Audi Settimana delle Bocche, Azzurra difende la leadership

Porto Cervo – Si conclude la seconda giornata dell’Audi Settimana delle Bocche, caratterizzata da più di venti nodi di ponente che hanno infervorato le regate di oggi per il divertimento degli equipaggi e degli spettatori. La classifica provvisoria dei TP52/IRC52 è ancora guidata da Azzurra, la barca di Alberto Roemmers che porta i colori dello Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, mentre Earlybird, di Philipp Schoeller, conquista il comando della classe Soto 40. La manifestazione, in calendario fino a sabato 14 settembre, è organizzata dallo Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in collaborazione con il title sponsor Audi.
I TP52/IRC52, in gara per l’ultima tappa del circuito 52 Super Series, oggi hanno completato una regata costiera di circa 30 miglia che li ha visti dapprima attraversare lo stretto di Capo Ferro e poi quello di Capo d’Orso in direzione di Spargi. Una volta doppiata l’isola, la flotta è ritornata verso Porto Cervo seguendo lo stesso percorso a ritroso con il vento in poppa.
Prosegue la sfida diretta tra Azzurra e Quantum Racing che nella regata odierna hanno dato spettacolo rincorrendosi e superandosi a vicenda lungo tutto il percorso. A spuntarla è stato il team americano di Doug DeVos, che ha tagliato il traguardo per primo, ma Azzurra, con il secondo posto di oggi, rimane ancorata al vertice della classifica davanti a Quantum Racing, anche se per un solo punto. Terza posizione in classifica per Gladiator a pari punti con Ràn di Niklas Zennström.
Terry Hutchinson, tattico a bordo di Quantum Racing commenta la prestazione odierna: “Azione dall’inizio alla fine. Sinceramente è da un po’ che non regatiamo in tali condizioni e ci sono delle cose che potremmo fare meglio, ma è stata una battaglia incredibile con Azzurra per tutto il percorso. Loro hanno fatto una regata fantastica, noi anche; quando siamo tornati nel canale ci hanno rollato, ma siamo riusciti a superarli. I miei complimenti vanno ad entrambi gli equipaggi, ma i nostri oggi hanno regatato davvero bene“.
Si sono sfidati su due percorsi a bastone i Soto 40, per i quali la competizione è valida come ultima tappa del Circuito Europeo della classe. Bigamist e Earlybird, rispettivamente primo e secondo nella classifica del circuito con un solo punto di distacco, si sono già lanciati in un testa a testa entusiasmante per la leadership. Oggi ha avuto la meglio Earlybird – a bordo il velista di Coppa America neozelandese James Baxter – con due secondi posti, mentre Bigamist di Pedro Mendonça si piazza in seconda posizione davanti a Estampa del Viento di Miguel A. Gonzales.
Domani, giovedì 12 settembre, entrambe le flotte saranno impegnate in regate a bastone, la partenza è fissata per le 12.00 e sono previsti circa 25 nodi di ponente. Al rientro tutti gli armatori e gli equipaggi sono invitati al Team Barbecue presso Aqua Lounge in Piazza Azzurra.

AUDI SETTIMANA DELLE BOCCHE, AZZURRA RETAINS THE LEADERSHIP
Porto Cervo – The dust up in Bomb Alley between Quantum Racing and Azzurra was thrilling from beginning to end. The regatta leaders, home favourites Azzurra had the upper hand sometimes on the long windward leg to Spargi island but Quantum Racing kept coming ahead and stealing back their lead. And Austin and Gwen Fragomen’s Interlodge were in the mix early on, too.
But mostly it was the American boat against the blue hulled Azzurra, head to head, duking it out like prize fighters, never more than a few boat lengths apart in a true blue skies Mistral which averaged in the mid 20’s and peaked at 30kts as the nine 52’s rounded the island on the edge of the blustery Strait of Bonifacio.
Winning tactician Terry Hutchinson grinned: “It was a good old fashioned street fight. Occasionally we were throwing chairs at them and they were throwing chairs back at us!”.
At the start of the 31 miles course Azzurra lead off the start line and enjoyed the early advantage and really did look set to step clear of the busy traffic behind as they lead into the narrow channel where the waters are flat and the wind whistles down between the islands. But Quantum Racing worked relentlessly and at one point lifted almost around the bows of Azzurra.
At Spargi island in big, unruly waves and gusts to well over 30kts the two leaders set gennakers in perfect stereo, side by side. Azzurra were slightly quicker and used some of the malicious gusts to better effect and surged to a lead of a couple of boat lengths. As they crossed the ferry route between Palau and Maddalena, Azzurra slid spectacularly round the bow of a ferry to gain a few metres whilst Quantum Racing held high to get around the ship’s stern.
In the final mile and a half of the ‘alley’ Ed Baird managed to get Quantum Racing’s bow up over Azzurra’s stern and suddenly they surged past in a gust. The next time they came together, Quantum Racing gybing on to starboard, Azzurra responded late. In the split second they had the choice of gybing quickly and staying inside or going round the back of Azzurra. They did the latter and lost control only momentarily but between the two consecutive moves that was enough for the 52 Super Series leaders to surge ahead to a decisive lead which they held to the finish line at the entrance to Porto Cervo.
After three races Azzurra lead by a single point on the strength of the their 1,2,2 so far with Quantum Racing second after their 2,3,1. Only two points separate Gladiator on 13pts from Provezza in sixth.
