Audi MedCup, di Quantum Racing la prima leadership

[singlepic id=6226 w=300 h=200 float=left]Audi MedCup – Marsiglia – Si conferma altamente imprevedibile il campo di regata della rada sud di Marsiglia, con molti salti di vento e tanto lavoro per i tattici. A spuntarla nella prima giornata del Trofeo di Marsiglia è Quantum Racing, capace di andare a vincere oggi ben due gare su tre, conquistando così la testa della classifica. Una leadership, con 10 punti, condivisa con l’argentino Matador.
Vittorie e continuità
Il team di Terry Hutchinson ha dunque messo la propria firma su questa giornata di regate, grazie a due prove intense condotte senza errori. Rammarico, per gli americani, solo per il risultato nella prima regata, chiusa all’ottavo posto. Discorso differente per Matador: niente vittorie per la barca con a bordo Francesco Bruni e Vasco Vascotto, ma grande regolarità di risultati, con due terzi e un quarto. Il team argentino conferma dunque quanto di buono fatto a vedere negli ultimi giorni del Trofeo del Portogallo.
Conferme franco-tedesche
E conferme sono arrivate anche dal team franco-tedesco di Audi A1 Powered by All4One, con due ottimi secondi posti conquistati oggi. Il nono posto ottenuto nella seconda regata, non ha però permesso a Schuemann e compagni di andare oltre al gradino più basso del podio in classifica generale, condiviso a 13 punti con i britannici di Cristabella.
Sorpresa spagnola
Segnali positivi per Bribon, che dopo le delusioni di Cascais si rifà nella prima giornata di Marsiglia, conquistando a sorpresa anche una vittoria in gara uno. In virtù dei piazzamenti nelle altre due regate, chiuse entrambe all’ottavo posto, gli spagnoli si piazzano momentaneamente in quinta posizione, a pari merito, con 17 punti, con Synergy.
Luna Rossa a sprazzi
Due quinti posti nelle prime due prove e un decimo nell’ultima, lo score di oggi per l’italiana Luna Rossa. La barca timonata qui a Marsiglia da Lorenzo Bressani, ha dunque mostrato segni di miglioramento rispetto a Cascais, gareggiando, nelle prime due regate, sempre a ridosso dei team di testa. Per Luna Rossa, dopo la prima giornata, ottavo posto in classifica a 20 punti.
Defaillance Kiwi
Giornata no per Emirates Team New Zealand, che con un decimo, un sesto e un quinto posto, chiude il primo giorno con 21 punti, addirittura in penultima posizione. Per Dean Barker e compagni qualche scelta tattica sbagliata e un po’ di sfortuna (rottura dello spinnaker in gara due). Peggio dei Kiwi, hanno fatto solo gli svedesi di Artemis, con Paul Cayard che non è riuscito a portare il proprio equipaggio oltre a un settimo, un decimo (seguito dal ritiro dopo la fine per uno stampo mancante sullo spinnaker) e un nono posto. Per loro, ultima posizione ora a 27 punti.
Nella GP42 Series, Paolo Cian lascia la vittoria della practice a Iberdrola
Madrid Caser-Seguros domina la practice race della GP42 Series, ma per scaramanzia decide di non passare il traguardo lasciando la vittoria ai secondi classificati, gli spagnoli di Iberdrola. Ottima prova per Paolo Cian e compagni, abili a sfruttare i salti di vento del campo di regata. Dietro a Iberdrola, secondo posto per i campioni in carica di Islas Canarias Puerto Calero, davanti a Peninsula Petroleum e all’italiana Airiessential, con Gabriele Benussi alla tattica.

AUDI MEDCUP, QUANTUM RACING’S SMILE
[Audi MedCup Press Release] As 2008 champions Quantum Racing rekindled their winning mojo with back to back wins in Races 2 and 3 to lead the regatta at the end of the first day, the reigning champions came off the water in ninth of ten and 2007 circuit winners in tenth.
Breezes rarely topped ten knots but it was the changes in strength and direction which made life especially testing for afterguards. Taking the positive benefits of the bend generated by the steep, bluff Marseilleveyre mountains was usual key. But there was no simple strategy, there were many traps, zones of light winds which were best avoided.
With Morgan Larson, who won as tactician for the 2008 champions, returned to the afterguard fold for this regatta, Quantum Racing’s starts were strong and their tactical sailing a good blend of pushing when they needed to and managing the risks in the patchy breezes.
They were able to hold off Synergy by only 3 seconds in a thrilling finish to Race 2.
Winning, ahead of Audi A1 Powered by All4One in the third race, sees Terry Hutchinson and the team end the day locked even on 10 points with the very consistent Matador whose 3,3,4 for the day is a welcome tonic after their slightly disappointing Portugal Trophy regatta.
Emirates Team New Zealand unfortunately repeated that off-key start that they made to the season’s first races, tenth in the first contest which was won by Bribon.
This time, in the lighter conditions which are not the powerful Kiwi boat’s favourite, they failed to bounce back into the top tier of the fleet during the following two races, but so close are the points in this extremely tight class that they are only four points shy of the top half of the fleet.
Superstition in the GP42 practice race
Helmsman Paolo Cian today acted on an age-old superstition common among sailors, which holds that winning the practice race before a big event brings bad luck.
He and his team on Madrid – Caser Seguros were leading going into the finish of today’s practice race, but pulled away to score DNF, a move which he hopes will help him repeat his win here last year.
Meanwhile, 2008 Class Champion Iberdrola, making their Marseille Trophy debut, had no qualms in taking the practice race win, if only by 10 seconds over the team currently on top of the GP42 Series leaderboard. Islas Canarias Puerto Calero has regained not only their title sponsor of last year, but also a replacement team member for mastman Carlos Hernandez who injured his hand yesterday while repairing the boom that was broken in transit to this event. Marcos Aliaga will sail this week for the team.
Another critical repair was that of the masthead crane on Peninsula Petroleum, broken in Cascais just moments before the start of the last breezy day of racing there – in today’s 10 knots all looked well.
