La Grande Motte – Last day for the Nacra 17 Worlds, 49er & 49er:FX Europeans regattas at the Grande Motte International Regatta 2024: up for grabs are the Men’s Skiff (49er) and Women’s Skiff (49er:FX) European championships and the Mixed Multihull world championship (Nacra 17).
Only a miracle for the opponents and collapse of the Italians would have taken away the joy of victory for Tita-Banti who had a reassuring advantage of eighteen points over their direct opponents. Today the Italian crew demonstrated the usual solidity that allowed them to win the World Championship without worries less than three months before the start of the Olympics. Excellent performance, again in the Mixed Multihull (Nacra 17) with Ugolini-Giubilei capable of keeping their opponents behind and confirming third place which allows them to climb to the lowest step of the podium. Among the Italian crews, the English Gimson-Burnet finished with silver.
In the Women’s Skiff (49er:FX) final victory for the Belgian crew Maenhaut-Geurts, second place for the French Steyaert-Picon and third for the British Black-Tidey.
For the Men’s Skiff I extend today for the Uruguayans Umpierre-Diz who once again prove to be at ease.
There are 142 participating teams, from 32 nations, ready for a dress rehearsal for the Paris Olympic Games. The level of competition is very high, with 7 Olympic medal teams, 20 world champions and 17 European champions in the water.
This is Michele Marchesini’s statement on his eighth Olympic Class World title as Technical Director: “We arrived at La Grande Motte with precise objectives, as for these disciplines it was the last significant regatta test before the Olympics. The performances confirmed where we are with preparation and provided new data to analyze. Excellent performance all round by Tita Banti; above all I liked their fifth day in extreme conditions of very light wind. Another world title, another well-deserved title. The bronze of Ugolini and Giubilei confirms a solidity that has been seen in them for years now. Germani Bertuzzi started well and were in the lead after the first two days, with the change in conditions there was a decline in performance which I will evaluate carefully with Technician Sibello but probably attributable to settings and materials. We know how much you can learn even from small missteps.”
The statements of the protagonists:
Tita Banti: “We have just concluded the world championship and we managed to win this too, our fourth world title. We are very happy and satisfied with what we have done in this very busy week. However, we are aware that the most significant event for this year remains the Olympics, and this championship was a fundamental step in our approach. Now we will continue our preparations tirelessly for Marseille.”
Ugolini Giubilei: “We faced a Medal Race characterized by light and erratic winds, which made the competition particularly unpredictable. The fight for third place involved three other boats, and the race remained uncertain until the end. Despite the difficulties, we managed to maintain control over our direct competitors, positioning ourselves strategically. With an eighth place in the Medal Race, we managed to keep the Swedes, our main rivals, behind us, thus taking third place. We are extremely satisfied, especially because this result sees two Italian crews on the podium in a pre-Olympic competition. This success confirms our high level of consistent performance over time.”
