Baird e Detrey parlano dell’attività di Alinghi sui Decision 35

[singlepic=2414,204,300,,left]Trofeo Julius Baer – Ginevra – Alinghi prepara l’esordio stagionale a bordo dei Decision 35 sul Lago di Ginevra, dove tra pochi giorni avrà inizio il Challenge Julius Baer.

A spiegare il tipo di attività che in questi giorni sta impegnando il team di Ernesto Bertarelli, che a disposizione ha due catamarani, sono Ed Baird, timoniere di SUI-6, e Yves Detrey, prodiere e comandante di SUI-1.

D: Dove siete e cosa state facendo?
EB: Siamo sul lago di Ginevra, in una città chiamata Nyon, in Svizzera, e ci stiamo perparando per veleggiare sui Decision 35, sui quali regateremo per tutta l’estate. Questa è la prima volta che navighiamo insieme su queste barche con lo scopo di provare, sperimentare e imparare come funzionano in vista degli impegni del prossimo week end.
Questa sarà una stagione differente dalle altre. Il team Alinghi ha due barche a disposizione. Ernesto ha iniziato a navigare in questa classe sin dal momento della sua presentazione. Questa è la nostra prima volta. C’era una barca che non sarebbe stata utilizzata e siamo riusciti a charterizzarla, anche se solo un per una parte della stagione, perchè non potremo prendere parte a tutte le regate, ma gareggiare contro un altro equipaggio del nostre team sarà molto interessante.

D: Parlami degli altri avversari: quanti avversari ci saranno e dove si regaterà?
EB: A quanto ho capito dovrebbero essserci 12 barche quest’anno, ed è una cosa fantastica. Lo scorso anno erano 10 e questo vuol dire che ce ne sono un paio di nuove. Ci sono diversi grandi team che sono tra i protagonisti sin dall’inizio ma anche i nuovi promotteno di essere molto competitivi. Sarà l’occasione per imparare a navigare su questo tipo di barche, che poi è ciò che vogliamo in vista della prossima Coppa, cioè migliorarci a bordo dei multiscafi.

Q: Lo scorso anno ti abbiamo visto vincere l’I-Share Cup sugli Xtreme 40. Che differenza c’è tra gli Xtreme 40 e i Decision 35?
EB: Sotto certi punti di vsita si assomigliano. Non sono molto differenti nelle dimensioni e hanno entrambe il gennaker, la randa e il fiocco, ma il Decision 35 ha attrezzatura molto più sofisticata. Ci sono più cose che puoi mettere a punto sulla barca per controllare la forma delle vele e il suo comportamento in acqua. Inoltre hai un range di vele più ampio.
C’è più scelta per adattare la barca al variare delle condizioni meteo. In complesso è una barca più potente e non sarà facile utilizzarla al meglio. Certo, avere utilizzato l’Xtreme 40 lo scorso anno è un buon punto di partenza, ma questo sarà sicuramente un passo difficile.

D: Chi regaterà con te e chi sarà in vostro supporto?
EB: Siamo fortunati a poter contare su alcuni dei ragazzi che hanno regatato con noi già dalla scorsa estate, ma cercheremo di preparare un nuovo gruppo trasmettendo ciò che già sappiamo in modo da poter crescere insieme. Warwick Fleury, Brad Butterworth e Murray Jones regateranno con noi nei prossimi mesi. Ovviamente Piet van Nieuwenhuijzen e Lorenzo Mazza sono qui ed erano con me già l’anno passato. A supportare la nostra attività c’è un gruppo composto da Juan Vila, Peter Evans e un buon numero di altri ragazzi che si alterneranno per capire e imparare qualcosa di più su queste barche.

CHELLENGE JULIUS BAER, ALINGHI TO WORK ON DECISION 35
Trofeo Julius Baer – Geneva – Alinghi prepares itself for the season debut aboard Decision 35 on Lake Geneva, where in a few days will start the Challenge Julius Baer.

Ed Baird, helmsman of SUI-6, and Yves Detrey, bowman and boat on SUI-1 explain the type of activities done in this days by the team of Ernesto Bertarelli on the two multihulls SUI-1 and SUI-6.

Q: Where are you and what are you doing here today?
EB: We are on Lake Geneva, in a town called Nyon, in Switzerland, and we are going out sailing on the D35s that we are going to sail all summer. This is our first time together as a group on the boat to try and experiment and learn a little bit about how they work and trying to get ready for the races this weekend.
This season is a little different from others. There are two boats at the Alinghi team. Ernesto started this class way back and he’s been racing on these boats since they were originally conceived. This is the first time for us. There was a boat that wasn’t been used and we were able to charter it for the season, for part of the season actually, because we can’t do all of the races, but we’ll have another team within our team to race against and train against and that will be interesting.

Q: Tell me about the rest of the fleet, how many boats and where is the racing going to be held?
EB: My understanding is that there are going to be 12 boats this year, which is fantastic. Last year it was 10 and now a couple more. There are several great teams that have been here since the beginning but there are some new ones that are going to be tough as well, so we know we have our work cut out for us to try to catch up and learn about sailing these boats, but that’s the position we are in for this next Cup, it’s to try to get better at multihulls.

Q: Last season we saw you successful in the I-Shares, on Xtreme 40s. what’s the difference between the X40s and the D35s?
EB: In some ways the X40s and the D35s are similar. They are not that different in length and they have gennakers, and mains and jibs but the D35s have a lot more sophisticated equipment. There is a lot more that you can manipulate on the boat to control the way the sails are, and the way the boat is able to move through the water and there are more sails.
We have more to select from for the different wind speeds, and it’s amore powerful boat overall, so it’s going to be a real handful to try to get used to. It’s good that we had the opportunity last year to sail the X40s, but this is definitely a more difficult step.

Q: Who is sailing with you and who’s backing you up?
EB: We are pretty lucky to have some of the same guys we raced together with last summer, but we are also trying to teach a new gang what they need to learn and learn together: Warwick
Fleury, Brad Butterworth, Murray Jones, will all be sailing with our team this summer. Of course Piet van Nieuwenhuijzen and Lorenzo Mazza are here and they were with me all last year. We have a different group of people supporting us: Juan Vila, Peter Evans, who was with us last year, and quite a number of different folks that are coming looking at the different things that these boats do to try to learn from it.

YD: Cette semaine on est en pleine préparation pour le Grand Prix Corum qui a lieu vendredi prochain. Donc là on est en préparation finale ici à Nyon dans le petit lac pour être fin prêt pour la première régate de la saison du challenge Julius Baer qui a lieu ce weekend.

Q: What is different about this year event from the Alinghi perspective?
YD: Cette année ce qui est très différent, c’est qu’il y a 3 bateaux professionnel en plus dont une deuxième équipe Alinghi donc le niveau a sensiblement augmenté depuis l’année passée. Cette année il y a 2 bateaux Alinghi SUI-1 SUI-6. Alors SUI-1 est Alinghi que l’on connaît déjà c’est l’équipe qui est là depuis le début du Challenge Julius Baer, c’est la même équipe qui a gagné l’année passée avec Ernesto Bertarelli, Pierre-Yves Jorand, Tanguy Cariou, Nils Frei, Coraline Jonet et moi-même. Et l’autre bateau, le bateau Alinghi qui est l’ancien Cadence qui a été repris pour cette saison, et sur ce bateau il y aura l’équipe qui a régaté à l’Xtreme 40 l’année passée et qui a gagné le championnat. Donc il y aura Ed Baird, Lorenzo Mazza, Pieter van Nieuwenhuijzen et Warwick Fleury.

Q: Where will this event be the first Challenge Julius Baer, what can the spectators expect if they come down to the shore side, and where should they be?
YD: Le premier événement de cette année se déroulera à Genève à la Société Nautique, très proche des quais en tout cas dans la mesure du possible donc idéal pour le public. Et cette année il y a 12 bateaux très compétitifs avec de plus en plus de professionnels dans la série aussi sur les autres bateaux, donc cela va être un bel événement en espérant qu’il y a un petit peu d’air.

Q: And just give me a little tip who should I put the money on, who is favorite for this season?
YD: Les favoris pour la saison est en général ceux qui ont gagné la saison précédente. Donc j’aurai tendance à dire nous, mais cela va être très très dur pour nous cette saison. Donc avec l’équipe de Ed Baird et les deux nouveaux équipages aussi, avec Veltigroup et Banque Populaire et tous les autres équipes qui se sont beaucoup mieux préparés à mon sens pour cette saison, je pense que cela va être très très dur.
