Barcelona World Race, cambio in corsa per Hugo Boss

Barcelona World Race – Barcellona – Con maggioranza schiacciante, la richiesta dell’Hugo Boss Sailing Team di poter sostituire lo skipper Alex Thompson per i primi giorni della Barcelona World Race è stata accolta. Il velista inglese, operato d’urgenza di appendicite, potrà così rimettersi al meglio e unirsi al suo secondo, Andy Meiklejohn, a regata iniziata.
Il felice esito della situazione è dipeso dalla decisione del direttore della Barcelona World Race che, ricevuta formale richiesta dal team, ha attivato la Giuria. I giudici, osservato che nessuna norma del Bando e delle Istruzioni di Regata fa riferimento a casi del genere, ha passato la palla al Comitato Organizzatore e questo, a sua volta, si è rivolto alla classe IMOCA 60, rappresentata da tutti gli skipper iscritti alla regata.
Come detto in apertura, la decisione è stata praticamente immediata: gli skipper hanno votato a favore della mozione, autorizzando Hugo Boss ad unirsi alla regata seppur senza il suo uomo di riferimento, Alex Thompson.
Incassato il si, il management del team ha reso noto che a sostituire Thompson sarà Wouter Verbaak, velista olandese che al suo attivo ha oltre dieci anni di regate oceaniche e che nel 2009 è stato in Volvo Ocean Race prima su Team Russia, poi come navigatore di Delta Lloyd.
BARCELONA WORLD RACE, ALEX THOMPSON WILL BE SOBSTITUTED FOR THE START
[Barcelona World Race Press Release] The participating skippers today agreed by an overwhelming majority to support the request of the Hugo Boss Sailing Team.
The team will announce today the name of the temporary substitute skipper who will partner Andy Meiklejohn on board Hugo Boss from the start.
This morning the regatta direction of the Barcelona World Race has received and has passed directly to the jury the request of Hugo Boss Sailing Team for a temporary substitution of its skipper Alex Thomson who had a surgical intervention yesterday to remove his appendix.
This substitution would allow the boat Hugo Boss to start the race on Friday December 31st together with the rest of the fleet. The request included the permission for Alex Thomson, once he has received medical clearance, to board Hugo Boss and continue the race.
On the basis that there was no rule to which they could directly refer, as such a request is not directly covered by the Notice of Race, the International Jury referred the request to Regatta Organisation.
This Race Organisation decided to submit the request to the IMOCA Class for consultation, represented by all of the competing skippers. The skippers voted by an overwhelming majority to accept the request of the Hugo Boss team. In this way the British IMOCA Open 60 can make the start tomorrow December 31st with Andy Meiklejohn and a substitute for Alex Thomson.
