Audi MedCup, a Cristabella la regata che non conta

[singlepic id=5831 w=300 h=204 float=left]Audi MedCup – Cascais – Per la practice race del Trofeo del Portogallo-Cascais, prima ufficiale della TP52 Series nel circuito Audi MedCup 2010, la giornata si apre con vento da 290°, circa 10 nodi d’intensità, e mare leggermente mosso.
La prima delle due partenze di prova vede partire subito bene Team Origin e Quantum Racing, sulla sinistra del campo di regata, e Luna Rossa sulla destra. La seconda partenza premia Bigamist, al centro del campo seguito da Emirates Team New Zealand e i russi di Synergy. La terza partenza, quella valida per la practice race ufficiale, vede ancora Team Origin partire davanti a tutti, con Emirates Team New Zealand e Matador subito dietro.
E sono proprio i kiwi i protagonisti del primo bordo di bolina, con il vento che salta leggermente a destra aumentando anche d’intensità: prima posizione in boa davanti a Team Origin e a un’ottima Cristabella. Quarta posizione per Matador, settima Luna Rossa. Tutto cambia dopo la boa: split della flotta, con Cristabella e Matador a destra ed Emirates Team New Zealand e Team Origin a sinistra. La tattica premia il bordo di destra, con Cristabella che riesce a girare la boa di poppa davanti a tutti. Seconda posizione per Emirates Team New Zealand, staccato di soli 3 secondi, terzo Matador (+17) che riesce a passare Team Origin. E proprio il team inglese è protagonista di una brutta manovra di ammaina di spi: Ben Ainslie deve aspettare ad orzare, perdendo molta acqua e tantissimi secondi dai primi.
Il secondo bordo di bolina è però un remake del primo, con Emirates Team New Zealand e Matador che dimostrano tutte proprie potenzialità, riportandosi rispettivamente in prima e seconda posizione, con gli argentini staccati di 10 secondi. Scivola al terzo posto Cristabella, lontana 19 secondi dal leader.
Il bordo di poppa finale dimostra però che quest’anno non sarà semplice per nessuno, con Cristabella, velocissima andature portanti, capace di recuperare due posizioni andando a vincere la prima practice race del circuito Audi MedCup 2010 davanti a Emirates Team New Zealand e Matador. Bene Luna Rossa, quinta al traguardo dopo un ottimo recupero. Alti e bassi, invece, per l’altro esordiente, Team Origin, penalizzato a metà gara da un brutto errore in ammaina di spinnaker che lo ha relegato all’ottavo posto.
Domani sarà tempo di practice race per la GP42 Series, con la TP52 Series che affronterà le prime regate valide per la classifica del Trofeo del Portogallo-Cascais, prima tappa del circuito Audi MedCup 2010. E visti i premboli di oggi, le emozioni certo non mancheranno.

AUDI MEDCUP, CRISTABELLA WINS CASCAIS PRACTICE RACE
[Audi MedCup Press Release] The British flagged team on Cristabella proved that good boat speed, smart starting and solid tactics can be the match for any of what would be considered the 2010 Audi MedCup Circuit season’s top seeded teams when they won the first official practice race of the season at the Portugal Trophy, Cascais.
Cristabella is one of the oldest boats in the 11 strong TP52 Series fleet but they were able to slip past 2009’s defending champions Emirates Team New Zealand on the final run, to take first gun.
Changes to the crew line up, a new rig and a change of sail brand may have contributed to Cristabella‘s success today – one which will not only be an early season morale-boost to owner John Cook and his team – but it proves that race wins in this fleet need not only be restricted to top budget teams with very recent boats, particularly on this race very open race course which was peppered with wind shifts, gusts and changes in wind pressure.
Champions Emirates Team New Zealand looked ominous and were never out of the top two except when they ducked sterns to get to the slightly favoured right of the first beat. They lead around the final windward mark but gybed slightly early, mid way down the final leg, giving opportunity to Cristabella to profit by holding on longer.
Newcomers Team Origin made an excellent start to their first official practice race in the fleet with their boat which was only named officially this morning. With four times Olympic medallist Ben Ainslie steering, and reigning Star Olympic champions Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson conspiring to make the tactical calls, Team Origin 1851 was in contention until the leeward gate at the end of the first round of the 2.1 miles windward-leeward track. A fouled retrieval line on their spinnaker dropped them back into the body of the pack and they crossed in eighth.
The race course area falls under the combined influences of the Cascais shoreline and the stronger gradient NW’ly breeze further out to sea, making for interesting differences in wind pressure between the leeward and windward marks.
On this more inshore of Cascais’ two possible course arenas, today proved that afterguard members, charged with making the tactical calls, will either relish and rise to the challenges, or live to rue missed opportunities.
As Cristabella‘s tactician John Cutler noted sagely: “I think all the tacticians are going to be pretty tired after this week. It is a pretty tough race course with big shifts. And that makes it a hard place to sail. If that is where we are going to sail then we can come first or last and it will be pretty easy to do both.”
Tomorrow the GP42 Series have their first practice race of the season and were all on the water training today, except defending champion Puerto Calero, who only arrived this afternoon after a difficult delivery passage from the Canary Islands.
