America’s Cup, Ernesto Bertarelli: “Vinca il migliore”

America’s Cup – Valencia – La 33a America’s Cup si fatta attendere per molto tempo, ma dopo due anni di cause intentate dal challenger americano, le regate tra due dei multiscafi più estremi del mondo, sono ormai prossime.
Ernesto Bertarelli, presidente di Alinghi, è intervenuto alla conferenza stampa odierna organizzata alla base del defender, tutto il team: “La cosa più bella è che negli ultimi 10 anni ho regatato sempre con lo stesso gruppo di persone e questo aspetto è stato molto importante per tutta la nostra l’esperienza. Tre campagne con sempre con lo stesso gruppo, rendono ogni giorno più interessante e più appagante. Il fatto che le fondamenta del team siano sempre state lo stesse sin dagli inizi, rende questa America’s Cup particolarmente gratificante e non vorrei essere qui senza avere al mio fianco tutti gli altri componenti di Alinghi. Sarò al timone, ma condividerò questa esperienza con Loïck Peyron. Nessuno di noi sarebbe capace di svolgere il proprio ruolo senza la collaborazione degli altri che sono a bordo. Il team è pronto”.
Alinghi ha progettato e costruito Alinghi 5, un catamarano di 90 piedi di lunghezza al galleggiamento che arrivano a 110 con lunghezza fuori tutto, con un albero alto come un palazzo di 17 piani che poggia su una base grande come una palla da tennis.
Per costruire la barca sono state necessarie 100,000 ore di manodopera. Alinghi 5 è il frutto della rinomata tradizione Svizzera nella realizzazione di multiscafi da regata.
“Progettare e costruire Alinghi 5 è stato molto impegnativo. I nostri progettisti e tutti coloro che hanno partecipato alla costruzione hanno fatto un lavoro straordinario per metterci la barca a disposizione in un tempo così breve. Il nostro avversario è formidabile. BMW Oracle Racing ha un ottimo velista come James Spithill e la loro barca rende merito alle capacità del loro team progettuale. Parlo a nome di tutto l’equipaggio quando dico che non vediamo l’ora di regatare e di riportare lo sport di nuovo in acqua” ha dichiarato Brad Butterworth, skipper del team e quattro volte vincitore dell’America’s Cup.
Le regate sono in programma a partire da lunedì. Il segnale di avviso sarà dato alle 10.00 condizioni meteo permettendo. Gli occhi di tutto il team saranno puntati su quello che succederà in mare, come ha sottolineato Grant Simmer, coordinatore dei progettisti del team: “Noi progettisti siamo particolarmente curiosi di scoprire cosa succederà lunedì. Abbiamo cominciato a lavorare su Alinghi 5 quasi due anni fa e sarà particolarmente emozionante vedere finalmente la barca sulla linea di partenza. Grazie a tutti coloro che ci hanno permesso di arrivare fino qui”.

AMERICA’S CUP, ERNESTO BERTARELLI: “MAY THE BEST TEAM WIN ON THE WATER”
[Alinghi Press Release] The 33rd America’s Cup has been a long time coming, but after two years of litigation from the American challenger the Match between two of the world’s most extreme multihulls is just days away.
Ernesto Bertarelli, team president, speaking at the press conference on Friday evening praised his team: “The nice thing is that for the last 10 years I’ve been sailing with the same people and that has been very important to the whole experience. Three campaigns with almost the same group make each day more interesting and more rewarding. The fact that the heart of the team has been the same since the very, very beginning makes this America’s Cup campaign rewarding and I wouldn’t be here today without all the members of the Alinghi team. I’ll be helming but I’ll be sharing the helm with Loïck Peyron. Neither of us would be able to do our job without the other guys onboard and the team ashore.”
Alinghi has designed and built Alinghi 5, a 90ft catamaran on load waterline that spans 110ft overall, with a mast that towers more than 17-storeys above the sailors and settles on a foundation the size of a tennis ball. The boat has taken approximately 100,000-man-hours to build and is deeply rooted in the multihull heritage that Switzerland is so well-known for.
“Designing and building Alinghi 5 has been a huge ask in such a short timeframe, and the guys on the design and shore team have done an extraordinary job in giving us this boat. Our opponent is formidable, BMW Oracle Racing has a very good sailor in James Spithill and their boat is a credit to their design team. I speak for all of us on the sailing team when I say we are looking forward to racing and getting the sport back on the water where it belongs,” said team skipper and four-time America’s Cup winner, Brad Butterworth.
Racing is scheduled to start on Monday, with a first race warning signal at 10:00 – weather permitting – and the team will be watching, as Grant Simmer, design team coordinator describes: “From the design team’s point of view, we are looking forward to Monday. It has been almost two years since we started work on Alinghi 5 and it will be fantastic to finally see her on the starting line. Thanks go to each and every team member”.
