Audi Settimana delle Bocche, di Azzurra la prima leadership

Porto Cervo – Prima giornata dell’Audi Settimana delle Bocche e l’atmosfera a mare è già calda, nonostante il tempo uggioso che ha fatto da sfondo all’apertura della manifestazione. Dopo due regate a bastone il team di Azzurra – l’imbarcazione di Alberto Roemmers che porta i colori dello Yacht Club Costa Smeralda – guida la flotta dei TP52/IRC52 davanti a Quantum Racing di Doug DeVos e a Gladiator di Tony Langley. Per i Soto 40, invece, oggi è stata una giornata di prove in preparazione alle prime regate a bastone di domani. L’evento, organizzato dallo Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in collaborazione con il title sponsor Audi, è in calendario fino a sabato 14 settembre.
Nella prima delle due regate svolte – con 15/17 nodi di ponente – è iniziata subito la battaglia tra Quantum Racing e Azzurra, attualmente primo e seconda nelle classifica della 52 Super Series. Il team americano, con il veterano di Coppa America Terry Hutchinson alla tattica, ha preso da subito il comando della flotta, ma l’equipaggio italiano, dopo una partenza a metà della flotta, è riuscito a recuperarlo e a passarlo prima della seconda boa di bolina. Azzurra ha poi tagliato il traguardo per prima davanti a Quantum Racing e a Interlodge.
Nella seconda regata è partito subito bene Quantum Racing davanti ad Azzurra e a Gladiator, ma già nel secondo bastone Azzurra si è imposta alla guida e ha trascinato la flotta fino all’ultima bolina. Nell’ultimo bastone incredibile recupero di Gladiator – con il velista di Coppa America Michele Ivaldi nel ruolo di navigatore – che, dopo aver perso diverse posizioni durante il percorso, è riuscito con uno scatto finale a portarsi in avanti e a raggiungere il traguardo per primo. Azzurra chiude in seconda posizione davanti a Quantum Racing.
Vasco Vascotto, tattico di Azzurra, commenta la giornata positiva: “Sappiamo che il nostro scafo offre il meglio quando c’è più vento. I ragazzi hanno ritrovato immediatamente gli automatismi, evitando gli errori di manovra tipici di queste situazioni, sono felice di come abbiamo navigato. Il risultato di oggi conferma che siamo competitivi, ma abbiamo anche visto quanto siano forti gli avversari, da Quantum a Ràn e Gladiator, ci daranno filo da torcere“.
Anche Francesco Bruni, stratega a bordo del TP52, parla della prestazione odierna: “Oggi le regate sono state belle perché il Maestrale era molto instabile, non era il solito maestrale dove vai a sinistra ad occhi chiusi. C’erano dai 15 nodi ai 25, raffiche forti e improvvise per cui il campo di regata ha offerto molte possibilità di sorpasso e a noi, il più delle volte, è andata bene. Quando navighi bene come oggi, con un bel vento, la regata non è mai chiusa, tutto fanno degli errori ma noi ne abbiamo fatto meno degli altri“.
Al rientro gli equipaggi si sono riuniti in Piazza Azzurra per il refreshment in attesa di ritrovarsi in mare domani. Alle 12.00 i TP52 saranno attesi sulla linea di partenza per un percorso costiero, mentre i Soto 40 saranno impegnati in una o più regate a bastone. Le previsioni parlano di vento da ovest intorno ai 15 nodi.

AUDI SETTIMANA DELLE BOCCHE, AZZURRA TAKES THE LEAD
Porto Cervo – Azzurra made something close to the start they wanted at their home waters 52 Super Series Regatta, the Audi Settimana del Bocche, today.
They returned to the dock at Sardinia’s Yacht Club Costa Smeralda just as the drizzling rain started, wearing big smiles after they scored a comfortable win in the breezy first race of the regatta and then took a second place to lead the season’s final event by two clear points.
While the Azzurra team, which has yet to finish a 2013 European regatta better than third overall, could enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done, no one could mistake the frustration of Quantum Racing’s hard driven tactician Terry Hutchinson at their second and third place finishes today.
The American crew, richly studded with America’s Cup winning talent, may be well ahead on the overall 52 Super Series standings but Hutchinson wants to finish their season unbeaten, winning all four trophy regattas, and with that perfect goal in mind, converting their two leading positions at both first windward marks into that second and third, was deeply frustrating for him.
“I want to win the regatta.” Hutchinson emphasised, “I want to put our stamp on the season.”
In the brisk Mistral conditions, the wind just north of west and between 14 and 25 kts, smooth, polished crew work was a premium asset. With rain showers moving through to the south of the island and dark clouds passing overhead, there were always changes in wind pressure and some bigger shifts to use to full effect.
In the first race, the breeziest of the two windward-leewards today, Quantum Racing made the best start and seemed to be cruising to a decent lead. But at the leeward gate second placed Azzurra picked the right hand gate mark and then worked the right side up the second upwind, earning a good lift to lead over Quantum Racing by the final windward mark which they held to the finish line.
Azzurra could not be faulted on their second start. Starting helmsman and strategist Francesco Bruni – racing his first 52 regatta this season – might this morning have claimed to be feeling a little ring rusty after his months in San Francisco on the Luna Rossa AC72, but Azzurra’s second start – on the pin with pace – was as sharp as any. But although they had a small early lead over Quantum Racing up the first minutes of the upwind, the circuit leaders did steadily ease out ahead to lead around the windward mark again.
This time it was on the second downwind that the big changes occurred, Rob Greenhalgh – tactician on Tony Langley’s Gladiator – chose to work left into better pressure and a nice shift. He admitted later that part of the reason was to stay clear of a cluster which had developed behind after Rán Racing blew up their gennaker, but they made a nice gain coming back with Azzurra to steal first and second across the line.
Langley’s Gladiator – once more burying the perception that theirs is something of a light winds specialist – paired a useful fifth to their race win and so lie third overall only one point behind Quantum Racing. The circuit leaders Quantum Racing did have to make a small reshuffle of their crew today, substituting for a sick bowman.
Wednesday sees the first of two coastal races planned this week.
