ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year, vincono Blanca Manchon e Tom Slingsby

ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year – Atene – Si è conclusa da poche ore la cerimonia di premiazione del Velista dell’Anno, premio assegnato dall’ISAF ai velisti che si sono meglio distinti nel corso della stagione agonistica appena conclusa. Ad aggiudicarsi il titolo sono stati la spagnola Blanca Manchon, plurititolata campionessa dell’RS:X Femminile, e l’australiano Tom Slingsby, grandissimo specialista della classe Laser e campione del mondo Etchelles. Esperienza indimenticabile, e ci auguriamo da ripetere, per Lorenzo Bressani, battuto sul filo di lana ma meritevole di ogni complimento per il solo fatto di aver ricevuto l’ambita nomination.

Per la Manchon, presente ad Atene con la famiglia al completo, il successo è arrivato dopo tre nomination: “Sono contentissima. Dopo tre tentativa speravo fosse finalmente la volta buona. Non posso crederci. Ho lavorato moltissimo per essere qui, ma sono molto giovane e spero di farmi rivedere su questo palco”.

Tom Slingsby, invece, non ha potuto raggiungere la capitale greca a causa delle tempesta elettrica che ha costretto a terra la quasi totalità dei voli internazionali in uscita dall’Australia. Slingsby, intervistato al telefono circa le sue performance stagionali, è rimasto sorpreso nell’apprendere della vittoria in diretta. A dargli la notizia è stato il Principe Frederik di Danimarca: “Grazie davvero – ha commentato il campione aussie – Ricordo quando mi sedevo sugli scogli di Sydney per seguire le regate dei Giochi Olimpici. Ricordo velisti come Ben Ainslie, Robert Scheidt, che prima di me hanno vinto questo premio. Guardando loro mi sono posto degli obiettivi e li ho raggiunti, ma essere cosiderato al loro pari è una cosa che mi onora moltissimo”.

[Regattanews Press Release] ISAF and Rolex are proud to announce that the male and female winners of the 2010 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards are: Blanca Manchón and Tom Slingsby.

Blanca Manchón was nominated for the third time this year and had her family and friends with her at the Awards ceremony here in Athens. “This is really fantastic,” said a radiant Manchón on stage as she accepted her trophy and her Rolex timepiece. “As this is my third nomination for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award we were all hoping this would be it… and here I am! I cannot believe it. I worked very hard to get here but I’m young – only 23 years old – so I hope I continue to do many things and maybe I will see you again here someday.”

Tom Slingsby could not make it to Athens for the ceremony due to electrical storms over Sydney that grounded international flights. Slingsby was surprised when his phone call to “discuss laser sailing”, turned into a live announcement from HRH Prince Frederik of Denmark, announcing that he had won the 2010 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award. “Wow, thank you!” said Slingsby. “I just remember sitting on the rocks in Sydney harbour watching the Olympics. I remember seeing people like Ben Ainslie and Robert Scheidt, two former winners of the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards, and thinking, “I want that, that’s really what I want to do.” To be considered among them today is really an incredibly big honour.”

The ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award is the highest award a sailor can receive in recognition of his/her outstanding achievements. The Awards are presented annually based on a worldwide selection process that incorporates an open invitation to nominations, followed by a vote amongst the 130 member nations of the International Sailing Federation.

The Awards have been held every year since 1994 and past winners include Peter Blake, Ellen MacArthur, Robert Scheidt and Russell Coutts. In 2009 the Awards were presented to Torben Grael and Anna Tunnicliffe.
