Audi MedCup, a Cagliari dominano i kiwi e Islas Canarias

Audi MedCup 2009 – Cagliari – Splendida giornata a Cagliari, con il maestrale che regala un emozionante finale di tappa. Vittoria del Trofeo Regione Autonoma della Sardegna per Emirates Team New Zealand, che allunga anche nel Circuito. Nella GP42 Series, trionfo per Islas Canarias Puerto Calero, nuovo leader dell’Audi MedCup Circuit.
Dopo tanti giorni di termica, nel Golfo degli Angeli entra finalmente il tanto atteso Maestrale, che soffiando ad oltre 20 nodi regala a tutto il Circuito Audi MedCup una giornata intensissima e ricca di colpi di scena. A spuntarla nella TP52 Series, con tre ottime prove, sono i neozelandesi di Emirates Team New Zealand (NZL), che gestiscono bene il vantaggio iniziale, chiudendo la giornata con 14,5 punti di vantaggio sul secondo in classifica, Matador (ARG). Proprio gli argentini, dopo la vittoria nella prima regata, erano i più accreditati a contendere il titolo ai Kiwi. Speranze sfumate nelle due prove successive, fra errori, penalità e rotture.
Neozelandesi dunque che dopo la tappa francese si aggiudicano anche il Trofeo Regione Autonoma della Sardegna, a conferma della grande superiorità rispetto al resto della flotta. Secondo posto per un Matador che non ha comunque sfigurato, vittima di un po’ di sfortuna di troppo, ma artefice ancora una volta di belle regate con qualsiasi condizione di vento. Sfortuna anche per Artemis (SWE), che nell’ultimo giorno di gare commette un po’ troppi errori chiudendo solo terzo in classifica generale, con 21,5 punti in più di Emirates Team New Zealand.
Ancora una volta benissimo Bigamist 7 (POR), quarto in classifica generale, che a Cagliari è stato capace di vincere ben tre regate su 11, confermandosi ancora una volta essere l’outsider più accreditato per infastidire i “big”. Male invece Quantum Racing (USA), autore di una serie di prove davvero non esaltanti che lo hanno relegato al settimo posto. Alti e bassi per il team italiano Audi TP52 Powered by Q8 (ITA), decimo in classifica, con Riccardo Simoneschi al timone e Francesco de Angelis alla tattica.
Nel Circuito Audi MedCup, dopo le tre tappe di Alicante, Marsiglia e Cagliari, Emirates Team New Zealand può dunque allungare in testa alla classifica, comandando con 93,5 punti. I Kiwi sono inseguiti da Matador (126 punti), Quantum Racing (146,5), Artemis (149) e Bigamist 7 (158,5). Nono posto per Audi TP52 Powered by Q8.
Nella GP42 Series Islas Canarias Puerto Calero (ESP) regina di tappa e Circuito
Splendida prestazione per Islas Canarias Puerto Calero, che grazie a una serie di quattro vittorie consecutive si aggiudica con 26 punti il Trofeo Regione Autonoma della Sardegna. Tre le lunghezze di distacco dai secondi classificati, i connazionali spagnoli di Caser-Endesa (ESP), e cinque su Airis (ITA), la barca italiana con Vasco Vascotto alla tattica. Quarta posizione invece per Roma (ITA).
Grazie alle prestazioni di Cagliari, Islas Canarias Puerto Calero si porta con 66 punti in testa anche al Circuito Audi MedCup, scavalcando così Roma (69 punti), leader prima della tappa italiana. Quarta posizione per Airis.
Questa sera, il Villaggio Audi MedCup si animerà dunque con il party di chiusura, con Dj set e Mojitos fino a tarda notte. Dopo qualche settimana di pausa, l’appuntamento con il Circuito Audi MedCup sarà per il prossimo 18 agosto, con il Trofeo di Portogallo. Per vivere insieme alla TP52 Series e alla GP42 Series, tante altre emozionanti regate.

FORZA KIWI
[Audi MedCup Press Release] Emirates Team New Zealand add the Region of Sardinia Trophy to the Marseille Trophy after a composed final day of racing in a building Mistral breeze, while Islas Canarias Puerto Calero win the GP42 Series Regatta.
Emirates Team New Zealand’s boss and mast-man Grant Dalton (NZL) had his wish today as the Mistral breeze returned to present a final crescendo as the Kiwi team sailed cleanly through three final races to secure the Region of Sardinia Trophy, their second successive regatta title after also winning last month in Marseille, France.
Dalton spoke this morning of hoping for a decent wind-strength for the final day of racing, declaring his team were just trying to ‘hang on’ after Friday’s changeable sea-breeze conditions.
Not only did the New Zealand crew ‘hang on’, they sailed with exceptional patience and composure while their two principal rivals – Matador (ARG) and Artemis (SWE) – suffered their own, largely self inflicted problems.
In the GP42 Series Islas Canarias Puerto Calero (ESP) won four of the final five races to take the Region of Sardinia Trophy, needing only to finish in the final race to be sure of their first regatta win this season.
Artemis (SWE) made infringements in both the first and second races, while Matador blotted an otherwise strong day when they tacked too close to Emirates Team New Zealand and had also to take a penalty, then spectacularly hooked the windward mark and could not release it until 100 metres down the final run.
In contrast Emirates Team New Zealand sailed with precision across their races to score a third, a first and, as a final flourish in the 22 knot Mistral, a second place which ensured they topped the final standings by 14.5 points ahead of Matador. Artemis who started the day in second slipped to third place ifor the regatta.
After arriving in Cagliari with a lead of 16 points last week, the Emirates Team New Zealand’s second regatta triumph ensures they head for Portimao for next month’s Portugal Trophy having more than doubled their lead, whilst Matador have climbed to second overall at the expense of Quantum Racing (USA). The current Audi MedCup champions best race finish came today with a second in the second contest, but they ended the regatta in seventh place.
Racing for the first time at this regatta in the NW’ly breeze, the Mistral direction, with the windward turn less than one mile from the weather shore, at the top of the U-shaped Bay of Cagliari, the course offered a rich choice of gusts and shifts for the tacticians to work their magic.
