Rolex Sydney Hobart, abbandonato il Georgia

[singlepic=1219,250,170,,left]Rolex Sydney Hobart – Sydney – Alle 21.20 ora locale, mentre si trovava 32 miglia a est di Point Peprendicular, il Farr 53 Georgia, impegnato nella Sydney Hobart, ha perso il timone e ha iniziato a ad imbarcare acqua. La gravità della situazione ha obbligato lo skipper Greame Ainley a lanciare il mayday e a ordinare l’abbandono della barca. Tim Cox, presidente del Comitato di Regata, ha allertato le autorità australiane e immediati sono scattati i soccorsi. Il primo a raggiungere al zona dell’incidente è stato Telcoinabox Merit che, per prestare assistenza all’equipaggio in difficoltà, ha abbandonato la regata.

Già alle 23.00, mentre il Georgia era ormai semi affondato, tutti i quattordici membri dell’equipaggio erano stati trasbordati a bordo del VOR 60 Telcoinabox Merit utilizzando le zattere autogonfiabili. Lo scafo di Leo Rodriguez ha quindi fatto rotta verso Batemans Bay, dove, alle prime luci dell’alba, i naufraghi sono stati lasciati al locale posto di Polizia.

ROLEX SYDNEY HOBART, YACHT GEORGIA IS SINKING
[Rolex Sydney Hobart Press Release] At approximately 21.20, 32 miles south east of Point Perpendicular, a mayday call was issued from the yacht Georgia, a Farr 53 owned by Graeme Ainley and John Williams from Sandringham Yacht Club, as a result of losing her rudder and taking on water.

Tim Cox, Race Committee Chairman liaised with the relevant authorities including AMSA, NSW Water Police and the CYCA Emergency Management Team to effect a rescue. Radio Relay Vessel JBW assisted with the rescue by communicating instructions from the Race Committee to nearby vessels. Telcoinabox Merit, being closest to the stricken yacht effected a rendezvous and stood by for further instructions.

At approximated 23.00 all 14 crew members from Georgia were transferred to Telcoinabox Merit without incident via liferaft.

Telcoinabox Merit set course for Batemans Bay, where the crew will be transferred to the Police launch Nemisis in daylight.

At the time of the crew transfer the yacht was on the verge of sinking and is likely to be lost at sea.
