualificata la flotta di equipaggi italiani a questo Mondiale Laser SB3. Spiccano i nomi di Luca Bacci, armatore e timoniere di Phi!Number sul quale corre anche l’ex di Azzurra Tiziano Nava, di Vincenzo Graciotti, esperto velista dell’Adriatico, di Pietro Negri, che oltre a essere tra gli specialisti della classe è anche il distributore Laser in Italia, di Uberto Crivelli Visconti, giovane atleta delle squadre azzurre della classe olimpica Laser.
Il Mondiale Laser SB3 promette spettacolo in acqua per le condizioni meteo perfette assicurate dall’alto Garda, ma anche a terra per lo spirito sportivo che anima questa classe emergente. La cerimonia di apertura del Mondiale Laser SB3 2010 è in programma al Circolo Vela Torbole domenica 18 luglio alle ore 18,00. Ogni giorno nel dopo-regata è prevista una fascia happy hour. Martedi Pasta Party e giovedì Cocomero Party. Alle 20 di venerdi 23 è prevista la cerimonia di premiazione con Goodbye Party.
Il programma prevede una practice race di prova domenica 18 con partenza alle 15,00. Quindi il segnale del via alla prima regata lunedì 19 alle ore 13. Sono previste tre prove al giorno e due prove nel giorno conclusivo, venerdi 23, per un totale di ben 14 regate. La flotta sarà divisa in due batterie per le prime sei prove di qualificazione e successivamente per le finali in due gruppi Gold e Silver: una strada lunga e appassionante per assegnare un titolo già ambitissimo nel mondo della vela.

[Laser SB3 World Championship Press Release] Racing for the 2010 Volvo Laser SB3 World Championships begins on Monday 19th July and runs until Friday 23rd July at Torbole on Lake Garda, Italy. 108 entries represent 16 nations. 2 fleets will compete in a minimum of 6 qualifying races, before splitting into Gold and Silver Fleets for the finals races. 14 races are scheduled for the Championships. Racing will start at 1300 hrs on Monday 19th July.
The Laser SB3 class last enjoyed international competition on Lake Garda in 2005 when the European Championships were hosted at neighbouring town, Riva del Garda. Judging by the size of the fleet that have travelled to compete in the 2010 Volvo Laser SB3 World Championships, the choice of location for this event was correct!
The majority of the 108 boat fleet have now arrived in Torbole and rigging, registration and launching are well underway in the soaring temperatures delivered by the heat wave that Europe is experiencing.
The inevitable discussion of the favourite for the Championships Title is rife. There is talent a plenty and nobody is willing to place their life savings on an easy champion. Craig Burlton and crew, having recently won the Italian National Championship in Torbole, will defend his 2009 World Championships title. Geoff Carveth, 2008 Laser SB3 World Champion returns to the fleet in 2010. Russia is represented by Rodin Luca of 49er class fame. Luca recently made his presence felt in the Laser SB3 class at the Euro Cup hosted by the Ecole Navale at Morgat in France. Roger Hudson and Ian Ainslie join forces in one of the two South African Race Ahead boats, with the hope of glory in 2010, Roger having finished in second position at both of the previous world championships.
One practice race is scheduled for Sunday [tomorrow] at 1500 hrs leaving enough time for final preparations and those arriving late to switch into World Championship race mode in the morning.
One thing is certain, the competition will tough from the first to the last race and consistency will be crucial for the top boats.
