Tra gli assegnatari c’è anche Francesco Bruni che, terminata l’avventura come skipper di Azzurra, affronterà la stagione 2011 sotto le insegne di Mascalzone Latino.
Commentando la notizia della sua conferma per la stagione 2011, Bruni ha detto: “Abbiamo avuto momenti fantastici nella stagione scorsa e siamo molto entusiasti di correre anche in nel 2011. Abbiamo acquisito un notevole bagaglio di esperienza dal nostro primo anno e ora speriamo di poterla utilizzare al fine di iniziare a vincere qualche regata e poterci presentare per la vittoria del titolo assoluto. Non sarà facile, perché per vincere bisogna battere i migliori match racers in circolazione, ma proprio tutto questo rende il Tour così speciale”.
Tra gli altri destinatari dell’ambita card, che, lo ricordiamo, darà la possibilità ai titolari di competere per il montepremi finale di 1.750.000 Dollari, figurano specialisti come Peter Gilmour, Ian Williams, Jesper Radich, Torvar Mirsky e Damien Iehl.
Assenti dalla lista due grandi nomi dell’uno contro uno internazionale: quello del campione uscente Ben Ainslie, focalizzato sulla campagna olimpica per Londra 2012, e quello dell’ex campione iridato Adam Minoprio, incorporato nell’equipaggio che rappresenterà Emirates Team New Zealand nella Volvo Ocean Race.
Jim O’Toole, CEO del World Match Racing Tour, ha spiegato: “Siamo molto soddisfatti della risposta che abbiamo avuto dai nostri tesserati e davvero contenti che di avere Francesco Bruni tra i confermati. L’Italia ha un grande patrimonio di vela e grande passione per lo sport in generale e sarà bello per i tifosi avere la possibilità di seguire Francesco in tutta la prossima stagione 2011”.
I titolari della wild card, che rappresentano sei paesi diversi, avranno accesso garantito in almeno sei dei nove appuntamenti del tour che avrà inizio con il Match Race di Francia, in programma il prossimo mese di maggio, e si concluderanno con la Monsoon Cup, prevista in Malesia il prossimo novembre.

[World Match Racing Tour Press Release] The line up of Tour Card Holders for the 2011 ISAF World Match Racing Tour has been unveiled and features an exciting mix of former World Champions, established Olympic and America’s Cup campaigners and some of the hottest young stars on the global match racing circuit.
Former Champions Peter Gilmour, Ian Williams, and Jesper Radich head the list of successful applicants who will be competing for the record USD 1.75m prize fund – the richest in world sailing.
Having come so close to winning the title in 2010, France’s Mathieu Richard is back for another crack at the Championship alongside fellow countryman Damien Iehl, a former winner of Match Race Germany.
They will be joined by Olympian and America’s Cup campaigner Francesco Bruni Mascalzone Latino and former Argo Group Gold Cup winner Johnie Berntsson (Berntsson Sailing Team) of Sweden.
Completing the line up are two of the most exciting young prospects in match racing, Torvar Mirsky and New Zealand’s Phil Robertson. Still just 24 years-old, Mirsky will be competing on the Tour for the fourth time and will go into the season as one of the hot favourites having finished second in 2009 and third in 2010.
Commenting on the list of Tour Card Holders, WMRT CEO Jim O’Toole said, “We’re very satisfied with the response that we had from the application process and can now reveal a great line up for 2011, which is sure to provide dramatic action for fans to follow.
“One thing that really stood out during the application process was the level of professionalism of the teams’ tenders. All the teams involved demonstrated a combination of excellent match racing credentials, robust sponsorship and funding models and an ability to add value to the Tour through their own marketing activities which will be a vital element as the Tour looks to expand its profile.”
The Tour Card Holders, who represent 6 different countries, are guaranteed entry to at least 6 of the Tour’s 9 events which get under way with Match Race France in May and concludes with the Monsoon Cup in Malaysia in November when the top 9 teams will be battling for a share of the USD 500,000 Tour Bonus Pool.
