Sir Keith Mills, presidente di Team Origin, sfidante britannico all’America’s Cup, è convinto che i tre campioni olimpici appartenenti al suo team – gli altri due sono Iain Percy e Andrew Simpson – finiranno le regate con buon anticipo e potranno prepararsi al meglio in vista delle Olimpiadi.
Lo svolgimento della Coppa America è stato ritardato più volte a causa della battaglia legale tra il defender, Alinghi, e gli statunitensi di BMW Oracle Racing. La Corte di Appello dello Stato di New York dovrebbe pronunciare la sentenza verso la fine di marzo e Mills è convinto che ad avere la meglio sarà Alinghi, e la conseguenza sarà che la 33ma edizione si svolgerà tra il 2010 e il 2011.
Mills, che si sta preparando per la traferta in Nuova Zelanda, dove seguirà il team durante le Louis Vuitton Pacific Series, ha detto a PA Sport: “Secondo noi, Alinghi ha migliori possibilità di vittoria. Questo vorrebbe dire tornare in acqua per la Coppa tra il 2010 e il 2011, a ancora tra il 2013 e il 2014. Una soluzione che non influirebbe minimamente sulle regate a cinque cerchi”.
“Abbiamo stretto un forte legame con la Royal Yachting Association, quindi non c’è ragione alcuna per la quale i nostri campioni non dovrebbero partecipare ai Giochi di Londra 2012”.
MILLS CONFIDENT OVER LEGAL DISPUTE
[Source PA Sport] The legal dispute that has embroiled sailing’s America’s Cup should be settled in time to allow Ben Ainslie to target gold again at the London 2012 Olympics, according to his team chief.
Sir Keith Mills, team principal of Team Origin, the British challenger for the America’s Cup, said the three British Olympic gold medallists on the crew – including skipper Ainslie – should have completed the race well in time to start preparing for London 2012.
The America’s Cup has been delayed on several occasions due to a fierce legal dispute between defending Swiss champions Alinghi and their US rivals Oracle.
A New York appeal court ruling is expected to issue a ruling in late March and Mills is confident Alinghi will win – allowing the race to begin in 2010 with the final in 2011.
Mills, whose team is one of 10 teams preparing to compete in the new Louis Vuitton Pacific Series event in Auckland from January 30, told PA Sport: “Our legal advice is that Alinghi have a better than even chance of victory. That would mean the America’s Cup being held in 2010/2011 and the following one in 2013/2014, so that would not impact on the Olympics at all.
“We have been a very close working relationship with the RYA so there is no reason why they should not compete at London 2012.”
Apart from Ainslie, who already has three Olympic golds and a silver, fellow gold medallists Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson are also part of the Team Origin crew.
