Riva del Garda – The Garda Meeting Optimist begins tomorrow, and the eve of its 37th edition is a success for Italy and for Fraglia Vela Riva in particular: the young sailor Alex Demurtas, already European Champion in 2018, won today the 5th edition of the Country Cup.
The Italian representative left behind himself a list of over 30 athletes: the young sailors, selected among the best athletes of the national teams taking part in the Meeting, completed three races in excellent weather conditions, with a stable Ora wind from the South blowing between 8 and 12 knots.
Thanks to the explosive final (today’s partial scores are 13-2-2), Demurtas has left behind the representative of Germany, Casper Ilgenstein (12-5-6) and the Finnish Henrik Poulakka (10-10-5).
The winners of the three races held today in the Country Cup were, in order, the Hungarian Olivier Demjen (1-18-UFD), the Swedish Emil Wolfgang (UFD-1-19) and the Brazilian Eduardo Zeitone Guimaraes (2-23-1).
After cheering for compatriots from the shores of Lake Garda, more than 1100 young sailors registered to the 37th edition of the Garda Optimist Meeting have celebrated the opening of the event in the crowded streets of Riva del Garda.
The current entry list is counting on 1164 members, of which 170 Cadets (born in 2009 and 2010) and 994 Juniores (born between 2004 and 2008). Italy and Germany are the most significantly represented teams, but there are young sailors from all over the world, for a total of forty countries represented, including the Bahamas, Bermuda, Cayman, British Virgin Islands and Turks and Caicos. An athlete will carry the flag of Kenya in the Juniores category, while the numbers of teams from the United Arab Emirates, Belgium, Denmark and Russia, in both categories, grow year by year.
Giancarlo Mirandola, President of Fraglia Vela Riva, said: “We are proud to have exceeded the number of 1000 registered sailors this year and we will do everything to make it a great event, worthy of the previous editions. I want to thank already the employees, the staff and all the volunteers who allow us to set up such an important event every year “.
The first preparatory signal for the 2019 edition of the Garda Meeting Optimist is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday 18 April, at 1 pm: Cadet athletes will be able to complete up to eight races, while nine races are scheduled for Junior sailors; both categories will be able to discard the worst result of the series upon completion of the fourth race.
