L’agenda di settembre riflette in pieno l’interesse del club nei confronti delle classi veliche competitive emergenti, e al contempo denota la consueta attenzione per i grandi eventi dedicati ai superyacht. Emblema di questo duplice orientamento sono le due regate dedicate ai giganti della vela, la Perini Navi Cup e la Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, e le due regate rivolte ad alcune delle classi veliche più competitive in circolazione, Audi Melges Sailing Series 20 e Audi Melges 32 World Championship.
Apre il fitto calendario di settembre la terza edizione della Perini Navi Cup, che dal 3 al 5 richiamerà sulle banchine della Marina un’elegante flotta composta da 21 velieri progettati e costruiti dai rinomati cantieri Perini Navi, leader mondiale nella realizzazione di navi a vela. La sua fama internazionale è dovuta ad uno stile unico, che abbina applicazioni tecnologiche innovative ed eleganza, in un mix vincente che pone questi scafi ai vertici della nautica mondiale. Emblema dello stile Perini Navi The Maltese Falcon, uno tra gli spettacolari velieri che prenderanno parte alla regata. Lunga 88 metri, questa nave è dotata di un rivoluzionario sistema che permette di gestire le 15 vele quadre, montate su tre alberi in carbonio di 55 metri, in maniera del tutto indipendente l’una dall’altra. Un’altra delle eccellenze uscite dal cantiere viareggino che ormeggerà a Porto Cervo è il 56 metri Riela, costruito interamente in alluminio e consegnato lo scorso giugno.
Il secondo degli eventi in programma è la Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (6-12 settembre), giunta alla ventesima edizione e uno dei classici della stagione velica dello Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. Ad oggi sono già 38 i Maxi iscritti alla manifestazione, tutti di lunghezza compresa tra 18 e 46 metri. La flotta si sfiderà sui percorsi costieri che si snodano lungo la costa orientale della Sardegna e sarà divisa nelle categorie Racing, Cruising, Wally, Mini Maxi e Spirit of Tradition, e per la prima volta parteciperà anche la classe Maxi Swan, per cui la regata di Porto Cervo rappresenta la terza tappa del circuito 2009. Tra i protagonisti della regata Alfa Romeo dell’armatore neozelandese Neville Crichton, vincitore nella sua divisione nel 2003 e nel 2006 con lo scafo precedente dallo stesso nome. Grande attesa anche per Gliss, di proprietà dell’armatore Marco Vogele, primo classificato alla Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta di giugno, mentre a rappresentare l’Italia ci saranno il 36 metri Viriella, dell’armatore Vittorio Moretti e Solleone di Leonardo Ferragamo, Presidente di Nautor’s Swan.
Dopo gli spettacolari Maxi yacht il campo di regata di Porto Cervo diverrà il teatro di due regate per flotte one-design a cui parteciperanno alcuni di velisti più esperti al mondo. Si parte il 18 settembre con Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series, che rappresenta la quinta ed ultima tappa del circuito 2009 per la classe. Varato nel 2008, il Melges 20 è uno tra i più giovani scafi monotipo che ci sia in circolazione e si caratterizza per un tipo di navigazione essenziale che permette di esprimere al meglio le intenzioni altamente competitive che caratterizzano tutti gli scafi Melges. Dopo le quattro tappe del circuito, che ha visto vincitore Value Team di Benedetto Giallongo, l’evento di Porto Cervo sarà decisivo per decretare il campione del circuito per quest’anno.
Il calendario sportivo 2009 a Porto Cervo si chiude con uno degli eventi più attesi di quest’anno, Audi Melges 32 World Championship (21-27 settembre). Riservata all’agguerrita flotta dei monotipo, la regata acquista un particolare valore perché rappresenta la prima edizione del Mondiale per la classe. Dopo aver dato prova delle proprie abilità tattiche nelle quattro tappe mediterranee del circuito Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series, i team a bordo delle imbarcazioni progettate da Reichel-Pugh si dovranno misurare sull’impegnativo campo di regata di Porto Cervo. Tra gli equipaggi che prenderanno parte alla competizione Calvi Network di Carlo Alberini, vincitore di Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series di quest’anno, con Gabriele Benussi alla tattica, e Team 93 dell’armatore Claudio Recchi, vincitore del series nel 2008, affiancato dal tattico Harry Melges. Tra gli italiani anche Uka Uka Racing, che l’armatore Lorenzo Santini ha affidato all’esperienza tattica di Lorenzo Bressani e il team di Mascalzone Latino di Vincenzo Onorato.
YACHT CLUB COSTA SMERALDA PREPARES FOR PACKED SEPTEMBER SCHEDULE
[Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Press Release] The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s September sporting calendar consolidates the entire spectrum of modern-day yachting as sailing superyachts, competitive maxis and honed racing sport boats congregate in Porto Cervo for four events which attest the Club’s decision to concentrate on two distinct areas of development: superyacht events designed to bring the cream of the nautical world to the YCCS and competitive regattas for leading one-design classes.
The month kicks off with the Perini Navi Cup from 3rd to 5th September. Organized for the first time by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the third edition of this rendezvous will bring a record fleet of 21 Perini Navi yachts to Porto Cervo for three days of racing through the islands of the La Maddalena archipelago accompanied by a rich social programme for owners and their guests. With 19 of the competing yachts coming in at over 40 metres in length and the inimitable 88 metre Maltese Falcon present to defend her victory in the 2006 edition, spectators will be in for a rare treat.
The 20th edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (6th to 12th September) will see Porto Cervo play host to another fleet of sailing giants, this time ranging from technologically advanced racing machines to elegant cruisers. Thirty-eight maxi yachts have enrolled to date and the fleet will be divided into Cruising, Mini Maxi, Racing and Spirit of Tradition categories while competing Wally yachts race in their own division. The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is open to sailing yachts over 18 metres and some of the largest participating craft, Albert Buell’s Saudade (MLT) and Hasso Plattner’s Visione (GER), measure over 45 metres in length. Neville Crichton (NZL), who was twice victorious in his division (2003 and 2006) with his second Alfa Romeo, will be competing with the third version of Alfa Romeo, a 21 metre mini-maxi launched in 2008. The mini maxi division is likely to see fierce competition with the STP65s Container (GER) and Luna Rossa (ITA) signed up alongside Niklas Zennstrom’s Judel Vrolijk 72 Ran (GBR). Title sponsor Rolex will provide the traditional array of exclusive social events for owners and crews once back ashore.
As the maxi yachts depart from the docks of Porto Cervo Marina they will promptly be replaced by a fleet of one-design racing boats which represent the opposite end of the competitive sailing spectrum. The Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series, the fifth and final leg of the class’ European racing circuit, will take place from 18th to 20th September. The Reichel-Pugh designed Melges 20 was launched in 2008 and is designed to be crewed by two to four people. Like other boats in the Melges sailboat family, the 20 footer combines clean, simple lines with top-level engineering and performance. A strong favourite for the event will be Benedetto Giallongo’s Value Team which currently holds a clear lead in the overall classification for the series.
The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s 2009 Porto Cervo sailing season will conclude in grand style with the first ever World Championship for the Melges 32 class. The Audi Melges 32 World Championship is scheduled from 21st to 27th September and approximately 30 teams are expected to participate. Twenty-five Melges 32s have recently completed the final leg of the Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series which saw Carlo Alberini’s Calvi Network (ITA) take overall victory. Other Italian teams to watch will include Lorenzo Santini’s Uka Uka Racing and Vincenzo Onorato’s Mascalzone Latino. Among the international competitors Pieter Taselaar’s Bliksem (USA) proved to have a strong team when they won the third leg of the series in Scarlino, Italy.
“As is traditional, September will be a very busy month for us,” said YCCS Sports Director Edoardo Recchi. “It is a pleasure for us to be able to organize all of these events which bring us the most beautiful and most diverse fleets of boats: from the 88 metre Maltese Falcon to the 6 metre Melges 20.”
