Audi MedCup, solida leadership per Team Origin

Audi MedCup – Cartagena – Dopo la seconda giornata di regata, caratterizzata da vento intorno agli 8-9 nodi e mare piatto, Team Origin si conferma la barca da battere al Trofeo Caja Mediterráneo Regione di Murcia. Ben Ainslie e compagni sembrano finalmente in grado di sfruttare tutte le potenzialità della propria barca, l’unica nuova del Circuito, portando a casa un terzo, un secondo e un primo posto. Con i risultati di oggi, gli inglesi (sempre sul podio nelle prime cinque regate del trofeo) si portano dunque a 10 punti in classifica, staccando di ben 8 lunghezze Emirates Team New Zealand. Per l’occasione a bordo di Team Origin era ospite Juande Ramos, ex allenatore del Real Madrid.
Sorpasso Kiwi
Il team di Dean Barker è dunque il nuovo avversario diretto di Team Origin, grazie a un quinto, un quarto e un terzo posto che hanno permesso ai Kiwi di sorpassare in classifica gli argentini di Matador (terzi a 19 punti). Per il team di Bruni e Vascotto è arrivata oggi anche una vittoria, “vanificata” però dal quinto posto nella seconda prova e, soprattutto, dall’ottavo in gara 3.
Spunta la Luna
Quarta posizione in classifica, a 26 punti, per Luna Rossa (9-6-2 oggi), finalmente competitiva e capace, complici le belle partenze, di star vicina anche ai team più forti. Dietro al team italiano, quinto posto (27 punti) per Artemis (2-10-4), e sesta piazza (a 30 punti) per Quantum Racing (6-3-7).
Solo settimo un intramontabile Bribon
Nonostante la settima posizione in classifica, non smette di stupire Bribon (33 punti), la barca più vecchia del circuito, che oggi riesce anche a vincere, con merito, gara 2. Dietro gli spagnoli, chiudono la classifica Synergy (35 punti), Cristabella (42 punti), Audi A1 Powered by All4One (42 punti) e Bigamist 7 (48 punti).
Subito Cian nella GP42 Series
Così come Team Origin, anche per Madrid – Caser Seguros la giornata ha portato un terzo, un secondo e un primo posto, che significano subito leadership per il team di Paolo Cian. Con 6 punti, la barca spagnola si porta infatti in testa alla classifica, staccando di due lunghezze una sorprendente Peninsula Petroleum (8 punti) e di tre i rivali di Islas Canarias Puerto Calero (9 punti). Quarta posizione per Airisessential (11 punti), davanti a Iberdrola (11 punti).
Il programma
Domani, viste le previsioni favorevoli (si attendono circa 20 nodi di vento), il comitato cercherà di dare il via, per la TP52 Series, a una prova a bastone e alla regata costiera. Tre prove a bastone, invece, per la GP42 Series. Come sempre, la diretta dell’Audi MedCup TV avrà inizio alle ore 12:50, dieci minuti prima dell’inizio delle regate. Per quanto riguarda gli spettacoli del villaggio pubblico, dopo il successo del concerto jazz di ieri sera della Menor Jazz Band questa sera è il momento della “Notte Cubana”, per scatenarsi con le musiche e i balli tipici dell’isola caraibica.

AUDI MEDCUP, OPEN LEAD FOR TEAM ORIGIN
[Audi MedCup Press Release] Team Origin stayed consistent across a testing day of racing over which the starts were always high pressure affairs, when the bulk of the TP52 fleet tussled for the favoured right hand side of the race track upwind. Often that put a high premium on being best positioned towards the committee boat, right end of the start line.
Again Team Origin generally started strongly, balancing risk and reward through the stressful final countdown, but also showing good speed in the sub 10 knots SW’ly breezes. While they really minimised mistakes, their main regatta rivals, Alberto Roemmers Matador were not quite so fortunate.
After winning the first race, seizing the opportunity presented to them within the final 200 metres of the finish line when Team Origin gybed away into lighter wind, Matador could only follow up with a fifth and eighth to finish the day third overall behind Emirates Team New Zealand.
In the second race it was Ian Walker and the crew of Spain’s Bribon which triumphed, followed across the finish line by Team Origin.
While Team Origin were able to extend progressively over second placed Luna Rossa in the third race, winning comfortably, circuit leaders Emirates Team New Zealand looked to have made a costly error when they stuck to the right side of the first downwind leg, breaking from the line taken by all of their main rivals.
That cost them three places, but a smart final beat – when they recognised the breeze swinging back right – allowed them to quickly absolve themselves and they finished a solid third.
It completed a solid day for the Kiwi team, Audi MedCup Champions of the TP52 Series, as they posted a 5,4,3 to extend still further their overall Circuit lead, while Team Origin have finished in the top three in every one of the five races so far.
Three different boats won each of today’s three races: Matador, Bribón and Team Origin in the TP52’s and Peninsula Petroleum, Islas Canarias Puerto Calero and Madrid – Caser Seguros on the GP42’s.
First win of the seasson for Bassadone
Madrid – Caser Seguros lead the GP42 Series with their 2,3,1 scoreline today two points ahead of John Bassadone’s Peninsula Petroleum who won the first race and finished second in the third, but partners these scores with a fifth in the second race to lie two points behind the leaders.
In the GP42’s today Madrid-Caser Seguros’s gained another four points in their slim lead over Islas Canarias Puerto Calero in the overall standings.
But another interesting story is in the impressive performance put in by the current runner-up, Peninsula Petroleum, who, except for a last-placed finish in the second race could have taken the early lead themselves.
New to the GP42 Series this season, this team was hampered in the first two stages by bad luck and a broken masthead crane but has been improving at each stage, and are now enjoying their first time on the leaderboard up among the frontrunners.
The schedule for the TP52’s has been changed to offer one windward-leeward tomorrow followed by a 20 miles coastal race.
