Audi MedCup, la prima Warm-Up Race è di Bribon

Audi MedCup – Alicante – “Barca vecchia fa buon bordo” verrebbe da dire dopo la practice race ufficiale di oggi che ha aperto il Trofeo Città di Alicante. Bribón, il team che attualmente regata con la barca più anziana del Circuito, infatti sorprende tutti e va a vincere con grande facilità la practice race, dopo aver passato tutte le boe in prima posizione. Secondo posto per i portoghesi di Bigamist 7, staccati 50 secondi dagli spagnoli. Terzo, a 1 minuto e 36″ da Bribón, Emirates Team New Zealand (la prima delle tre barche nuove), che dopo un primo bordo di bolina non certo esaltante (7° in boa) recupera posizioni fino a chiudere terzo, davanti a un’altra delle barche varate nel 2009, Matador.

Ci si aspettava certamente qualcosa in più dai neozelandesi, che non hanno ancora fatto vedere grandissime velocità. E qualcosa di più, ci si aspettava anche dal detentore del titolo, l’americana Quantum Racing, che non riesce ad andare oltre al 5° posto. Ma entrambe le barche non hanno certo ancora dato mostra delle proprie possibilità.

Luci e ombre, invece, per l’Italia. Vasco Vascotto, iscritto negli ultimi giorni al Circuito Audi MedCup 2009, e ancora senza un main sponsor, chiude la practice race con un ottimo quarto posto, dimostrando che la sua Pisco Sour può avere più di una chance per dimostrare qualcosa di buono in questo Trofeo Città di Alicante. Malissimo, invece, Audi Sailing Team di Riccardo Simoneschi, che finisce ultimo in classifica, nonostante una discreta partenza. Per il team italiano ci sarà ancora molto da lavorare. Ma siamo appena agli inizi, ancora non c’erano punti in ballo, e Audi Sailing Team ha certamente tutto il tempo per migliorarsi.

Fra gli altri, prova deludente anche per Artemis di Russel Coutts, che con la barca nuova non riesce ad andare oltre all’8° posto. Alti e bassi, invece, per Marazzi Sailing: dopo una partenza disastrosa, e la rottura dello spi all’inizio della prima poppa, il team svizzero si riprende e riesce a terminare la prova in settima posizione.

Appena terminate le regate, nel tardo pomeriggio è stato anche inaugurato il Race Village. Presenti, per l’occasione, Sonia Castedo, sindaco di Alicante, Marcos Senna, centrocampista della squadra del Villareal e campione Europeo con la Nazionale Spagnola e Terry Hutchinson, vincitore dell’Audi MedCup 2008. Il nastro è stato tagliato da Senna e dal Sindaco, insieme a Ignacio Triay, Direttore del Circuito Audi MedCup.

AUDI MEDCUP, THAT OLD BRIBON MAGIC
Audi MedCup – Alicante – Runners up for the 2008 Audi MedCup Circuit, Bribon proved their magical Alicante mojo may still be intact despite now being the oldest boat on this year’s TP52 Series.

In 2007 Bribon won her maiden regatta to take the City of Alicante Trophy just days after being completed, built in near to record time, winning by a single point. And last year it was only one point which separated Bribon from retaining the Alicante trophy, finishing second to Mean Machine.

With French double Olympic medallist Thierry Peponnet steering, Bribon – which is completely unaltered since last season – lead at every mark of today’s curtain- raising practice race and crossed the finish line well clear of Portugal’s second placed Bigamist 7, Pedro Mendonca’s latest TP52 which is the former Platoon powered by Team Germany.

The hazy conditions which prevailed over Alicante denied any chance of the light, and times shifty and patchy breeze building to anything meaningful. Rarely did the wind top nine knots, but it was always enough for Bribon to keep the 12 boat TP52 fleet trailing behind. The typically understated Peponnet confessed later that part of their winning move, starting off the pin end, was as much as result of snaring a plastic bag around their keel two and a half minutes before the start gun.

They crossed the fleet mid-way up the first beat, gaining a steady advantage after they tacked, and were more than 30 seconds clear as they lead away from the windward mark.

Alicante has usually favoured smart sailing and today the Portuguese team on Bigamist 7, proved their hard work over recent weeks of training off Cascais, including local Lisbon races, ensures their crew work is slick enough to be a threat here.

Finishing fifth Audi MedCup Champions Quantum Racing (USA) had a sharp reminder that there will be no chance of resting on their laurels, not least with three new boats this season to contend with. Emirates Team New Zealand with their new Botin Carkeek design may have won the start cleanly with a well timed and executed collaboration between helm Dean Barker (NZL), navigator Kevin Hall (USA) and tactician Ray Davies (NZL), but they had to work hard to rescue a third place.

Meanwhile preparations continued for the GP42 Series fleet who have their Practice Race tomorrow (Wednesday). The Audi MedCup village for the City of Alicante Trophy regatta was officially opened to the public this afternoon with Sonia Castedo, the Mayoress of Alicante, footballer Marco Senna who was a member of Spain Euro 2008 championship winning team, Terry Hutchinson (USA), skipper of the Audi MedCup champions Quantum Racing (USA), Ignacio Triay (ESP) of the Audi Med Cup Circuit and Bribon (ESP) and Jaime Yllera (ESP) the President of the TP52 Med Fleet among the key guests and VIP’s.
