Rolex Farr 40 World Championship, le riflessioni di Vincenzo Onorato

Rolex Farr 40 World Championship – Porto Cervo – “Prima mattina da ex campione del mondo e anche il primo giorno della campagna Casa de Campo 2010. Quella della classe Farr 40 è una magnifica storia che nessun scrittore potrebbe scrivere con altrettanta fantasia.

Nel 2006 siamo andati a Newport (RI) a casa di Jim Richardson e Terry Hutchinson, nelle acque della potente flotta americana, a strappar loro un Mondiale che sembrava impossibile. Ieri Jim Richardson ed il suo equipaggio ha riscritto la storia portando via non solo a noi di Mascalzone Latino, ma a tutti gli italiani, un Mondiale che sembrava dovesse esser vinto in partenza dalla flotta delle acque di casa. Onore a Jim e Terry che hanno regatato in maniera impeccabile, in testa sin dalla prima regata, non hanno mai più perso la leadership.

Al secondo posto Nerone che ha fatto una magnifica settimana, estremamente veloce e motivato trovava la sua forza nel collettivo e nella velocità determinata, non da ultimo, dal timoniere Antonio Sodo Migliori, in assoluto uno dei migliori del mondo. Traditi da un salto di vento nell’ultima prova hanno conquistato un onorevole secondo posto.

Joe Fly si è visto sfumare un meritato mondiale per una partenza anticipata, Giovanni Maspero e Francesco Bruni, impeccabili come sempre, raccoglieranno presto il frutto del loro lavoro.

Veniamo a noi: sapevamo sin dal principio che non è possibile vincere in eterno, come ci siamo detti la sera della vigilia delle regate a cena fra noi dell’equipaggio. E’ mancata l’usuale determinazione e hanno giocato certamente contro le vittorie di Key West a Gennaio, Montecarlo a Febbraio e Capri a Maggio. Forse per noi l’autentica sorpresa è stata quella di ritrovarci lenti quando siamo stati sempre considerati una delle barche più’ veloci della flotta. Nell’ultimo anno la ricerca sui disegni delle vele è andata avanti, mentre noi abbiamo utilizzato la randa in kevlar-carbonio disegno 2005, che si è rivelata particolarmente lenta di bolina.

Un buon bagno di umiltà per noi tutti di Mascalzone Latino e arrivederci a casa de Campo 2010.

[Mascalzone Latino Press Release] “Today is the first day as former World Champion and of Casa de Campo 2010.

The Farr 40 Class has a wonderful story and no writer could have used more imagination to write it. In 2006 we went to Newport (RI) with Jim Richardson and Terry Hutchinson, in the waters of the strong American fleet, taking them away a World Championship that seemed impossible. Yet Jim Richardson and his crew yesterday rewrote the story, taking away not only from Mascalzone Latino, but from all Italians, a World Championship that the fleet could have won as they sailed at home. Honour to Jim and Terry that sailed perfectly, staying ahead from the beginning and never losing their leadership.

In the second place is Nerone that did a great week, being extremely fast and motivated thanks to its crew and speed, also determined by their helmsman Antonio Sodo Migliori, one of the best in the world. Deceived by the wind during the last race, they ended in second place.

Joe Fly lost the possibility to win a deserved World Championship due to an anticipated start. Giovanni Maspero and Francesco Bruni have been perfect as usual and will soon enjoy the fruits of their labour.

About us: we knew from the beginning it is not possible to always win, as we told each other during a dinner before the regattas. We lacked our usual determination and the victories of Key West in January, Montecarlo in February and Capri in May surely played against. Maybe the real surprise to us has been our slowness, as we have always been considered one of the fastest boats of the fleet. During last year, research on the sailing design has gone on, yet we used the kevlar-carbon mainsail designed in 2005, that proved to be particularly slow when going on a beat.
