America’s Cup, che fine ha fatto l’Australia?

America’s Cup – Sydney – In una recente intervista alla AAP, Hugh Treharne, membro dell’equipaggio di Australia II durante l’indimenticabile trionfo del 1983, guarda con tristezza alla mancanza di un team aussie dall’America’s Cup per la terza edizione consecutiva (l’ultima apparizione risale al 2000). Alcuni giorni fa, infatti, Alinghi ha reso nota la lista dei team regolarmente iscritti alla Coppa del 2010 e tra essi non c’è nessun sindcato australiano.

Treharne, che presto prenderà parte alla sua ventinovesima Sydney-Hobart, sottolinea quanto sia difficile mettere insieme una sfida che rappresenti davvero i colori di una sola nazione: “Tutti i team sono composti da velisti provenienti da paesi diversi. Non è più uno sport per nazioni, è come una gara di Formula 1: ai consorzi basta avere il meglio in fatto di cervelli, materiali e designer e se li vanno a prendere dovunque sono”.

“Pur sapendo che i costi per partecipare all’evento sono pressoché incredibili, resto stupito da come la Nuova Zelanda riesca ogni volta a essere presente mentre l’Australia no. Comunque sia, per tutti i velisti che vogliono tentare l’avventura in Coppa America le opportunità non mancano, è solo che bisogna muoversi e allontanarsi da casa”.

America’s Cup – Sydney – In a recent interview to AAP, Hugh Treharne, part of the Australia II crew during their unforgettable 1983 America’s Cup triumph, is sad Australia won’t be contesting the famous competition for a three straight time. A list of 18 teams from 12 nations were last week registered as challengers for the 2010 Cup. Australia is not among the competitors.

Treharne, who will soon contest his 29th Sydney to Hobart, lamented it was increasingly difficult to pull together a truly national team for the Cup. “All the teams are made up of international sailors from every country. It’s not a national sport any more,” he said. “It’s like a Formula One racing car – they just get the brains and the power and the design and the expertise from wherever they can get it.

“He acknowledged the cost of contesting the event was “quite incredible. I’m always quite amazed how New Zealand can manage to do it and Australia can’t,” Treharne said. “Anyway, it doesn’t matter, there’s plenty of opportunities for sailors who want to get involved in America’s Cup sailing, it’s just that it’s not local any more.”

Australia last fielded a challenger in 2000 and wasn’t represented in the 2003, 2007 and… 2010 (?) events. Treharne will sail south to Hobart from Boxing Day aboard the 50-year-old Sanyo Maris, skippered by Ian Kiernan.
